| Weekly "anything goes" thread! Posted: 17 Jul 2020 05:40 AM PDT Here's your chance to talk about whatever! Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread. Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed. [link] [comments] | ||

| How do you learn how to make UI components and other stuff like that for you app? Posted: 17 Jul 2020 08:19 AM PDT Learning coding (Kotlin specifically) was easy I think I know enough to call myself upper intermediate in Kotlin, but now when i try to apply that knowledge to improve an app i have, it feels so overwhelming. There are so many methods in the library android apps use, all of these long names for methods and tags, how do you learn what these even mean? If I look at a tutorial all they do is to tell you what to do not what every component does or how to do something similar but not exactly the same. There are like hundreds of XML tags that i dont know the job of. I dont know if I am explaining this well but it feels like an infinite amount of information that i need to know first. What do you do customize the ripple effect? how do I change or customize my action bar? I am not even sure if I understand what an action bar is well. I wonder if I should take some udemy class or something. What are so many attributes supposed to do? I want to make an IME (a keyboard), how do you even do that? What are all these things it tells me to extend from? Extend what? I dont have a class to extend. I feel so overwhelmed and I need to know how to learn all of these things. I really love programming but I dont have enough resources i guess to learn how to make apps. [link] [comments] | ||

| Articles or topics for a deep understanding of Android to become a better senior Posted: 16 Jul 2020 06:19 PM PDT Hi guys! I work with android for 5 years and it is the only technology that I ever worked on profissionally. In my career, I always focused on software engineering and architecture and I never really liked the UI part of the job. Because of that, even that I know how to write layouts and have a understanding of how android works, sometimes I feel like I'm missing some deep knowledge on the Android framework, specially on the UI, but not limited to it. I'd like to some advice for what you guys think that I should study and some recommendations for topics / articles. Looking at the internet, It's really hard to find articles for more advanced stuff, I feel like we have several tutorials teaching how to do some specific thing, than articles explain how things work or other cool things that it's important to know and we don't really focus on a daily basis when our job is just to delivery features (for example: gradle, dependencies resolution, code generation, or other cool things that I don't know and I can't quote). Thank you all! [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 16 Jul 2020 02:23 PM PDT I come from programming Java, where Oracle's documentation is very detailed and explains everything you need to know. I am experiencing very frustrating culture shock trying to program GUI in android. There are a few pages in the developers guide and a few classes that have a half baked descriptions of the class and almost no information on the methods. Google is a giant. Google as a company is worth just under $280 billion. Oracle net worth as of July 15, 2020 is $173.75B. Is this issue with documentation due to bad management on Google's part? Do they have too many eggs in the basket? Are they lazy? Deem it unworthy? [link] [comments] | ||
| Opening Biometric Registration In App? Posted: 16 Jul 2020 09:54 PM PDT Not sure if I can ask questions like this on the subreddit, but I'm trying to make an app that lets you register biometrics by pressing a button (which in reality would take you to the settings to do it). I know you're can have an app open settings, but is it possible to have an app open the security section to register a biometric quickly? [link] [comments] | ||

| Sensitive permission exception experience/advice - read call logs? Posted: 16 Jul 2020 03:27 PM PDT I've been trying to submit our phone spam blocking app to Google Play for the past month. The READ_CALL_LOG is the only sensitive permissions I have, and a Permissions Declaration form was submitted. According to the exceptions, a spam-blocker should be able to use READ_CALL_LOG This recent rejection came from a brand new package that has just the bare minimum Permissions I need to service API 28+. Still got rejected This video was submitted first followed by this video. Looks like I need to say the magic word to get through their filters. Does anyone know what this magic word might be? How did you get your app through the filters with a sensitive permission & a legit need for it? I'm on my 2nd support ticket.... [link] [comments] | ||
| Worth continuing Java Android or Kotlin Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:54 AM PDT So I've been doing some Android intro's for the past few months and it's been going okay. The Udacity course which I've been using was made in 2015(Obviously even though it's been 5 years, the courses still "work" but they're slightly broken with 2020 Android studio) and they primarily used Java instead of Kotlin at the time. Today I saw that the Android dev site just added a new course for Android basics with Kotlin. I'm currently learning the OOP part for Java in the Udacity course and not sure whether I should switch to this course since I've heard Kotlin is much faster and just better than Java. Is it worth switch over at this point or should I just continue the Udacity course ? [link] [comments] | ||
| Any good place to start making my own vpn app Posted: 16 Jul 2020 09:53 AM PDT Hey guys any sample app which I can know that can help me develop a VPN application I've gone through the vpn guide But the sample app suggested doesn't use gradle so it's hard to build. Any other source to get started on building my own vpn app something like this ios but for android. Thanks [link] [comments] | ||
| notifyDataSetChanged or DiffUtils scrolls to top. Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:20 AM PDT I have a parent vertical recyclerview which has horizontal child recyclerviews on which I have items with buttons everytime user perfoms any action through button I do notifyDataSetChanged and update the data of which it is scrolling to the top position of it. How to avoid that and be in the same position where the action was performed? I understand that notifyItemChanged can be a solution but I have no scope of capturing the position of the item in my case. [link] [comments] | ||
| Tutorial for Android Application Security Posted: 16 Jul 2020 10:37 AM PDT Hey Fellow Android Developers, Greetings of the day. I want to improve my android application security. I am using all the basic stuff like code obfuscation, SSL pinning, root detection(using root beer), etc in my app. I was blown away when Elliot Alderson has literally destroyed Arogya Setu app by the Indian Govt. So I want to know how I can protect my app better from hackers. Can some of you suggest a good tutorial for this(Paid ones will be fine) Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
