    Android Fragment Lifecycle in 137 Seconds

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 05:55 AM PDT

    Android Fragment Lifecycle is complicated, and official documentation is even worse. But don't panic, there is an easy way to understand and use it correctly. It'll take you 137 seconds, start your timer.

    Why is android pushing Flutter(Dart) and Kotlin at the same time?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 02:19 PM PDT

    I'm aware that google is promoting the use of Android Studio and Kotlin for android app development. But at the same time they promote Flutter and Dart for app development.

    Since apps based on flutter can run both on android and ios, it seems like a better choice. Why is google pushing both?

    Sorry I'm a noob.

    Trying to write app list to txt file.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 08:00 AM PDT

    I am trying to write the app label list to a txt file. I have attempted to do it however I have only been managing to get one app written. I dont think there is anything wrong with my writing method as it has got a myOutWriter.append(data); which means it should append instead of overwriting.

    Here's what i have attempted:

    In an RAdapter Class...

    List<ResolveInfo> allApps = pm.queryIntentActivities(i, 0);
    for(ResolveInfo ri:allApps) {
    AppInfo app = new AppInfo();
    app.label = ri.loadLabel(pm);
    app.packageName = ri.activityInfo.packageName;
    app.icon = ri.activityInfo.loadIcon(pm);
    appsList.add(app);
    writeToFile(app.label.toString());
    }

    The code works well when populationg an app drawer however it does not write more than 1 app to the txt file.

    Please let me know where i am going wrong.

    Integrating Account Hold without a backend server

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 07:56 AM PDT

    Starting on November 1, 2020 it will be mandatory for Android apps with subscriptions to implement Account Hold.

    https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2020/06/new-features-to-acquire-and-retain-subscribers.html

    Using queryPurchases() seems to be enough to check if the user should be given access to premium features during the hold, but Google also wants you to clearly notify the user about the account hold and provide a button/link to the Google Play subscription settings. Otherwise you can expect some bad reviews when the premium features suddenly just disappear without any explanation.

    To do this you need to listen for SUBSCRIPTION_ON_HOLD on your backend server.

    Has anyone figured a way to notify the user about the hold, without having a backend server? Perhaps by getting this information from the BillingClient or any API that can be accessed from within the app?

    Is kotlin treated as pure native language in android or does it get translated or converted to java?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 11:06 AM PDT

    Hi, I am very new in android programming. Seeing some posts in this subs about kotlin intrigue me to try to move away from Android Java to kotlin since android still stuck with the old java 8.

    Like the question in the title, is kotlin treated as native or will it be translated to java during compile or running? Does android has two VMs ( Java and Kotlin)? Will there be performance impact to move to kotlin? Like speed and file size?

    I am using features such as webview from javafx that is available only in Java 8 for android. Now java has gone to Java 14, but android atill stuck with java 8. This stresses me out since we also integrate some APIs that uses later version of Java.

    Any infos are very appreciated.

    Android Modularization in Practice

    Android Modularization in Practice

    Hello everyone,

    Recently I've been working on an open-source project called Tedu that is a todo app, and it lets user sync data on his/her cloud provider(Currently only supports WebDAV); And besides that, I've tried to design it as minimal as possible.

    https://preview.redd.it/knnw2fuoslb51.png?width=3240&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d951ec331e960f65fa04ff5dbf1de295d3bb013

    My main goal for developing this app was to get to know the modularization challenges that one could face. Because at my current job, we decided to migrate our code-base to a modular structure, and I had to do the R&D. I've done some researches around this subject and found out that some big companies such as Spotify, SoundCloud, and Yelp migrated their code-base to a modular structure and shared their experiences going through this dark path:

    All of them describe the same concept, but with some minor differences. For example, Spotify has one additional layer in its module hierarchy called "Common" which resides in between feature and library modules, and I think it's a really good idea to have this additional layer because it can help to avoid circular dependencies between library modules. And basically, what I've done, was to pick the best ideas from these blog posts and conference talks and try to implement them. Since experimenting with new things in an already built project is hard, I've developed this project to help me with this.

    You can access its source code from here:

    https://github.com/PHELAT/Tedu

    And you can download it from here:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phelat.tedu&utm_source=reddit

    I've tried to describe the architecture and how things are implemented in the project's readme file.

    Properly cleaning up memory after heavy OpenCV Operations

    Hello everyone,

    I am working on an android project that uses OpenCV for some face image related operations. Before I make a call to the OpenCV part of the application, my app's memory usage is like ~50MB, during the call it can spike up to 600MB, but the issue I am experiencing, is that after the operation is complete the app's memory usage averages at around 150MB adding 100MB to the pre-call memory usage, if the operation is repeated, 100MB will keep being added till there is an OOM, I have tried many ways to perform garbage collection in my code I call System.gc() after every operation.
    I used the profiler and I can see that most of the memory was allocated from native code, does any how have any suggestions on how to properly clean up natively allocated memory. Please find a screenshot of my heap dump attached.

    Any help at all would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

    Which one should I choose for android mobile development: Kotlin or Flutter?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 06:35 AM PDT

    I'm completely new to mobile development. I've done some research. so Flutter is very immature despite being very easy to work with. But I assume from my research even if Kotlin is Native, it has also issues like having very few libraries, etc. I have Java experience. I'm working as a Junior Spring Boot developer. Which one should I choose and why? thanks in advance

    Creating an for automated web browsing (logging into facebook, google search, etc.) in python

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 06:31 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

    I'm trying to get into app development, with a background in python. I know Java is what's primarily used, but there are packages for python (e.g. Kivy), that enable you to design GUIs and various functions. However, I have yet to find something for automated web browsing (like selenium). I know you can use WebView for this, but that is in Java/Kotlin. I'm looking for something within Python.

    The app would take a user input, and then input that information into an online site (e.g. input logic information in the app, and it opens up a chrome browser, goes to facebook.com, enters the inputs, click login button to log you in. Or input something in the app, chrome opens up and goes to google.com , and searches the entry). I've been able to successfully design a GUI using Kivy, and compile it into apk using buildozer, and I've tested this apk both on my own phone, and the emulator. However, I have yet to find any tools that I can write in python, for automated web browsing.

    Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:29 PM PDT

    Like there is an "expense manager" app in play store with PC editing feature, where I can edit my income and expense on PC while my phone and PC are on the same wifi network. I have recently started developing android apps. But I don't know how can I do this. It will be very helpful if some of you guys can point me in the right direction.

    Google Map SDK in my app - won't load tiles

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 02:04 PM PDT

    I'm using the Google Map SDK in my Android app and it works fine except I just noticed that areas of the map and zoom levels that haven't been cached by the Google Maps app do not show up, meaning I get stuck with low resolution map tiles if I get any at all.

    Any idea what I might have missed?

    Unable to create issue for Android Emulator in Google Issue Tracker.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:46 AM PDT

    I'm trying to report an issue with the Android Emulator but am getting the following message:

    You do not have permission to create issues in this component.

    What gives? I've tried this manually via a browser and via the UI in the emulator itself.
