HD YouTube streaming is back for India! (Kinda)

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 11:43 PM PDT

Today I noticed, I had 1080p steaming available on my android. After running a few tests with other people, I've realised that you can get HQ streaming on YouTube in India as long as the following criterias are met: - You must be a YouTube Premium member - You must be connected to a Wi-Fi Network

I think they isolated a small subset of the population of India that can access HQ videos to reduce load on their servers.

Is there anything stopping Google from creating an API that app developers can use to access a camera image, and forcing device makers to program that functionality into their devices in future Android releases?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 08:25 PM PDT

Android devices have long had the issue of not taking great pictures in apps like Instagram and Snapchat (with the exception of Pixel devices with with Pixel Visual Core/Pixel Neural Core), because those apps only essentially screenshot the viewfinder as a one-size-fits-all solution to take pictures on such a wide variety of different devices, each with different methods of proper camera access and image processing.

Could Google create an API like this:

    • App developers could implement it in one way on their end to access camera data and image processing properly

    • Android device makers could implement it differently on their own devices, to allow the same API to access the right information on their particular devices

    • Android device makers are required to implement this properly in future Android updates of theirs

If they could, wouldn't that essentially mean this common issue could at least be mostly eliminated in a matter of years?

Phandroid pushing bogus "Top 10" lists featuring app clones.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 09:04 AM PDT

I've had Phandroid aka "Android Phone Fans" in my RSS reader for more years than I can remember but I'm not putting up with their recent turn towards shilling app clones. Ethical questions surrounding the topics aside, their "10 best free apps to track a cheating spouse for Android" post is pushing 6 different apps made by the same company as their top 6 choices, and they published a second post today ("How to read someone else's text messages online for free) that, shocker, also promotes the same apps. They published a similar article a week or two ago about "10 best apps to track teens" and pushed the same set of 6 apps.

The web sites for these apps are clearly made by the same people and have identical pricing pages/costs/etc.

Just wanted to post a heads up in case anyone is still viewing their content, and apologies in advance if they turned to the dark side before now and I somehow missed it.
