    Sony Australia OLED TV Fault/Service

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:06 AM PDT

I purchased a Sony A8F OLED for ~$4000, the most expensive TV purchase I have made. I paid a premium because I expected a premium product and for the most part it's fantastic.

Unfortunately while watching movies and console games I noticed a fault on the screen, a large vertical band or smudge on the left side of the screen. It isn't always visible in bright or complex scenes, but it is visible with uniform blue, grey or green images such as a night sky or grassy football field and I find it extremely distracting.

After allowing about a year for the screen to achieve a uniform level I contacted Sony Technical Support with pictures as shown here:

    https://i.imgur.com/h4GZfUK.jpg

    https://i.imgur.com/xHdA1Qa.jpg

I circled the fault as the initial response from Sony Technical Support included the comment "I can't see the vertical line that you reported", I believe this was a lie intended to discourage me from continuing my Product Enquiry, however I continued the process.

After ~10 emails and further evidence provided in the form of more photos and videos, Sony Technical Support attempted to end the Product Enquiry with "After careful observation, our level 2 support agrees that the black band that you were referring to is not a defect. Please understand that Organic EL displays (OLED) are built with precision, but differences in brightness may cause slight lines or bands to appear on the screen. These bands become very visible in dark backgrounds. These TVs meet the suitable standards and the band is not a malfunction".

There was no elaboration or explanation of the 'suitable standards'.

I continued to pursue the Product Enquiry and eventually a Tech Support Rep visited to inspect the TV. After briefly viewing test and demo screens, the Rep determined that at normal viewing distances the fault is not visible.

I agree that during bright and colourful test and demo screens the fault is not visible, I didn't purchase the TV to watch test and demo screens, I purchased the TV to watch movies and console games, many of which have blue, grey or green images which render the fault absolutely visible at my normal viewing distance of ~3.2 metres.

The Tech Rep provided a written report when requested, which again provided no technical data regarding the fault, or elaboration or explanation of the 'suitable standards'.

The short version of this cautionary tale is: I spent $4000 on a premium TV expecting premium quality and service. I find the a TV which can't accurately reproduce an image of blue, grey or green to be unfit for its intended purpose.

Sony has replied to my Product Enquiry with various tactics ranging from obtuse/false (claiming not to see the fault), to delay/discourage (~10 emails to even schedule and inspection), to an appeal to authority (subjectively claiming there is no fault without any technical justification).

I am continuing the process now with Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Do any devices exist which can display multiple video outputs?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:41 AM PDT

Similar to how a Windows PC behaves when extending to multiple screens, is there such thing as an Android TV box with multiple video-outs? (As in multiple screens, not a single screen being mirrored to multiple displays).

I know it sounds a bit strange but I basically want multiple screens to be used with an app I'm developing, for personal use, on a single device (since I don't want to purchase multiple boxes or multiple Amazon Firesticks to load the app onto).

Might sound a bit far-fetched since I'm not even sure if the OS even supports it. I even had the idea of, even if the OS doesn't support the feature, maybe there's a device out there which works around the issue by opening multiple instances of the OS (as in like virtualization).

Any information is appreciated, even if it's of aid indirectly (y)

We made an Android TV app to bring instant photography to your device

We made an Android TV app to bring instant photography to your device

Hi there TV peeps. I'm with a small company of software devs (there are two of us) from Augusta GA. We typically make smartphone apps but we wanted to expand our skillset and decided to make an app for Android TVs. I'm sharing this here since all ya'll likely have the hardware to give this a try.

Let me be super upfront here, this is a free app, no ads or anything. We are trying to get better with this platform and really looking to work with users and get feedback to know what is working and what could be done better, what features to add etc. This is not a sales pitch.

Okay, so hopefully that clear that. The app is called ZenPic. It is a photography app that displays colorful scenic images that transition over time. At the moment that is all it does. Really simple.

I have spent quite a bit of time researching what is already out there and most of the Android TV photography apps I have seen are for displaying personal photos. So if you are wondering what is the point of this app, we think it would be good for places of professional setting where you wouldn't want random personal photos accidentally popping in the display... to each their own :)

Since we took this approach it also adds other things, such as the fact that it comes out of the box packed with photos, so you do not have to BYOP. In fact we have over 1000 curated photos so far that we have picked ourselves. This is the style of photography I am talking about:

    ![img](s2q3wws4xr251 " ")

Here is a link to the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mf.mobilefirst.zenpic. It has only been out about a day so not much activity but again I would really appreciate it if some of you would be willing to try it and just share your thoughts on it. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns - everything goes, thanks!

    Awesome Content App

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:44 AM PDT

Firstly I am not trying to advertise, just letting the Android TV community know of an app that I have loved on Roku is now available for Android.

It's called Reelgood. You select what services you have and it curates everything into one place. From the app you can load the searched or chosen title directly into that streaming channel. Again, I'm not trying to advertise, just sharing my excitement for what was a great Roku app now available for Android.

    Advantages over a Chromecast Ultra?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:26 PM PDT

What is the point of getting an Android TV when my Chromecast does (what I believe to be) all the same things? Not having a remote doesn't really matter imo since your phone is literally the remote. Am I missing something? I just want to understand so I can have an excuse to get the upcoming Nest TV when it comes out lol

Xiaomi Mi Box S wifi problems

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:51 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So I purchased a Mi Box S today, and in order to make it "see" my wifi network, I have to restart my router first... It can see every other network around me, (e.g. my neighbour's) except mine.

I have to do this every time after unplugging the mi box from the power outlet. My router is a Nokia G-240W-F. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this strange issue?

    Thanks in advance!

Android TV / Android TV box remotes need more buttons!

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:11 PM PDT

These new slick remotes have reduced functionality a lot at the cost of minimalism. My mi box s remote and most other Android TV remotes as well lack so many buttons.

No mute. No separate play/pause, as some apps require you to press the centre button twice.

They should also provide rewind and fast forward buttons. Prime, Netflix, YouTube etc all have different rewind/fast forward interfaces. It is such a pain to remember all of them.

And I know that Netflix and prime video have deals with box manufacturers to have shortcuts buttons on the remotes, but having those classic red-green-blue-yellow buttons as programmable shortcuts would be cool.
