Sunday Rant/Rage (Jun 21 2020) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 04:12 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

YouTube Music - gotta love those suggested playlists

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 06:20 AM PDT

Just migrated my library from Play Music to YouTube Music. There's things I like about YTM, there's things I don't.

I have to say though, the suggested playlists are fantastic. It knows many great playlists to suggest to me, they're pretty on point to my tastes, and the playlist itself is full of absolute classics that fit well to the description of the playlist, and again, my tastes.

So often I want to listen to some music, but am indecisive as to what, these playlists come along and give me a great mix.

For all the shit YTM gets, I just wanted to highlight these playlists if you've not seen/tried them, and give some credit where it's due.

Taskernet Collector - Search for and import Tasker creations

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:11 PM PDT

    TL;DR

    Hey everyone,

I'm sure many of you here are familiar with Tasker, an automation app with a ton of capability to automate a large number of tasks on your phone. I've been a user of Tasker for almost 8 years now, and it's been a core part of my Android experience. I've been able to use Tasker to eliminate the need for many small utility apps.

But while powerful, Tasker has a very steep learning curve. It can be challenging to learn the ins and outs of the app to automate what you need. There are a lot of resources to learn (checkout the sidebar at /r/tasker for a few good ones), but it's always easier to have something to start with and build upon.

The community over at /r/tasker is always super helpful to people trying to learn the app, and are always sharing their creations as well. However there was no central repository for users to easily search for these projects, until now with the launch of my new site, Taskernet Collector at:

    https://pghant.github.io/taskernet-collector

I'm scraping links to Taskernet (a first party sharing system), that users on /r/tasker have posted and putting them into an easily searchable index. The site allows you to see details for matching Tasker creations and then go to Taskernet to import them. See the announcement post on /r/tasker for more details.

The site is also totally open source. If you find any issues with it feel free to open an issue at https://github.com/pghant/taskernet-collector or send me a PM.

Hope some people find this helpful!

Why don't phones have a cleaning mode?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:04 AM PDT

A simple cleaning mode to disable everything but the power button when you want to clean your phone and not have everything going off.

Might be wrong but this seems the easiest thing to implement. The only thing you can do now is to turn off your device for this.

When do you feel memory management became good?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2020 03:30 AM PDT

I have three phones a HTC one M8 with Marshmallow 6.0, HTC 10 with Nougat 7.0 and my current phone LG V30 that has Oreo 8.0.

I say this because I haven't updated many of the apps on any of the phones, apart from the OS upgrades on the HTC phones they are essentially running the same version apps from the day I bought it (basically I switch off autoupdate in Google Play).

The HTC phones with 6.0 and 7.0 get sluggish when ever there is a lot of apps running whilst the LG V30 with 8.0 runs smoothly no matter how many apps I have open. It appears to intelligently kill apps without affecting performance. I believe all the phones have 4GB of ram as well. Of course they have different chipsets but my feeling is that as android os has matured it has become better at managing memory.
