Do you think we will see 8” (non-folding) phones?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:20 AM PDT

A year or two ago anything larger than 7 inches sounded improbable, now Note 20 and others are approaching or passing the 7" mark... How long until we start seeing 8" flagships?

Long Term S20 Ultra (Snapdragon) Impressions: Great Phone, still a finicky camera.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 12:25 PM PDT

edit: oh god its only been a month? Time does flow differently these days :)

Was gonna do a write up on this earlier but alas things have been hectic! So originally I wasn't s.planning on buying the s20 line because of the pricing was getting a bit ridiculous even for me that loves to switch up phones, but there was a compelling buy 2 get a $900 debit card promo at costco, so I did end up getting both a s20 ultra and s20+. Had the hardest time deciding on which to keep. s20+ is mostly definitely the better phone, but the ultra is just the more interesting option... and so here we are.

    • Size wise, coming from a note10+, the ultra is slightly more narrow but taller. Also noticeably heavier due to the weird weight distribution. The huge camera hump doesn't smoothly transition into the back glass so expect your finger to feel a bit weird back there if you are holding the phone without a case. Speaking of which, the camera hump is quite tall so there are plenty of cases out there that barely protect the camera area... so one gotta pay attention to that. It did take me a week or 2 to get used to the weight on my pinky when holding it normally, but you get used to it.

    • The much flatter screen is easily the best part of the phone imo. minimal distortion and weird refraction on the curves unlike every other modern curvy phone these days. Just a joy to view. the taller screen + the smaller front camera means 18:9 videos that you often see from tech youtubers don't intrude into the camera area unlike the note 10+.

    • 120hz is great. 1080p cap is a bummer. No way to spin that. Samsung is apparently working on this, but who knows at this point. I'd still take it over 1440p 60 though. 120hz is noticeably more smooth than my 90hz pixel 4xl as well. I still occasionally see the phone drop down to 60hz, and my phone isn't really hot or low battery either. The quick fix is to just toggle 60/120hz... hopefully all these bugs are ironed out. This is definitely the most important feature in modern phones though. Would not recommend people buy a new phone that's not at least 90hz these days at over $400.

    • fp sensor is much better than my note 10+. Do note I'm still using the plastic film protector vs I switched to a glass loca based protector on the note. Still wish the sensor position was bigger though. Do note the fp sensor still works great in today's environment, while face unlock doesn't do shit on my pixel 4 xl with a mask on :)

    • software wise oneui is still probably the best rom for power users. The new ability to pin 3 apps in memory(5 for 16gb ram variant) is shocking how no one has really done that before. It's a game changer for people that well... play games. It's nice to keep chrome around too. I remember always being kinda disappointed with oneplus phones having a bunch of ram but my go to games still reload if I don't touch them for a few min. One annoying bug I noticed though is that clear all apps on the app switcher will remove the apps selected for quick launch, but those aren't actually deselected. So there has been times where I don't remember which app I saved in memory and had to open up every single app to see which I locked. Hopefully samsung addresses this. Also couldn't get music share to work though. At least not with my pixel 4. Not sure if it gotta be 2 recent samsung phones? Dex mode is still great. good lock still great. Bixby routines is also an underrated feature that I'd recommend people to mess around with. you can do some pretty dope stuff using it.

    • Battery life has been fine so far. Not amazing but not terrible either. definitely lasts longer than my pixel 4 xl on day to day use. Charging is snappy as well. will charge to 100% in an hr with the included 25w charger and the optional 45w charger (quicker for the earlier parts, but i wouldnt' recommend ppl going out to buy this). the samsung 15w qi charger works great too, charges to full in about an hr 40min. Not as fast as the new oneplus wireless charging solution, but this at least comes with a 25w charger and cable, while the oneplus has the cable built into the stand. Samsung has definitely caught up here to the competition for the most part, and while still mostly using non proprietary stuff. Finding usb-pd gear that has the proper ppt settings is still a challenge though, but the xiaomi mi bank 3 (2nd gen) I got does do 'super fast charge 2.0' on the phone.

    • So let's talk about the cameras... there has been a few updates, but its still not perfect and I'm not sure if updates will address the issues I have as a casual food pic taker. The things it does well at is the zoom up to about 10x is quite useable in good lighting. As someone that rarely used zoom before, I've been using it pretty often when I'm walking outside, snapping pics of deer and geese around here. Samsung color science is still samsung though, It will make a gray sky blue lol. The main sensor is generally fine too. Autofocus is still finicky at times and it has a habit of going out of focus right before you hit the shutter, so you sometimes gotta retake the shot. The biggest issue for me though is the large sensor does make taking shots of objects nearby... not so great. Has a very narrow... focal point or w/e, ie: natural blur of stuff besides the center of the frame... which might mess up your food pic or w/e. I remember having similar issues with the op7 pro. No issue with the note 10+, s20+, pixel 4 xl. I would not recommend this phone if you primary take pics of stuff on a desk.

    • 5g... well its 5g in 2020. t-mobile is shit in which it displays a 5g logo even if you aren't technically getting 5g, but just if you are connected to a tower that is compatible with 5g (wut). I believe they also have mmwave towers in atlanta but there is no way for me to find those towers on their website from what i can tell?

    • In terms of cases and accessories i like so far. 15w samsung wireless pad is great for the office for a quick top off without worrying about wires. guarantee to be 100% battery at the end of the day. 10000mah 25w wireless battery pack from samsung is pricey but its quite useful when out and about. can charge up the phone in an hr, has 2 usb-c ports so you can charge it while charging something else. wireless charger works with the galaxy watches and galaxy buds and other qi stuff. Galaxy buds+ are a nice upgrade over the first gen, mostly for the better battery and better voice calling. Wouldn't recommend going from last years to this year though not worth the cost to what you gain.

    • Current cases I like. ghostek covert has raise sides on all 4 corners, not just top and bottom like most cases. kickstand as well. rear camera is barely protected though. Samsung rugged case is nice, but gets fingerprints easily. Samsung silicon case is a nice and grippy case that does offer a bit of camera protection. Same with their leather case that feels incredibly nice in the hand. Don't expect these 2 to offer much drop protection though. Poetic affinity has a funky design that offers good grip and protection for a cheap price. spigen liquid crystal is something I get on all my phones. slim transparent design with corner protection and all spigen cases have a large protective ring around the camera area which is appreciated.

So overall what's the take? I do think the s20 line this year is good. especially with the price drops. I do believe people that are more camera experts can probably do some cool stuff with the ultra, but for your average joe, the s20 and s20+ have more reliable cameras.

But we aren't in normal times. I would highly recommend people not to buy a new phone at this time. Grab a cheaper used phone if you need a phone. It's not just that you might be out of a job sooner or later or already, but more of the practicality. You are stuck inside in your pajamas. A better camera doesn't matter! Who cares about 5g, I barely get 4g in my house! Get a dope oled lg tv if you got $1400 to burn.

As always post questions about stuff that I forgot. Stay safe!
