OnePlus software updates are not what they used to be

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:22 AM PDT

Just issuing a PSA. I know OnePlus have a great reputation for being one of the first OEMs to generally update their devices, but I want to let you know that they are falling behind on updates as of late. I've had the OnePlus 7T Pro since launch and its currently on the January 2020 security patch, with it now being April. They have moved to a policy of bi-monthly updates (one every other month) but in some respects they are falling behind this. They've split their OxygenOS versions into three packages - one for India, one 'global', and one EU. This has resulted in an overall slowdown in update delivery. They released an update several days ago (with march security patch but in April) but only for the global and India versions and have officially gotten the update and they've left EU out of the equation so far (which I'm on) and you can't install Global ROM OTA files on the EU version (I tried).

I've had two updates since the phone launched in October 2019, and some bugs are still present since launch, like chrome freezing randomly and locking up the entire phone. This bug is very annoying and hasn't been fixed since it came out. Same with a bug which sometimes doesn't let me attach anything in WhatsApp until I restart the phone. I almost returned the phone over these software issues but I trusted they'd be fixed - it hasn't happened.

Just wanted to let you know in case anyone wants to buy a OnePlus phone based on software support. Samsung these days updates their top tier phones pretty much on the 1st of the month every month usually matching the pixels (and they have way more devices to support). Same with Sony and even Xiaomi phones I've had recently. With OnePlus you can expect a security patch which is 1 month old, every 2.5 months or so.

I often see this type of post appear, I'm curious about which flagship phone you bought that you are still sticking with after 1/2 years or more.

After almost 2 years I'm still using the Huawei Mate 20 pro, I have yet to see a reason to change honestly to a new flagship device since everything that is out there currently, is the same just gimmicky things to differentiate.
