Pixel 3a -- One year as a daily driver

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 03:23 PM PDT

With the release of the Pixel 4a right around the corner I thought I'd give a review of my daily driver: the Pixel 3a.

    TL;DR The 2019 OG Nexus 5.

I bought the Pixel 3a last spring right after it was announced. I got it on sale for $299, which in hindsight was a really good deal. You can read/watch a ton of reviews on this phone, so I'm going try to focus on what I like about the phone and how it's held up after one year.

Although it uses a mid-range processor, the 3a has been really smooth for me and hasn't lost a step. Usually my phones get slower after about 12 months or so and I have to do a factory reset, but not with this one. It gives me hope that it'll last me at least one more year. More memory would be better, I suppose, but it doesn't bother me too much and wouldn't stop me from recommending this phone.

The camera has been terrific. Truly incredible. I have been asked several times whether I took a photo with a DSLR or used some sort of editing software. Not only does it take great photos but it takes them on the first try. I can't say enough good things about this camera. I don't really take many videos, so I don't feel qualified to judge video quality.

The battery life has been better than expected and the battery itself had held up really well. Between yesterday and today I got just over 6 hours SOT with 15% left in the tank. Adaptive brightness was turned on but the screen rarely goes below 50% in my house. I don't play mobile games, so that 6 hours was primarily web browsing, YouTube, and texting. Obviously the battery life takes a hit when I'm not constantly connected to solid WiFi, but I still think 6hrs SOT over a 24 hr period is pretty good. I did have a battery drain bug that lasted a couple months (battery would lose a lot of charge when left idle), but that seems to have been fixed.

I don't really have anything negative to say about the phone. Yes, more memory, waterproofing, and wireless charging would be nice, but for $299 I'm fine with those being left out. This phone reminds me a lot of the OG Nexus 5, which is probably my all-time favorite phone.

Apologies for stealing Apple's tagline, but this phone just works. I hope the 4a continues this streak.

Would you buy a 2020 Google Pixel 2 with the latest chip for $399?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 04:05 PM PDT

Would you? Nothing changes apart from the chip is improved. I'll even let you have nightsight and all the other pixel features from 2017-2020

Apple fans are drooling over the iphone SE which is basically a 2017 iphone 8 with the latest chip.

Is apple showing that the direction the industry has taken over the last few years has been for nothing? 18:9-20:9 screens aren't essential? Bezels are fine? Large screens are too big? Night mode is unnecessary? 2017 selfie cams are good enough? face unlock/in-screen fingerprint scanners etc a waste of tech?

Is a faster chip all that is needed to upgrade a 3 year old phone these days? And a cheap price?

Personally I would be interested in an LG G2 revival. That was a nice phone.

    [App] Samsung Band Selection app

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:22 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I put together an app that lets you access Samsung's band selection hidden settings which will let you see all your supported bands (5G, 4G LTE, 3G, etc) as well as lock the device to specific bands, regardless of which carrier's SIM card is in your phone.

App is available for download on the Play Store here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ray.samsungbandselection

    How-to video: https://youtu.be/quMU2ZZg74E

You can use this app to discover whether there are specific bands that have been deployed your area by locking your device to those bands and seeing if you are maintaining a proper connection. (You can also use the *#0011# menu to see exactly how many slices of that band is available, 5x5, 10x10, 15x15, etc)

It can also come in handy if you run into congestion with the automatically selected bands and would like to force the device into a lesser congested band.

As implied by the title and app name, this will only work on Samsung phones running Samsung software. Tested on One UI 2.0 (Android 10) devices so far.

    Update:

    • I've received early reports that at least some One UI 1.0 devices are NOT working with this hidden menu. /u/crazypostman21 tested it with his US Unlocked Note8 (with Verizon SIM) and the band selection menu failed to work on that device.
    • /u/doggodoesaflipinabox reported that it worked for his T-Mobile-branded Galaxy S8

Due to /r/Android rules, had to mirror the entire post rather than just link to it.
