3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 142)

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Mobile gamers, unite! During these stay-inside-don't-go-out days, writing these posts feels more important than ever before :)

So here goes; my weekly mobile game recommendations summary based on the 3 most interesting games I played last week. I hope you'll enjoy.

This week, including a beautiful story-driven indie RPG heavily inspired by Pokémon, a very high-quality team-based RPG based on the 'Seven Deadly Sins' franchise, and a 'Beat Saber'-inspired music rhythm game with EDM and pop-music soundtracks.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 142 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here are the games:

Coromon [Game Size: 173 MB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Tactical / Adventure / Pokémon-like - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Coromon is a high-quality story-driven Pokémon-inspired (not a direct clone) tactical RPG indie game with 120+ monsters to catch and evolve, amazing soundtracks, lots of quests, and a promise of multiplayer being added if the game takes off in popularity. It's essentially the mobile Pokémon game Nintendo doesn't want to provide!

The core gameplay is fun, and we can even customize the attributes of our Coromon through a stat point system, which allows us to make them fit our preferred play-style and strategies - unlike in Pokémon. Oh, and there's controller support!

There's currently no monetization, but it seems the developer intends to sell the game for a $2 premium price.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross [Game Size: 2.55 GB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Strategy / Gacha - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross is a huge team-based strategy RPG based on the anime/manga by the same name, and the quality of this game, from graphics, to UI, to the story, really just blew me away.

The game has us unlock and level up heroes, of which we select 3 to take into battle. Each hero has 3 abilities, and during combat, we draw 7 random abilities at a time, of which we select 3 to use during our turn. We can also merge duplicate abilities we've drawn to increases their attack power, which does sacrifice one attack slot, however. I really enjoyed this combat system, and the quests and storyline is decently interesting as well.

New heroes are pulled from a relatively generous Gacha system, which makes the game Pay-to-Progress faster, but with a heavy focus on PvE, this doesn't ruin the game as a strictly Free player.

The game does also features an energy system, which may frustrate players who enjoy lengthy play-sessions. However, energy can be restored inexpensively using premium currency earned through normal gameplay - so it won't impact most players.

Sonic Cat [Total Game Size: 304 MB] (free)

Genre: Music / Rhythm - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Sonic Cat is a music rhythm game inspired by the VR-title 'Beat Saber', in which we slash tiles falling from the top of the screen to the beat of EDM and Pop songs by tapping either the left or right side of the screen.

The game features plenty of tracks, most of which unlock as we progress, although we can also watch ads or spend in-game currency to unlock new tracks immediately. The futuristic art-style is beautiful and makes the tracks very enjoyable to play and beat, although the gameplay loop gets a bit repetitive after a while.

Monetization happens through forced and incentivized ads, and iAPs for more of the only in-game currency, which can be used to unlock new tracks and cosmetics for our character.

Highly recommend Steel & Flesh 2! Mount & Blade fans will love it!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:32 AM PDT

It looks very identical so I wouldn't be surprised if it's inspired by Mount and Blade, loving it so far. I keep looking at highly recommended great games but I never saw this. Great for those still aching mount and blade or waiting for the Bannerlord release.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:45 AM PDT

What is up with energy usage in games? For what reason do they have timed recoveries? Also It's probably cos I'm not used to it but showing an ad after every puzzle completed is a sure fire way for me to delete ur app. It's like they dont want me to play their games.

l saw Morphite on sale on Ipad for 0.99$, but where is it on playstore?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 02:28 AM PDT

Pretty sure it was on playstore as l added it to my wishlist at some point but now l cannot find it. The game is only 2-3 years , already not compatible with android and get removed? Or maybe it is now region locked in playstore so l cannot find it?
