3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 141)

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:14 AM PDT

Happy weekends, fellow mobile gamers! And welcome to my weekly summary of game recommendations based on the 3 most interesting games I played last week. Hope you'll enjoy :)

This week, the games include a unique RPG shooter with idle progression, an addictive new PvP bowling game with awesome graphics, and a new strategy PvP game very reminiscent of Clash Royale and MINIMax Tinyverse.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 141 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here are the games:

War Tortoise 2 [Game Size: 863 MB] (free)

Genre: Idle / RPG / Shooter - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Idle

    tl;dr review:

War Tortoise 2 is an idle shooter with RPG-like progression. The game is fun, the concept and gameplay is very unique, and progression is decently paced.

Our objective is to protect our war tortoise as it travels around an open-world map to conquer territories. We set the target destination for our tortoise, and then buy new units and upgrade our weapons to protect ourselves against the waves of enemies standing between us and our destination.

As an idle game, our tortoise and units can shoot enemies automatically, even though manual aiming is also an option. Unlike typical idle games though, we don't get to decide when we want to reset our progress. Instead, we reset and get a huge stat boost whenever our War Tortoise dies, which makes death really meaningful in this game.

Monetization happens through occasional incentivized ads that never feel necessary to progress in the game, and iAPs that allow us to progress faster - if we want to.

Bowling Crew [Game Size: 164 MB] (free)

Genre: Sport / PvP / Action / Bowling - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Bowling Crew is a brand new 1v1 real-time bowling game in the vein of Golf Battle, which means we bet a certain amount of in-game gold to enter a match, with the winner taking it all.

Each match consists of just 3 rounds of turn-based bowling, where we can pick 1 of 3 bowling balls on every shot, with 6 bowling balls in our inventory in total. We get to position, aim, and define the speed of each shot, and at the of the 3 rounds, the player with the most points wins the match.

Between matches, we open lootboxes to earn more of the same bowling ball so that we can level it up to become stronger, and with a ton of different bowling balls, there are lots of different winning strategies to explore.

The gameplay is fun, the graphics are great, and despite the monetization that definitely allows us to progress faster if we buy iAPs, I haven't yet had any issues with the fairness of the matchmaking system.

World War Doh [Total Game Size: 374 MB] (free)

Genre: Strategy / PvP / Clash Royale-like - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

World War Doh is a Clash Royale-like PvP game where we control a main hero and deploy additional units in 1v1 fights not too unlike those found in MINIMax Tinyverse.

The progression and UI is exactly like in Clash Royale, which means wait-time lootboxes that reward us with gold and unit cards. The main differentiating elements are that killing the opposing hero provides an instant win, and that chests spawn throughout each match, which allows us to recover HP or gain mana when picked up.

Monetizing through iAPs to buy more cards, the game is inevitably somewhat Pay-to-Win, and JamCity isn't exactly known for making fair monetization systems. So while the game has great humor and is fun, I'd warn against spending too much time on it. If you enjoy the gameplay, I'd instead recommend MINIMax Tinyverse.

Any decent turn based strategy games?

The control scheme on smartphones seems perfect for turn based strategy but i mostly find pay to win trash.

Any ethical games with many, many hours of gameplay?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 01:21 PM PDT

Ethical games as in no IAP, no energy timers, no wait times, just pure fun and grind. I'm looking for an RPG game with 3D elements. I've heard of Eternium but it's not my style of game. I liked the game Ravensword (probably one of my all time favorite games on mobile) and OSRS but I just can't buy membership unfortunately. Any help is appreciated. If you got ANY ethical game then drop your suggestion down below too because they're pretty hard to come by.

Seven Scrolls is a fantastic Imbroglio style game

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 08:56 AM PDT

It is paid but worth a try even for a refund if you like this style of game

Michael Brough ( the creator of imbroglio ) even tweeted the release of this game. He will not be porting Imbroglio to Android so having his support of this game is pretty sweet. You collect scrolls that trigger during certain in game events and can create some crazy combos.

The only thing I wish is that there were online leaderboards. Either way I've been wishing for a Michael Brought game to come to Android for a while and this satisfies my thirst.

The creator of this game even cites the Imbroglio creator within the game which makes me feel even better about playing this.

I'm not a dev. Just someone desperate for a Michael Brought game on Android. And here it SORT OF is 👌🏼

It is paid. But it really is worth it if you like Michael Brough and his work.

    Here's the laannk:

    LF: Long Term mobile game

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 12:37 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I recently got a new phone and have some free time on my hands. I'm looking to get into a F2P Gatcha style game with fair but rewarding mechanics?

Some games I currently / historically have played in the past are

    • Clash of Clans
    • Clash Royal
    • Brawl Stars
    • Animal Crossing Pocket Camp
    • Nexon's: Legend of Cao Cao ROTK
    • Dragon Quest of the Stars

Of the list, I've only spent money on ROTK. I felt like the rest of the games were relatively fair and enjoyable without spending money.

I'm okay with spending some pocket change on a mobile game as long as I feel like the ratio / payoff is good. That being said, I'm still relatively new to Gatcha style games so im not sure what ones out there are even worth my time.

Currently, I have my eyes on - Dragon Ball Legends - Dragon Quest of the Stars (I just downloaded) - Final Fantasy Brave Exvius

Any insight or recommendations regarding a solid mobile game I can commit to would be really appreciated.

Thanks if you read this far, I'm not sure what other communities to reach out to so I'm just posting here.

Apologies if the format is bad, on mobile.

Games that dont require constant attention

    Posted: 13 Mar 2020 02:15 PM PDT

I'm looking for game suggestions that don't require much attention and constant attention.

I am looking for games that I can play at work. Maybe a much cute or two, to a few minutes at s time and put down in between and then come back to it.

Anything that requires real time action is out.

I'm a big fan of RPGs if there any that meet the criteria.

Otherwise I'm open to genres and suggestions.

    Thanks for any help.

[Recommendation] A game like Autumn Dynasty

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:54 AM PDT

Autumn Dynasty is a strategy/military game where the player controls troops like horsemen, archers, catapults to defeat the enemy forces and build barracks, archer towers, and the like.

I especially liked the simple graphics (a 2D bird's eye view map) and control system (guiding the troops with brush strokes).

What are some similar games that I'd like?

[REQUEST] Looking for a good gacha game to play

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 06:42 AM PDT

    • You can ignore this part if you want

Used to play Raid and got really lucky, I have 2 legendary champs both are really good (one of them is Valkyrie) and I have a very good epic champ lineup for a f2p player; played raid for 6 months to level 53/60, stopped because it was grindy, p2w (even though I'm considered one of the lucky ones), and took way too much of my day.

I still currently play Honkai Impact 3 (Highly Recommend), about 3 months in, totally love the game and I have very good Valkyries (hor, ch, ae to name a few), lvl 71/85, only paid for monthly pass and bp because I loved it so much. Since I've been playing it for quite some time, it's getting a bit too repetitive and it's harder to get crystals now since I'm almost done with the campaign.

Basically I need something that gives me a consistent shot of dopamine.

    *

So I'm looking for something that has:

    • Active gameplay (No auto mode)

    • Active PvP (Unlike raid which only lets you fight bots of other players' characters)

    • Active/Growing community

    • Turn based is okay but I'd rather something like hi3

    • F2P friendly (You can decently progress and also be able to at least have a fighting chance against p2w players)

    • 3D Graphics are a plus but not too important

Might be too much to ask, but who knows, there might be a game that fits my criteria (that's basically hi3, but it doesn't have pvp. It has co-op)

Any games like We Happy Few?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:11 AM PDT

Bored to death, need a game.

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:44 AM PDT

Hey guys, Im locked indoors for 2 weeks and i got to playing something decent. Me and my friends have been playing CoC, clash royale, rise of kings, summoners war. We are currently playing era of chaos but it has too much limitations on the amount you can play daily. Need a f2p game with pvp and awesome guild content. Thanks all.

Edit: we have kids so a game with some idle (not all) is most welcome

    [REQUEST] A tactical-turn based shooter

[REQUEST] As weird as it sounds, are there any good games centered around dragons?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:08 AM PDT

Back in the day I had a lot of time to fool around with some of the shitty freemium games, I played a few of the "breed your dragons" clones of eachother, but I mostly stayed a PC player.

Now few years later, as I went through several phones without playing at all and looking to get some decent games in, are there any worthwhile games involving dragons? They are still my weird childhood passion.

Of couse I would very much prefer no IAP above all, but I can deal with a fremium if the "free grind" does not take exorbitant amounts of time. Genre-wise I really have no preference.
