Looking for APKs of TVG and Frndly TV from Amazon Fire

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:51 AM PST

I'm looking for APKs of TVG, STIRR, and Frndly TV from the Amazon Fire to sideload onto my NVidia Shield. Would anyone know how I could obtain them? When I attempt to add the apps, they don't show up in my cloud on the Amazon appstore, so I'm unable to get them. The STIRR app would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

Android Live TV will not update electronic program guide (EPG)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:38 AM PST

    Hello Fellow Cord-Cutters!

I just wanted to share a bit of information regarding the use of the Android Live TV app. My setup is HDHomeRun Quatro and several NVidia Shields. Along with watching OTA channels via the HDHomeRun, I also use Pluto as well as the Cumulus app for additional IPTV channels (so far I have found 54 english channels that I have loaded on Cumulus). One issue I grappled with for some time is the EPG listings would disappear after a short time and the only way to get them back was to go into the Live Channels setting and re-scan the channels.

There are a few things you must do to eliminate this problem. First, press the NVidia Home button to come out the Live Channels app. Now, go up to Apps and press the key to see a listing of all your installed apps. Now scroll to the Live Channels app and long-press on the remote. That will bring up a menu. Go down to "Info" and press enter. scroll down and make sure "Notifications" are enabled. Next go down to permissions and enable both items. Go to "Additional Permissions" and enable the single item too.

One more very important thing you must do. Now press the "Home" button to go to the NVidia Shield home screen. Go up to the right top corner and select "Settings". Go down to device settings and press enter. Scroll down and select "Location" If it is off, go into it and select "Use Wi-Fi for location". For me this was the one thing that was missing. It seems that Pluto (being an Android app) requires this to be on to work correctly. And BTW, my Shields are connected through ethernet (not Wi-Fi). After making these changes, the EPG works without a problem! Hope this helps.

    Display mode recommendations

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:59 AM PST

Hey everyone! I recently bought a Mi box S for my Samsung Q60R (cheapest, 2019 version of Qled). I will mostly use it for IPTV that doesn't support 4k so there's no need for me to set the display to 4k. However, when trying to set it to 1080p@60hz there seems to be some problems - the image sometimes kinda lags a little and there's a bit of a weird soap opera effect. It's also weird because in my television settings I switched off auto motion plus completely. Any advice on what display mode I should use?

Can't Use Voice Commands to Cast to Nvidia Shield (or built in Chromecast on some TVs)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:50 PM PST

I got off a long troubleshooting chat with Google on the subject issue. To save others the time, here's the relevant info:

Google Response: "Our engineering team is aware of the issue where customers who have built in Chromecast for Vizio, Sony and Nvidia Shield products are having problems using voice commands to cast on the TVs. The product and engineering team are already aware of it and are coordinating this with the said partners. As of now, we are still waiting for their investigation and review to find a stable fix."

To help them with their investigation, for anyone with the issue they wanted me to do the following:

"We would need your help with investigating this further by filing a feedback from your Google Home app. Just open the app and at the top right, tap your account. Tap "Help & Feedback" and then "Submit feedback report (under the Google Home section) with the subject: "CC T3 Unable to recognize voice command". Also list the firmware version of your TV and built in Chromecast"

Other relevant info: I tried all the solutions in this thread, and it didn't work for me. Feel free to try in vain like I did if you like. https://piunikaweb.com/2019/11/20/nvidia-shield-google-home-integration-is-broken-for-some-but-theres-a-way-out/

Nvidia support didn't really help me at all. They did confirm a separate issue where the Shield cannot display Google Photos in its screensaver using the "Photo Frames" from Google Photos. They said they were aware, and can't comment. They wouldn't provide an ETA on this. For the voice command issue, they told me to contact Google, but they weren't very helpful and didn't seem to take it very seriously.

whats the correct resolution for 4K on Xiaomi Mi Box S

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 02:35 AM PST

I bought this box on december together with a new monitor:

    https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07GLR6RQF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It worked perfectly for 2 weeks until I noticed the stremed content was not 4K, just HD.

So I changed the settings on the display menu to 4k-2k at 30fps, after I did that the screen flickered and had no error., so I restarted netflix and still the same problem.

So I decided to Turn OFF the box and Turn it on again, after I did that, the box didnt boot Again.

I contacted Amazon and I returned the box, the refunded me the money and I bought it again.

Any tips so this doesnt happen again? Or maybe I had just bad luck with this unit? and it shouldnt fail again

Mi box s hdr to sdr issues

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:06 AM PST

I know hdr contents are much better than sdr ones but on some older TV models that don't came with a hdr supported panel, playing hdr videos on them is a nightmare. Not only the image is dim and dark, but also has a greyish looking on it. I found this out when I played Netflix with Mi box s on my old TV, nowdays I would say 70% content on Netflix are forced to be played in hdr and there's no way to switch it manually. The only option I found in settings related to the issue was hdr to sdr, but neither automatic or open seems to work. Do you guys have a similar problem? btw I am on oreo rgb8bit 4k2k 60fps

What would be the best product to get to use led light strip behind the TV( LG smart tv) and use with an Nvidia shield so the colours change with the media on screen.

Can an Android Tablet function as an AndroidTV? Why not? It would be so useful to chromecast TO a (wall mounted) tablet.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:43 PM PST

Imagine you can take your old android tablet that no longer holds a charge unless plugged in ( say a HP Touchpad, Fire tablet, cheaper walmart brand ones etc) and wall mount them in you kitchen.

Imagine there are generic $5 bluetooth remotes that let you channel flip ( between netflix hulu youtube etc.)

Why is this not possible I wonder.

Mi box S question: Does it play high bitrate movies?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:36 PM PST

Hi, Ive got a phillips 4k tv and I usually play movies directly on it from my external SSD. Sadly, it only plays 20-30GB 4k HDR movies, but all the high bitrate movies lags, stutters on it. (Talking about 60-90mb/s bitrate movies.) Thats where the mi box S came to mind. So the question is, is it capable of playing those movies stutter free? Thanks in advance!

    Zoomtak uplus is Awesome

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:35 PM PST

I just wanted to drop by to say the Zoomtak Uplus tv box is still an awesome tv box. At our house we have lovers of youtube and netflix.

One hiccup with netflix though. When you try to install netflix through the play store it says "this device is not compatible". We overcame this by using an older version of the netflix provided apk. The specific version we use that is successful is: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/netflix-inc/netflix/netflix-3-16-6-build-5382-release/netflix-3-16-6-build-5382-android-apk-download/download/

Some other things worth mentioning. The youtube/netflix found within our seiki tv are much much slower than the instantaneous performance provided by the zoomtak uplus' arm64-bit 8-core soc with android 6 on it. zoomtak uplus is a joy to use. I wouldn't hesitate in buying another zoomtak product.

I wish they would also allow for it to be a used as an SBC with well-documented linux install alternatives for the same hardware. I also wish they sold alternatives that allowed for more RAM for more desktop-pc like purposes.
