Android Questions: Factory Unlocked vs Carrier Unlocked

Android Questions: Factory Unlocked vs Carrier Unlocked

    Factory Unlocked vs Carrier Unlocked

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:23 AM PST

Preface: I am NOT interested in the respect to unlocking the bootloader.

I know that factory unlocked phones typically will work with any US carrier. While obviously carrier phones are locked to that network.

So my question is this. I have an S10+ and an S10 5G, both are paid off. If I have the carrier unlock them, will I be able to use them on any carrier I want?

I specifically want to use them on Fi. I looked at the bands that the phones support vs what Fi requires and it's close enough a match that I am willing to try it.

How to store a lot of Smartphones?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:02 AM PST

I Purchased a lot of 60+ smartphones. Mostly Androids, a few iPhones, some older Nokia windows phones. I repair them and sell them. I've been doing this for a while but I'd buy 3-5 phones at once till now. So storing wasn't a problem. But How do I safely store 70~ phones?

Looking for answer: Do I keep them on or off? If on, how to charge all of them? Does keeping them all at one shelf a safety hazard? These are dodgy semi-working smartphones afterall. Does keeping them in shelf for a long time degrade the battery since a lot of them are working with minor problems.

    Thanks in advance.

Chrome on Android huge battery drain

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 03:59 AM PST

I've noticed that chrome is using up a huge amount of my battery. The weird part is it will show that I have way more active use time then I actually do. Say 2 hours when I only used it for maybe 20 minutes. I'm on the pixel 4. Is anybody else experincing this.

Internal storage space is full, but it shouldn't be. Can't install apps. Please help.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:49 AM PST

According to my phone and every application I've downloaded, "other" files are taking up a whopping 14GB of files on my internal storage (which is 16GB), despite moving EVERY application to the SD card. When I open it up in a file manager and select the option to show hidden files and then select every single folder on the device, it comes up with 2.18 GB, which sounds about right. So what the hell is taking up the other 13GB ? I need to install a 1GB app and then move it to my SD card, but I can't, because my storage is mysteriously gone for reasons I don't understand.

I'm not the only person OTI to have this problem, and extensive Googling has revealed no solution or even any idea what might be causing it. Some Android devices just randomly lose storage space, apparently.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Orbit J2, and it's brand new. Can anyone help me out with this? It's fucking maddening.

Unable to connect to enter proper Wi-Fi password

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 03:33 AM PST

Hello, as I've written in the title, when entering the password to my network, the 'Connect' button is active only for 4 or 10 characters, which is a bit of a nuissance, since my password is 12 characters long. Is there any fix to this? The phone is a brand new Huawei P30, fresh out of the box, I suppose that a system update could fix the issue, however in this situation I'm not really keen on downloading 5gb with the data transfer. Restarting the router, phone, its network settings does not work. Thank you in advance, have a nice day.

Calls from different sources showing up under the same incorrect name

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:07 PM PST

For about the past year, several incoming calls from different sources are showing up as coming from, let's say, Janice. Janice is an actual contact, though the last time she called me was over 2 years ago.

Her name appears most of the time when I get calls from unknown numbers, both spam and legitimate. But it also comes up when I get calls from people I know, have saved as contacts, and whose name comes up correctly some of the time. For instance, sometimes my dad shows up as Dad, and sometimes he shows up as Janice, so I never really know who is calling when her name appears. I just know that it is probably not actually Janice.

I am using a first generation Google Pixel XL on Google Fi. I haven't been able to find any similar problems, so I haven't tried much. But since it's been an ongoing problem, I have restarted my phone and cleared the cache, browsing history, etc. in the time since it started.

Youtube (and youtube vanced) automatically stops/pauses after a certain period (even while screen is on)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:58 AM PST

Why does my youtube and vanced pauses after a while? I thought it was due to doze or other battery saving features (turns out it pauses the video, instead of my theory that the app is closed), so I tried playing videos while screen is on the whole time, it pauses itself after a while.

What are the possible causes for this?

Looking for Starter Guide to Local Music Library

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:06 AM PST

Hey all. I am not new to Android, but I am very new to wanting to have music/podcasts on my phone. But I have never had music on my phone so I'm not sure where exactly to start.. here's what I'm looking for, and if someone could point me to resources, I would greatly appreciate it! Again, sorry if they are very easy questions. I tried to do a search on the subreddit but was really only finding hits that were 7-9 years old.

I want to have a local library.. I don't intend to use streaming services, I would likely have songs downloaded directly to my device. I may get them from old discs or purchase them and download them. Maybe I'll find a way to sync my PC and my phone, either wifi or USB.

If available, I would like to be able to organize these into my own custom "albums" (folders, categories, sub-categories maybe?).

How do I then play those songs? Is there already a built in Android player that works with local libraries in this way, or a good one-time purchase player that accomplishes this?

How do I disable constant alerts from Messages/Google Play store requesting permissions?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST

    Basically, what the title says.

I have a Blackberry running Android 8.1.0. I disabled the "Body Sensors" permission because I don't use any apps with a legitimate need for them. Now, every time I receive, look at, or write a text message, I get this annoying popup alert and alarm "ding" noise telling me that the Messages app (the standard Android text that came with the phone) won't work properly unless I turn the Body Sensors permission back on. This seems to be bullshit since my texts seem to be coming and going just fine. I also can't see any legitimate reason for my text messaging app to need to track my heart rate, steps, etc, which is what Body Sensors seems to do. I'm sick of the constant intrusion and noise from the notifications - how do I make it stop? Thanks!

Reminders are not firing. Support's next suggestion is to do a factory reset. Last time I tried that (for a different issue) it was a lot of work and didn't fix the problem. Suggestions?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:30 AM PST

    Pixel 3a XL.

I say "remind me to buy groceries in 5 minutes" then hit the save button. I see "reminder saved" with a time. 5 minutes later, no reminder happens.

I called support and they suggested trying it in Safe Mode. Did that, same result. They said the next thing to try was a factory reset. This seems to be tech support's #2 answer to everything. Last time I did that it didn't actually solve the problem and was a lot of work (setting all those apps up again? yuck).

Anyone got an idea of how to fix reminders that aren't firing that doesn't involve a factory reset?

IPhone 8 Plus or Samsung A70

Pixel 2XL is getting real buggy for me, any recommendations on custom ROMs?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:55 AM PST

So recently my Pixel 2XL has been getting really buggy. My Android auto no longer works, pressing the back button sometimes closes apps (no I am not pressing the home button), quick switching apps sometimes closes the app im switching to and restarts it, closing youtube when a video is playing sometimes closes the app (which I want to do) or ends up playing PiP except for the fact the PiP is hidden so I hear audio but cannot close the PiP unless I open up youtube again, google assistant randomly opens while the phone is closed when I've said nothing to name a few.

I've reset my phone twice now, yet the problems persist. Are there any recommendations for a ROM that's clean and (mostly) bug free?

I'm leaning towards Lineage OS or MIUI (only because I have to troubleshoot 4 iphones at home all the time - I don't like iOS, but the look of this ROM is pristine). Would love any input on what you guys use or would recommend! Thanks!

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:49 AM PST

I might just be crazy but It seems like autocorrect gets inactivated in certain applications. In the Brave browser it just doesn't autocorrect or doest it very seldom. but writing this text in Boost for Reddit it has no problems to autocorrect everything my clumbsy fingers write.

Anyone know how to get the Google Assistant to stop searching for "Yes" when I answer a Yes/No question?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:31 AM PST

    1. Say to assistant: "Remind me to buy groceries in 3 hours"
    2. Assistant: "Do you want to save this?"
    3. "Yes"
    4. Assistant: [does a search]
    5. Assistant: "The rock group Yes was formed in 1978...."

    USB Tethering

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:03 AM PST

I've got a Chinese tablet(for the ones who know, it's an "Allview") and I want to use USB Tethering. On my Huawei phone, when I activate the function, a "Remote NDIS" driver appears in device manager, and I can tether. But on my tablet, absolutely nothing appears. I tried changing the cable, USB port, but nothing. Is there any workaround?

    Issues with email push

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:09 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I recently got a Samsung A70 but i'm having real issues with getting the email to sync without me going into the app. I've set up the account on Edison mail correctly, but for some reason the account doesn't appear in the accounts list in settings. When I try to add an account the email address account isn't even an option I can add.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to fix this?

    Thanks!

Details about Google Home's new Ambient Mode feature?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:31 AM PST

I've read some articles about the unveiling of Google Home's new Ambient Mode (do not confuse it with Chromecast's Ambient Mode) that is available on 2 Lenovo tablets / Nokia devices.

I've also read that this feature is slowly becoming available for more select android devices.

I understand that it's an "always on" state that can show ur pictures, take assistant commands, have some smart home related buttons on the screen and is somewhat comparable to Google's Smart Display products.

But I would like to know more about it, (considering Google did not make any official announcement about it) particularly if the tablet that has Ambient Mode enabled can also be used a like a Chromecast, as in: can you tell it to play (or cast to it) the services that you linked to your account? (such as Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, etc)

Thanks to all that will help me satisfy this curiosity, as I'm really thinking of buying such a tablet, but would also really like it to act as the Kitchen's "Chromecast device" too.

Is there an camera app that disables touch when recording video?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:27 AM PST

i hate the feeling of having to avoid the landmines on the screen when recording anything. it's like anywhere you touch it does something. i want an app that disables the touchscreen or at least requires a complicated sequence of touches to get touch screen access back.

How do I turn off the Google weather notifications?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 02:54 PM PST

    This notification

Edit: some clarifications, clicking the notification brings up the google weather webpage within the Google app browser. So I can't block it from sending notifications on a browser level like I could have done in chrome, neither can I block the source app from sending notifications, or rather I don't want to since that would block all Google app notifications

I don't have any assistant routines at all, or any assistant subscriptions that would send weather updates

Exchange emails sometimes syncing despite sync being turned off

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:21 AM PST

Have a OnePlus 6T on Android 9. I have my work exchange account set up to get the calendar on my phone so I can arrange non work stuff around any work meetings, but I don't want to get work emails out of work, so I only have calendar synced and emails are definitely not.

Despite that, occasionally when I refresh my emails in the gmail app, it decides to pull all my work emails through.

I'm not really sure if this an exchange or android issue, but wondered if anyone else had come across it and managed a fix? Thanks.
