Unpopular opinion: 3-button navigation is just flat out easier to use than gestures and is also quintessential Android

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 02:55 PM PST

About a week ago I decided to switch back to 3-button navigation just to see how much different it was now compared to the gesture navigation that I've gotten used to on my Pixel 3.

To my surprise, I found that it was just way easier to use. Going Home was faster, swiping the slideout menus were easier and less error prone, double tap to flip apps was super quick, accessing the Assistant made more sense. It just all worked.

Not only that but it really just feels like signature part of Android. If you see someone with the three icons at the bottom of the screen, you instantly know they're an Android user. And if they're filled in, you further instantly know they're a Pixel user.

I'm glad that they brought back the option to use 3-button Nav in Android 10, but I'm worried that it's only a temporary option and it'll be gone in Android 11 or 12. The new "smaller" Assistant is only available in gesture nav, and it makes me think what else they'll remove if you're using the 3-button Nav. They already removed the hold-to-split action on the overview button, which was super useful for multi-tasking.

Just taken Delivery of the CAT S52, can try and answer any questions.

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:22 AM PST

I have been using the CAT S41 for over 2 years so am used to midrange CAT phones.

My main reason for getting the S52 is due to bluetooth issues that developed on my S41( could be software, could be aging hardware but its annoying).

Current worries are battery life going from 5000mAh to 3100mAh. I was worried about the screen but even with a much lower ppi density the colours and image quality seem to be far better then the S41 I guess that's due to moving away from TFT.

Headphone and charging port do not have covers like the S41 which after 2 years I don't trust mine anymore.

Remember the old menu key of Android 2.3 ? Now it's finally gone

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 09:19 AM PST

Starting from Android 4.0, if you installed an app that targeted Android version 2.3 and below, you'd see a menu key on the navigation bar:

    http://www.kylook.com/press/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Android-Where-is-Menu-Button_2.jpg

This is how it worked for a very long time, for backward compatibility, and nowadays it's extremely rare to find such apps.

I saw a thread here on reddit asking why it's not shown anymore (here) for some app, and now the answer is official (here):

This was intentionally removed as the API has been deprecated for several releases now. So, this is working as intended.

So, as of Android 10, if you install an app that was targeted for this very old Android version, you won't see the menu key on the navigation bar anymore. The app will work, but you won't be able to click the menu key.

EDIT: got an article about this here:

Update on the "Play Store Balance Expiry" issue.

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 05:51 AM PST

    Previous post.

I've had multiple communications with the Google Pay support team since losing the $63 and these are the few information I gathered from them -

    • I got an email from "supervisors on the floor" saying this -

Opinion Reward was stably released in the year 2018 therefore, you will not be able to see history beyond it.

I'm guessing this stable / public release is when the "credits expires in one year" rule started getting enforced. During the beta period before that point, Google wasn't enforcing that rule. One year after Opinion Rewards went stable / public, any reward credit 1+ year old expired. :(

    • Balance expires in batches; not on exact one year after they were credited. The rep didn't mention whether they do the batch expiry once a month or "x number of oldest credit together."

Additionally, via today's XDA article, I saw these two statements from Google -

You may have seen a decrease in your Google Play balance recently, caused by a bulk expiration of Google Play credits older than one year. If you have been adversely affected by this, please check back next week for an update.

    and

Google Opinion Rewards recognizes that it may be difficult to know when your Google Play credits will expire. We are currently making updates to give you notice of impending expiration.

Updated Messages Beta - it says "Chat features from Google provided by Jibe Mobile"

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:03 PM PST

Like the title says, I just updated the Messages beta app through the Play Store. I had previously used the RCS "hack" and it's still working (I'm in the US with an Unlocked Note 9).

My app now says "Chat features from Google provided by Jibe Mobile. Terms of Service."

    Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/AkoPeQI.png

Does anyone else see this? I'm curious if the text changes based on if you're using a carrier that officially supports it vs if you used the "hack" like I did.

I also know that, at least for the US, Google has carrier-specific "instances" that people manually switched to if the "hack" stopped working for them.
