    Weekly Questions Thread - November 18, 2019

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 02:56 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Epic Games is launching an Android game store in 2019 with 88% revenue share [XDAdevelopers]

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:31 AM PST

Now Epic Games has announced their own application store, with one big attraction: developers will get 88% of revenue generated by their app. This means that the company will only take 12% of all profits. To contrast, the Google Play Store will earn developers 70% of all revenue generated, with 30% going to Google. What's more, if you're using Unreal Engine, then the 5% engine royalty will be taken out of Epic's 12% profit, not your 88%.

How does Android determine if an app has "High Battery Usage" and why does it differ on different devices?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:43 AM PST

My app works flawlessly on many Android/Device versions with the exception of OnePlus devices. Users of OnePlus devices using my app reported that the "High power usage reminder" notifications pops up.

I would like to do something about it, and not just advise users to turn off the battery optimisation for the app, but it is very difficult to do so if I don't know what exactly triggers this notification and why it only appears on OnePlus devices.

    I would need some advice.

    Thank you in advance!

Admob app ("Google AdSense") goes away? How come? Any alternative?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:22 AM PST

Admob app ("Google AdSense") goes away? How come? Any alternative?

Today I got an email saying this:

    https://preview.redd.it/9456qwm14gz31.png?width=726&format=png&auto=webp&s=a307a165b5f79b63a666b996256d9d2b19f51f5e

Is the "Google AdSense" app going away? Or they just stop supporting?

How come? What will be the alternative? Are there other ad networks that have a nice app like this one? That can show a nice widget, graphs, etc ... ?

Will Google provide a new app?

    Back button lifecycle

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 04:12 AM PST

When pressing the back button then the onResume() activity lifecycle is called on the previous activity, but both onCreate() and onStart() are not called. Do I need to write everything in onCreate() inside onResume() also?

    Take Home assignment review request

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 07:10 AM PST

Hey guys, i'm a mid level android developer which recently did a take home assignment for a company in my country.

I finished it about a week ago and was actually hired by the company, but i would like to ask you guys for a in depth review (if that isn't much to ask) of the whole project and how i could improve it to a senior level standpoint.

I know that some obvious things like Clean Architecture would improve the code, but i'm still integrating that on my development pipeline.

Heres the link to the project.

Also, most of the code comments are in Portuguese since thats my native language, but i don't mind translating it to English if necessary.

    Thanks a lot!

    Altrnative to redeemco

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 06:36 AM PST

    Hi,

I was looking for a service to easily distribute redeem codes for both android and iOS and was pointed towards https://redeemco.com/index.php which kind of like does what I'm looking for - but it seems to be not really used any more. Their homepage was last updated 2016, if I try to contact them I get no response and the company providing the service doesn't actively promote it. So does anyone know an alternative that can be used to indirectly distribute promo codes fo Android and iOS apps to users?

    Thanks,

    Thomas

How to find out if an app in Google play store is a native app?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 06:35 AM PST

I am not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this question. Currently I am working on a thesis and I am looking for an existing native App and the equivalent as progressive web app.

Is there a simple way to find out with 100% certainty if an app in the Google play store is a native App (app specifically developed for Android using Java or kotlin) and not possibly a hybrid app (developed using web technologies like HTML, CSS and running in a native webview container)?

I have very basic knowledge in the field of android development. I am planning to build an app that helps android integrate well with linux. It would sync notifications betweeen phone and the desktop(like pushbullet) and allow the user to make and recieve calls from pc.

I im looking for a method to sync the call between phone and pc. Can someone point me to the right direction. Even slightest hint would help a lot.

    Thanks

Artifact Finder - Search Maven Artifacts by Class Name

Artifact Finder - Search Maven Artifacts by Class Name

It is always annoying for me to find the coordinates for AndroidX maven artifacts so I've just published an open source Android Studio plugin which lets you search maven artifacts by class name.
    https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/13320-artifact-finder
    Source code: https://github.com/yigit/ArtifactFinder

Currently, it indices all of AndroidX + some external artifacts. Feel free to send a PR to add your favorite artifact:
https://github.com/yigit/ArtifactFinder/blob/master/artifactfinder/src/main/kotlin/com/birbit/artifactfinder/ExternalSources.kt. I'll try to curate a better list for most popular Android libraries.

    Android MVVM book

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 01:22 AM PST

    Hi!

I just started working in a company in which the Android applications are done with MVVM and Dagger 2. I (mostly) understand Dagger, but I'm really lost with MVVM. Do you have any course or book in which MVVM is explained?

I'd appreciate any help about this topic :)

    Cheers!

How to incorporate react-native into ionic?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 01:17 AM PST

Suppose I have one app built using ionic for the general framework and one app built using react-native for the google map that is to be used inside the general framework built in ionic.

So an easy example would be say the general framework being food delivery app that is built in ionic.

Inside that food delivery, I would need to incorporate a google map built with react-native

How would I go about implementing it?

For example, if I have two android native apps, then I could have one huge android native "container" where by I could create #1 button in that container and #2 button in that container and by pressing on #1 button, it refers to the main activity of the first android native app while pressing the #2 button refers to the main activity of the second android native app.

How would I generally go about implementing react-native into ionic?

Deploying Android app into production on emulator running in Windows?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 12:56 AM PST

Let's say you've got a complex Android app that runs on proprietary devices. At some point, due to reasons outside your control, you need to transfer this functionality to run on Windows.

The simplest solution would be to launch an emulator on Windows (for example: Genymotion) and run the same app inside the emulator. While the solution sounds simple, I can't get rid of a feeling that there are zillion potential issues in it.

What problems would you anticipate if you'd need to implement such a solution?

What is Google's current stance on using accessibility serivces for non accessibility related features?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 02:56 PM PST

A while back there was a big stir when Google announced it was going to ban apps from using accessibility features for reasons other than helping users with disabilities.

I know the resulting response by the community caused Google to reconsider and instate a 30 day re-evaluation period of that policy. However, I haven't really been able to find much information on what the result of this re-evaluation has been.

Is it still ok to use accessibility services for non accessibility related features? If yes, do I need to declare them in a special way?

    Thank you!

For context, I'm the dev of Dynamic Rotation Control, an adaptation of the original Adaptive Rotation Lock, which hasn't been updated in a long time. By far the most requested feature by users is the ability to blacklist certain apps. This requires my app to know at any point which app is currently in the foreground. For this I need the accessibility service.

Question: `onDestroy` of Fragment can be called before `onCreateView` ?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 10:59 PM PST

Today I got a weird crash, that shows me that this could happen.

    The reason:
I have `lateinit var` that is initialized in `onCreateView` , and the crash report says that it wasn't initialized, thus causing a crash on `onCreateView` .

    The Fragment creation is very simple. I use `fragmentManager.commit { replace(...)}` .

    How could it be?
What should I do? Will handling the destroying of the Fragment on `onDestroyView` fix it? Can I get this issue on other callback functions?
