This weekly thread is for the following purposes but is not limited to.

    1. Simple questions that don't warrant their own thread.
    2. Code reviews.
    3. Share and seek feedback on personal projects (closed source), articles, videos, etc. Rule 3 (promoting your apps without source code) and rule no 6 (self-promotion) are not applied to this thread.

Please check sidebar before posting for the wiki, our Discord, and Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Large code snippets don't read well on Reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

    Getting started with Jetpack Compose

    Posted: 11 Apr 2022 05:03 AM PDT

With its breakthrough approach in Android UI designing, uber-cool syntax and the fact that it brings Android development closer to web-designing(React) and iOS development(Swift UI), it is gaining popularity by the hour. For a while there, I had my apprehensions about it and didn't quite get the problem that Compose tried to solve. However, once I dipped my toes into it, I could indeed see the inherent issues that the Android world had always been clouded with and how Compose blows them away, opening up a world of possibilities and optimisations!

In this article, I have tried to cover all the basics that one might need while starting with Compose. If you are on that path, this article is all you need!

    Mocking data objects

    Posted: 11 Apr 2022 03:18 AM PDT

Hey guys, just a simple question, in my company when we are creating unit tests, sometimes for data classes in unit test we use some helper test functions like

    mockUser(username = "Test-user", name = "name")

Which basically creates the data class with the following fields.
But sometimes I saw that the data class is being mocked like

    val user = mock { every { username } returns "Test-user" every { name } returns "name" }

Which is your preffered method and why, what advantages/ disadvantages it has ?

    Google Maps Platform

    Hi Folks,

I wondering if anyone used google map mobile sdk recently, is daynamic map still free to use for mobile? because of new pricing model is confusing as shown in the picture that daynamic maps for mobile is paid unless we didn't use cloud styling.

    Thanks in advance

    Building signed APK failure

    Posted: 11 Apr 2022 12:00 AM PDT

I'm trying to build a release signed Android app bundle file for my android app but I keep getting a Failed to start monitoring R9JN502ET6J
    notification at the Event log.

Might I be inputting the wrong password for my .jks file ?

I have tried to invalidate caches and restart but still getting the same output at Event log.

Suggested global gradle.properties for Android dev

    Posted: 10 Apr 2022 06:56 PM PDT

I'm setting up a new MBP (32GB RAM) and don't want to just copy over my global gradle.properties from the old machine because that probably has some redundant stuff in it.

Is there a recommended gradle.properties skeleton file to begin with (things like caching, parallel building etc)?

Here is what my old machine (16GB) had:

    android.enableBuildCache = true org.gradle.jvmargs=-Xmx2048m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m org.gradle.daemon = true org.gradle.configureondemand = true org.gradle.parallel=true org.gradle.caching=true kotlin.incremental=true

Is the macro mode available for video?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2022 05:12 PM PDT

Is it possible to use the macro lens for capturing video? I tried to get the available cameras in camera2 api and got two options in my samsung galaxy f62 phone with macro lens, one was the primary camera and the other I believe is the wide angle lens.

WhatsApp (one device with flight mode) needs to update in 23 days

    Posted: 11 Apr 2022 01:36 AM PDT

I've kept my wife's WhatsApp on a backup phone and then put it in flight mode on 3 November 2021.

After that I re-installed WhatsApp on her regular phone for using WhatsApp. Since the backup phone was put in flight mode, the WhatsApp on that backup phone didn't wipe out when I installed WhatsApp on her regular phone.

I kept her WhatsApp on my backup phone for my own protection as it has proof that she has cheated on me & it'll be required in the court.

However, today when I opened the WhatsApp on my backup phone, it displayed the message saying, "WhatsApp needs to be updated in 23 days".

In 23 days, the backup device with her WhatsApp will complete 6 months in flight mode (3 Nov 2021 to 3 May 2022)

Please note that I cannot turn on internet on my backup phone as it'll wipe out the WhatsApp on the backup phone once it is connected to the internet. My wife's phone is with her and she's living in another city with her parents.

Will the WhatsApp on my backup phone get locked in 23 days? What is the solution to this problem?

What's the real benefit of using another language instead of Java for Android? It seems like other tools just lead to more possibility of breaking.

What's the real benefit of using another language instead of Java for Android? It seems like other tools, e.g. python-for-android, just lead to more possibility of breaking.
