5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 210)

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 07:21 AM PDT

This episode includes one of the best strategy RPGs on mobile, a fun incremental idle game, a popular arcade game, a story-driven incremental game, and an awesome bullet hell-like casual RPG.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 210 weeks ago here.

    Let's get to the games:

Ticket to Earth [Game Size: 811 MB] ($4.99)

Genre: RPG / Strategy - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review by AlexSem:

Ticket to Earth is a story-driven sci-fi tactical RPG in which we follow the adventures of our protagonists by fighting through a campaign full of turn-based battles separated by interesting cut-scenes.

The game features a unique fighting system where we take turns moving and attacking on a tile-based playing field. These tiles each have one of four colors, and we can only move along tiles of the same color. The further we move, the more our attack damage increases and special skills charge up, making it important to carefully identify the longest possible path that simultaneously positions us close to the enemies.

Combined with a variety of different skills and characters, this combat system creates deep, almost puzzle-like tactical possibilities for how to best deal with the enemies and accomplish all the secondary challenges.

Aside from the mandatory scripted battles, there are numerous optional missions that help us earn enough coins to purchase gear and skill upgrades, and as the story progresses, more characters with unique abilities also join our cause.

Despite its captivating narrative and pleasant visuals, the game is a bit slow-paced, with a lot of battles not affecting the story in any meaningful way. This may be a turn-off for some players.

Ticket to Earth is a $4.99 premium game without ads or iAP. Despite its somewhat narrow target audience, it will definitely appeal to RPG and puzzle fans, and anyone fond of quality mobile games in general.

Merge Mayor [Total Game Size: 298 MB] (Free)

Genre: Incremental / Idle - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review by NimbleThor:

Merge Mayor is a cute and relaxing offline-playable incremental game where we merge various items on a 7x9 grid board to complete missions that gradually expand and improve our town.

Each mission requires us to merge our way to specific items on the board, and they can be finished in any order. But what's really interesting is that the board itself is persistent across missions, which means we always start exactly where we left off.

Merge Mayor is really all about properly managing the space on our merge board, which I found quite enjoyable. This becomes especially apparent when resources like XP, energy, and premium currency occasionally start spawning when other items are merged. These resources can be merged to provide higher rewards, but they take up valuable space on the board, forcing us to make some interesting tactical decisions.

If the board becomes too empty, we tap various types of carts to spawn a new low-tier item, which costs a bit of energy that replenishes over time. The carts can also temporarily run out of items to spawn, forcing us to wait. This is essentially an energy system, and it's the most frustrating part of this otherwise fun game.

The colorful art-style and relaxing gameplay create a cute and calming atmosphere perfectly fit for the gameplay, and the progression is overall nicely paced.

Merge Mayor monetizes through iAPs for energy and resources that let us progress faster, and some incentivized ads. Thankfully, I never felt a strong need to watch ads or pay, but the game seems strictly made to be played in 10-15 minute intervals, and that's how I enjoyed it. There also isn't much challenge to the gameplay, which makes it a perfect casual game to play while watching TV.

Magic Survival [Game Size: 134 MB] (Free)

Genre: Arcade / Bullet Hell / RPG - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review by Erich Zann:

Magic Survival is a casual top-down shoot 'em up where we control a nameless protagonist with magical abilities and try to survive as long as possible while facing endless hordes of enemies.

Before each run, we choose between different stages and character classes, each of which uniquely impacts the gameplay experience. During a playthrough, we find different resources and level up to learn random new spells or upgrade existing ones – not too unlike the systems found in many Archero-likes. Lastly, we can spend currency earned through gameplay to permanently increase various passive bonuses through an upgrade system.

We control our character with a single joystick while an auto-shoot mechanism automatically fires away at enemies. This makes the game super intuitive and easy to play on all screen sizes, and although simple, the controls don't limit the depth of the gameplay in any way.

The art-style is extremely stylish, but certain particle effects and some of the environment design feels inconsistent with the rest of the game. This is not a deal-breaker, but it does slightly ruin the immersiveness.

Magic Survival monetizes through incentivized ads to revive once when dead, a $2.49 iAP to remove the ads, and a few others for more in-game currency. Fortunately, the monetization doesn't impact the free-to-play aspect of the game much as the in-game currency is easily collected through gameplay.

Overall, Magic Survival is a great game for anyone who loves shoot 'em ups with RPG and slight roguelite elements.

ALTER EGO [Game Size: 121 MB] (Free)

Genre: Incremental / Idle / Adventure / Story - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review by Sleepy Parrot:

Alter Ego is a unique incremental idle adventure game about self-discovery that truly took me by surprise.

The game has us start out by tapping speech bubbles that appear on the screen, called "whispers". This provides us with the game's currency, "Ego". Much like in most other incremental games, we can eventually automate the collection of Ego, which we do by buying and reading books.

Interestingly, the game references real books about philosophy and psychology, and every time we level up by reading enough pages, passages from these books appear on the screen.

Another use of Ego is to take personality tests with a character named Es, which gradually teaches us about ourself and the world in which we live. The answers we provide during these tests are ultimately used to determine which of the game's multiple endings we'll arrive at. These interactions with Es are where the game really starts to take off.

Alter Ego monetizes through a banner ad shown at the bottom of the screen during gameplay, and incentivized ads for some bonuses. A $2.99 iAP lets us remove these ads, while other iAPs up to $9.99 let us gather Ego faster or immediately unlock different endings to the story. Thankfully, these purchases are never forced on us, and they're not necessary to finish or enjoy the game.

All in all, this is a great hidden gem of a unique and creative idle game that I am confident anyone who enjoys story-driven games and incremental experiences will enjoy.

Crossy Road [Game Size: 255 MB] (Free)

Genre: Arcade / Casual - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review by Pete McD:

Crossy Road is a fun arcade game where our goal is to guide our character across endless roads, avoiding a never-ending flow of traffic – a gameplay loop heavily inspired by Konami's 1981 game "Frogger".

If we ponder our next move for too long, a bird swoops down and kills us, meaning we're forced to constantly move forward, and to make things even trickier, we also occasionally have to cross rivers by landing on lily pads or moving logs. The aim of the game is to simply get as far as we can.

We control our character by tapping to move forward and swiping left, right, or down to move in other directions. This simple control setup makes the game perfect for playing with one hand.

The 3D pixel art is deliberately retro and adds a lot to the playful atmosphere of the game. Where Crossy Roads really shines, however, is in its vast number of settings and avatars. Before you know it, you'll be playing as a T-rex in prehistoric times, a dancer in a Brazilian carnival, or even as a roll of toilet paper trying to dodge desk chairs and robot hoovers.

Themes and avatars can be instantly bought via iAPs, although free players also unlock them fairly quickly. In addition, there are forced ads that can be removed through a $0.99 purchase, and incentivized ads that allow us to earn coins and prizes faster.

Most rounds last less than a minute unless your reflexes are super sharp. This makes the game ideal for picking up and putting down at any time. The monetization is a bit chaotic, but it's not necessary to spend any money to enjoy the game as all the unlocks are purely cosmetic.

Overall, it's a great adaption of a classic arcade format, and it's a fun game to kill a few minutes with.

Looking for "Interactive story" or "adventure" games where the in-app purchases are one-time purchases of a story or part of it

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 09:56 AM PDT

A paid app is also okay as well if it's one you would recommend. Sci-fi and Mystery are my genres of choice.

There were other interactive story games I tried but so far all I've found is that you have to buy "tokens" to either play the game at all, or to make certain choices within the story. I just didn't know what to search for in the Google Play store for the in-app purchases being one-time unlocks.

The Top 10 Android Sports Games of 2022 (my research and predictions)

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 09:39 AM PDT

tl;dr 1 - The Sports genre on the mobile phone is one of the least exciting categories for me because they don't seem to pair as well as some of the other genres, but this year seems particularly exciting because of Rocket League Sideswipe and Roller Champions. There are also a few other exciting developments in this genre which was fun to research and learn about. Hope you guys enjoy. Here is my list for this years Top 10 Sports Games of 2022: Rocket League Sideswipe, Roller Champions, NBA 2K22 ARCADE EDITION, Race Master 3D, eFootball 2022 PES, Retro Bowl, FIE Swordplay, Hoop League Tactics, Mini Golf: Battle Royale, Bowling Crew (Extras: Last Years Games (new versions), Vive le Football & Pitch Clash, Basket Trio) (I give my reasons for choosing each one, so if one of these confuses you, make sure to read the post before raging 😂)

tl;dr 2 - I made all of this with game footage into a short HQ video here https://youtu.be/JJE8OXuvt6M

Update on the original video for those that care; it now has over 285k view in less than 11 weeks. I credit a lot of this success to Reddit and the feedback I have gotten from this community. So thank you! https://youtu.be/7-TakjaKy30

But for those of you who rather read, here is the video script:

With the recent release of Rocket League Sideswipe and Roller Champions on the way, this is going to be a big year for Mobile Sports games. Here are the top 10 mobile sports games of 2022!
The first and best mobile sports game of 2022 is Rocket League Sideswipe. For the same reason rocket league exploded 7 years ago, this game will do amazing this year. Psyonix has always prioritized the sport of their game above everything else and it shows up in everything they do. Smooth gameplay with minimal to no lag, fairness integrated throughout the maps and power ups and one of the least aggressive monetization systems found in all of mobile gaming. Even though Psyonix hired a different dev team to make this mobile version of their game, they clearly oversaw that it would match the original game in both quality and feel of the original title. I used to wonder if Psyonix's 7 year delay in making a mobile version would allow some of these mobile copycats to take the lead in the game type, but I wonder no more. The game is perfectly done and it is my number one recommendation for mobile sports games of 2022.

The second game on the list is Roller Champions. Made by Ubisoft, this game is going to be new to all platforms and I think it will perform the best on the phone. This sport is a new concept to gaming in which your team needs to keep possession of the ball for a full loop before making an attempt at scoring. During this process, each player has to utilize pulling and gliding at the right times to gain speed using the masterfully crafted physics put into the game. Defenders can steal the ball or even just knock people down while attackers can juke and eventually shoot the ball through a hoop. The game reminds me of an ancient Aztec game called Ulama which is believed to be the oldest continuously played sport in the world. It is a beautiful and addicting concept and I think the competitiveness of this game will capture our hearts today just as much as it did 3000 years ago.
The third game is NBA 2K22 ARCADE EDITION. Now sports games can sometimes just update the rosters of their games, fix a few bugs and then call it a new game with a new year number. And there isn't anything wrong with that. It is great that they are updating their games, but it doesn't make the new game special enough to mention. And while some of that is true of NBA 2K22 with no new game modes added this year, the gameplay of the game is much smoother and streamlined for the mobile platform. I am not sure if they hired some new devs to work on it or if they just figured it out themselves, but what used to feel like a PC port over to the phone, now feels like it is truly a mobile game. So if you like playing basketball games and want to play on your phone, this is a good year to get started.
The fourth game on the list is PES mobile 2022. Sadly, this game was postponed originally being slated to release 2 months ago, but Konami deemed the game unready and it is now scheduled for sometime around April of this year. And while this is sad because not being able to play the game obviously kills some of the hype for it, it is a testament to Konami that they are willing to postpone its release for the sake of quality even though it will cost them a lot of money. PES Mobile is the biggest traditional sports game on the mobile platform and it was listed as one of the main reasons the company made over $2 billion last year. So either the bugs were really bad or the devs are taking enough pride in their work to not be tempted to release it when it was scheduled to release. The game is bigger than FIFA Mobile because it has continued to deliver better gameplay which is to most people the most important thing about a sports game. From previews we can see that PES 2022 is going to have even better graphics and improved matchmaking for local and real-time online matches. As I mentioned in last year's video, I love how this game takes esports seriously and I think that is one of the main reasons so many have been attracted to it.

The fifth game is Hoop League Tactics which just came out and it is really well done. This game is very unconventional for a sports game because it is turn based, but in doing so, the devs were able to highlight the tactical side of sports or at least basketball. I actually really like this. By eliminating the surprise of something like a pick-and-roll, it highlights the tactic of the pick-and-roll. Instead of the normal focus on athletics, players are confined to the physics of the court and positioning their players so they can be the most effective. In this scenario, the most strategic mind always wins because they are not thwarted by skill, the unseen or the unexpected. So while I'm sure this game will not be for everyone, if you enjoy the strategy of sports, I would definitely recommend checking it out.

The sixth game on the list is Race Master 3D. This is obviously first a racing game and it will also be on that video, but instead of putting a ton of their focus on good looking cars or maps, the devs of this game seem to have focused on the sport of racing. The game has over 33 unique levels with a huge range of surfaces and obstacles. The game has a lot of good reviews and upgrading your car is satisfying. Now it doesn't have true multiplayer and it has a lot of ads so it is not my best recommendation, but it is a high quality new game which is why it is on this list.
The seventh game is FIE Swordplay. This game is not new, but it is truly amazing and because of that it still gets a bit of hype. FIE Swordplay has amazing game mechanics, but it also is strangely educational. All of the techniques used and the tournaments in the game are set up like actual professional fencing. So not only is the game fun, but you get to learn about actual fencing. And then once you get good at the mechanics in single-player, you can advance to playing against other players online. So while this game probably won't be that game that has you playing for hundreds of hours, I think this is the game that everyone should try because you will have a lot of fun for a few hours and then when you quit, you will leave with a greater understanding of how fencing works.

The eighth game on the list is Retro Bowl. This game is not as old as it looks and it is fantastically done. My favorite thing about this game is that you actually have to aim your pass and time it with the runner while avoiding getting sacked rather than the typical approach of having 4 buttons that correspond to different receivers on the field. And it's pretty fast paced too. So this little 8-bit game actually captures the feel of being a quarterback better than a lot of the best football games out there. The reason for this is because the game developers utilize the touch screen of the phone to capture an element of being a quarterback that no console or PC game has been able to do. I think this is absolutely fantastic and hopefully we will be seeing more game developers leaning into the strength of the mobile phone so that we can find more things like this and other types of games.

The ninth game is Mini Golf: Battle Royale. I personally was not so sure about minigolf on the phone, but these devs did an incredible job with this game. If you like the battle royale style and you also like physics type games, this is the best one out there. The game is legitimately competitive, there are so many maps with intriguing obstacles, and upgrading your gear is fun, but not such a big deal to make the game pay to win. That being said, some people are so much better at this game than me that it makes me wonder if eventually you can memorize the maps to get a big advantage.
The last game is Bowling Crew. This game is another physics based game and while less creativity can be afforded to bowling as can be to minigolf, this game did a great job of capturing the challenge of bowling. More importantly, the game focuses around PvP which both institutes the challenge of competition and the diversity of playing with someone new each match. Unfortunately, this game does give into many of the more typical gacha techniques prevalent in mobile gaming when it comes to upgrading your gear, but they are not so bad as to ruin fun of the game if you like this type of game.
Ok, so those are the top 10 Mobile Sports Games for 2022, but I do have 3 more honorable mentions for you.

The first one is actually not one game, but rather a suggestion to check out last year's top 10 video. Because a lot of sports games just update their roster some years, there were a few games that weren't worth mentioning because they didn't add anything new, but they are still some of the best sports games on the mobile platform.

The second honorable mention is Vive le Football & Pitch Clash. These are two new mobile soccer games that hold a lot of promise and are getting some hype, but ultimately, they just don't measure up to PES Mobile to make the list. The graphics are not as good and many of the players are dissatisfied with the repetitiveness of the commentary. That being said, these games offer quite different physics from PES mobile which could cause some players to prefer them.

The last honorable mention is Basket Trio. This game is not new and doesn't have nearly the graphics of NBA 2k22, but it hits a different niche that a lot of players like. I have noticed that this game continues to grow in popularity even though it is not made by a big game company which is almost always a great sign in mobile gaming.

Well, that's it guys. Hope that helps. If a game is not on here that you think should be on here, it is probably because I put it in a different genre like perhaps MOBA games or something else. Many of those videos are already out and the rest will be out very soon.

Alright guys, I'll see you next time.

If you use Samsung with Game Booster and you're now having trouble with in-app purchases it because of the "Priority" setting

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 07:57 PM PDT

I've been trying to solve this problem for almost 1 year now. The "Priority" setting in Samsung Game Booster makes it so it also disable in-app purchases in games, because it seems to kill Google Play Services in the background or keeps forcing it to shutdown.

The problem is, it is not so easy to spot at first glance and without much trial and error. Also, many times the "Priority" setting couldn't kill things in the background like Google Play Services so it was most of the time a hit and miss thing trying to spot the problem.

So today I restarted my phone and opened Duel Links, the in-app purchases were working and the "Priority" setting in Game Booster was on. After restarting the app, the in-app purchases were not working anymore, as if Game Booster managed to kill somethings in the background like Google Play Services in time.

Then I decided to read everything in the Game Booster settings and the "Priority" setting says something along the lines "It will also kill background apps to give better connection and CPU performance for your games", well I turned it off and in-app purchases were still not working, BUT, because I did not restart the game. Once I restarted Duel Links, in-app purchases were up again with "Priority" off. So if you turn it on, it will immediatly kill Google Play Services and thus disable in-app purchases, but if you turn it off while in-game, it will remain broken till you restart the app.

I had formated my phone, removed and added back my google play account, messed with my Google Payment settings, cleaned Data/cache from Google Play Store and Google Play Services, tried to fix my time and date, timezone, even blamed my SIM card carrier for "messing with date/time sync", but all was for nothing.

So yea, after 1 year frustated trying and giving up, the problem was Game Booster. Which is a cool app, allows you to easily record gameplays with somewhat good quality, but this sucks.

Samsung should add in the "i" (information icon) that "In-app purchases may not work while this setting is on". Would have spare so much of my time and frustation.

    I have a Samsung A10 with jan 1 2022 security patch.

Controller mount for LG V60 Dual Screen?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 08:03 PM PDT

I want a mount so I wouldn't have to buy a new controller and would be able to use my headphone jack. But I think the phone would be too top heavy and the lid on the back cover is too thin for mounting.

Anyone tried a controller mount on the LG V60 Dual Screen? The other solution would be to buy a telescopic controller.

Looking for a semi-old farming game. pls help.

I used to play this game around 2012-2014. I've been looking for this game all yesterday and all morning it's a farming game with soft colors and cut away scenes, I distinctly remember there being a little blonde girl who you play as. It moves in a story-telling like structure, it tells you about the little girl, her family, and why they're on the farm and you kind of grow up with her a little bit I only had the demo of this game so I could only play until a certain point and then you know I stopped 'cause I didn't have money to pay for it the rest of it. I remember at one point you meet this other boy and she like has a crush on him and I think they go to homecoming together or something like that. Gameplay wise you wouldn't cook necessarily you sort of "craft" food and sell it to the people who come by the farm mostly NPC's. It is a super fun game I don't remember the name I don't have a lot of details but if anyone can point me in the right direction or has anything I'd really appreciate it. I've looked through Reddit all day so it's not the other games that these others are playing like FarmVille or Alice Greenfingers. I don't remember the name at all I don't even remember what it's like the letter starts with and this is driving me NUTS.

Best co-op game to play with my 12yo cousin apart from the shooting genre (pubg/codm)

Hi, I am looking to play some casual/relaxing games with my cousin but couldn't really find anything. I am not 100% of the genre I am looking for but it should be simple maybe like the simulation type games. Open to free and paid. Looking for recommendations. Thank you.

Snapdragon 680 has a pretty high gpu clock rate ( Up to 1114 MHz ) but it usually runs at 600-785 MHz which makes genshin stutter a lot when moving

What's your most anticipated upcoming game release?

While I'm certainly interested in how Apex, Warzone and Valorant port over to android, I'm not particularly excited for them. I'm a bit more interested in Diablo Immortal, but again, not really excited for it. I am however excited if theres gonna be a new NFS true open world drop on Android potentially from leaked data. The one thing lacking on Android IMO. Thoughts?
