How often do you update dependencies?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:37 AM PST

How close to the latest release of dependencies and general tooling like gradle versions is everyone keeping? Do you update even if there is no immediate need for it? We have fallen behind a bit on gradle stuff and wondering if we should set some sort of goal when it comes to updating them.

    Problem with verifying app links

    Problem with verifying app links

Hi, I am trying to verify app links on Android 12 and I am experiencing some strange behavior.
I have declared couple of subdomains in manifest and double checked that every one of them contains Digital Asset Links JSON at proper location.

Problem is that randomly some of them are verified and some are not. Completely randomly whenever I invoke verification I get different results.

Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions?

Need up to date materials to help with my lack of understanding towards Fragments.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 03:27 AM PST

Hey all, new here and really wanting to understand Android Development.

Most things are going just fine but I get lost in fragments, where I am getting lost exactly is how to build a Nav Drawer or Floating Action Buttons in a fragment, I can't seem to find materials to build an understanding on it.

I learn better from video's rather than most reading but if reading is all that is available, that is fine. Does anyone have a good experience learning this section on Fragments and have any advice?
    Thank you for your help.

How to become "Pro" in Android Development?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:40 AM PST

So I have been doing android dev for more than a year (on and off). I taught myself android by referring to youtube, official documentation, and various codelabs and code samples available. Now, I feel I know things like Coroutines, threads, testing, NDK, MVVM, custom views, DI from the surface but I don't have in-depth knowledge because of which I struggle when it comes to advanced apps or some application-specific usages of the things mentioned. How can I learn about all the things mentioned above and more, in-depth?

Also, during some android dev interviews, I was rejected because I didn't have "production" experience. This is true because I have only worked on personal projects and simple open-source apps. So, how can I gain this production experience?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Any 'gotchas' about buying personal owned work/dev laptops (non mac) now a days for android + VMs/Docker?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 03:45 AM PST

I'm looking to buy a personal development laptop (I've been using desktop at home since covid) for the first time in years, and I'm considering the Inspiron 16 Plus Laptop for ~$1500, it runs intel cpu, nvidia GPU/32GB ram, and I'm wondering if there are any 'gotchas' I should know about before I pick between intel/amd CPUs, nvidia/amd GPUs, etc.

The reason I ask is b/c it (as far as I remember) used to be better to run linux on AMD cpus, but windows in intel cpus... or that was what I remember, b/c of haxm, or something like that (Honestly it has been so long that I kinda forget the specifics, so I might be completely wrong... but that's why I'm asking)

Also I'm going to be interested in running virtualbox and docker for back end test instances / random other security experiments (the reason for virtual box) and I ran into this before https://stackoverflow.com/questions/59735840/running-android-emulator-together-with-a-virtualbox-machine and was wondering if that is still an issue to not run them together at the same time with android emulator.

I'm also looking to run Windows and maybe linux as my OS(s) (I have an imac if I need for learning ios), so if anyone has a recommendation for a high value laptop (both performance and build quality) for 1000~1500-ish price range, I'd love to know. ~Thanks.

Using SharedPreferences to store user coins

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 12:24 AM PST

I'm wondering how safe is it to store something like user coins using SP?

Can someone with a rooted phone change that value? I also plan to store some other data there but it is very important to me that that data can't be changed with a rooted phone for example, because based on that data user will be able(or not) to use some app features.

At the moment I fetch that data from my server but I would like to have that data much faster and not wait for it a few seconds.

    Thank you

Can I use a real SIM card with emulated/virtualized Android?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 12:01 PM PST

Is it possible to use the information from a valid SIM card to connect an instance of the Android emulator or an Android-x86 virtual machine to a mobile network? Or, is it possible to pass-through a SIM card reader?

Considering the demand, should I learn Java over Kotlin?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 05:44 PM PST

I want to learn mobile dev (it appeals to me more than other forms of programming). However, just from casual research, I can tell the demand for Java positions is way more than Kotlin.

If my end goal is to learn a language in order to be a Jr dev and join the industry, which one should I learn?

    Automating UI development on Android

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 10:10 AM PST

I've been looking into automating layers of Android development and UI seemed to a good place to start. What do you guys think about a tool that takes in your design and spits out all your UI code, necessary unit tests etc. It could even allow you to make some backend calls. Would that be of interest ?

You can try out a Figma plugin I wrote to start off with UI components at https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1063494652261429841

benchmarks and managed code vs unmanaged code

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 09:40 AM PST

alot of benchmarks are thrown around on mobile. but since ios uses obj-c and swift unmanaged languages, and android uses kotlin/java mostly managed languages, what sort of over head would there be anyone know? or do the benchmarks account for it?
