Set up a simple external notification light for an Android device, great for elderly people

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 05:45 AM PST

TLDR: if you already have some at home, Philips Hue can be used as a practical notification lamp

My mom likes her tablet, but finds it a chore to always have to check for notifications - she manages an airbnb, so fast reaction is often needed

    • she's not around the device often, so sounds don't make much sense
    • always on display is also not good, eats battery on cheaper devices (no OLED), you still need to get physically close, especially when the display lays flat, and you can't use a cover case that is useful if you have kids playing around

So I thought it would be awesome to have a notification light/lamp that would clearly show when there is something to check. I thought this is so much of an obvious idea that there surely is already a product - but there isn't any, except legacy low-volume products like Notti/Dotti lights.

Then it struck me that this could be easily done via regular smart bulbs, and well I actually have Hue lights at home :v If you don't, the Hue bulb is cheap (any will do, like a $15 white, but colored ones can be set up for colors per app!) but you'll need a Hue router as well, and that being $60 this isn't the cheapest setup.

It's kinda straightforward from this point on:

    IFTT way (simple but limited)

    • Download IFTT and the Philips Hue app
    • In IFTT select Android device -> Notification received
    • On the "then" side connect the Hue app to set up the light on
    • If choosing this solution, there is no way to automatically turn off the light when notification is removed, so you have to do this manually, maybe with a (Hue) dimmer switch. (see below for the solution)

Tasker way (more complicated but more flexible)

    You need these apps:

    • Tasker ($3.5)
    • Hue Pro ($2) + Hue Pro Tasker (free version) OR just AutoHue (note: no longer maintained)

    Steps:

    • set up the bulb in Hue Pro (if not using AutoHue)
    • set up a Tasker rule to turn on/off the lamp on a notification (any, or from specific app)
    • set up two profiles, via menu Event/"Notification" (turn on on notification from any or selected apps) and "Notification removed" (to turn lamp off, on any removal of notifications).
    • on the task end, the Hue Pro Tasker/AutoHue provides a task that can control the bulb, search for "Hue"
    • evidently 2 tasks are needed here as well: one to turn on and one to turn off the light

There is surely a cheaper - but probably not a simpler - way to achieve this without Hue (router) either via a more standalone smart lights (like Lifx) or some RPi-based home automation kit. But since Hue is widely available, I think this above is a viable way for a lot of people.

What big breakthroughs, if any, could be on the horizon in near future?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2021 02:34 PM PST

i havn't bought a new phone for 5 years and now I'm in a cycle of expecting more from any phone i may buy, and feeling that it's not enough of an upgrade for the things i care about despite how old my current phone is; and then It's been even longer since I've upgraded and now my expectations are even higher... and so on.

The one feature I'm eyeing is notch/hole-less display but i'm fearing that may be too premium of a feature for a phone to still have a headphone jack.

Another feature, if it's even possible, is a phone with a battery of at least 5000mAH but not a chonker (<160g).

What features are potentially in the works right now? What features are you wishing for, possible or not?

Force custom colors for Material You

    Posted: 21 Nov 2021 02:00 PM PST

I found a non-root way to force different colors other than the wallpaper colors. If this is not allowed here, sorry.

    Install this app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lb.lwp_plus

In the app, I used these settings.

    Wallpaper type: Cropped image.

Select your image. Hit the crop icon top right to set it. Ya, that's odd.

    Background color: Black.

Toggle custom colors to on. Pick the colors you want to use. Material You will use these colors instead of the ones from your wallpaper.

Go to Wallpapers and Styles and the options should have the colors you selected.

Turn screen off then back on.

I choose a wallpaper here for an example that has none of the colors that material you are using. Colors picked in the app.

I have no idea what battery life is with the app. But it shouldn't be that bad I hope. Bonus is that it has a double tap to lock screen function too. Another bonus I just noticed is it gets rid of that stupid zoom animation on the wallpaper.

My pixel 3 finally updated to Android 12 and I miss the old features.

    • I used to control chromecast volume with my volume controls now I have to reopen the app, open the volume and use a slider tool.

    • I can't skim through my app library by swiping up

    • weirdly the most irritating is that apps Ive put in grouped folders now overflow from the white circle

Android 12 media experience is a mess

    Posted: 21 Nov 2021 04:22 AM PST

After being in the beta and having no issues, it was a surprise to see so many bugs just from the media side of things in Android 12. This is a list of bugs I deal with daily:

    1. Switching media sources doesn't always stop the previous source, resulting in both audio sources playing at the same time.
    2. Audio will just cut out randomly and not come back, I either have to force close the app or restart my phone for it to work again.
    3. YouTube videos will pause at the end of each scene for a few seconds then continue playing until the end of the scene. Closing the app fixes the problem but then the video will start playing again by itself (can be a few seconds all the way to a few minutes later).
    4. YouTube PIP often will display the full YouTube app in the PIP box rather than just the video. It also leaves a vertical shadow in the shape of an app running in portrait mode.
