Pikmin Bloom made my System go mayhem

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 12:14 AM PST

I installed the game just to try it out and gave it the permissions it needed. It has background location tracking like Pokemon Go, which I also granted. Played it for about 20 mins and already forgot about it.

And since then several things just straight out didn't work anymore:

    • Notifications from Signal and other apps didn't arrive until I opened the app
    • Play Store would not update apps when I click on Update All
    • Android Auto (Wireless) didn't start anymore
    • In general weird glitches across the system
    • The app took a huge amount of battery while not even using (unlike Pokemon Go which also has background tracking)

Yesterday I finally found the culprit thanks to this comment.

I have a Pixel 5 updated to Android 12. I don't know if it is an Pixel or Android 12 or Pikmin Bloom specific issue, but as soon as I uninstalled it, everything went good again.

Still insane how a simple app can break your phone that much.

Shower thought: people who thought the iris scanners on phones were dumb didn't anticipate everyone having to wear masks and gloves everywhere in the cold.
