Pixel 6 haptics may finally be on par with the iPhone

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 05:46 PM PDT

So this is a tweet from Quinn Nelson, of Snazzy Labs on YouTube, and he and others think the Pixel 6 vibration motor is pretty close to that of the latest iPhone. Coming from Quinn, a vehement haptics critic, this is great news for people that place a lot of emphasis on the quality of the vibration motor.

    Android 12 Whitespace / Padding / Customizations

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 10:31 AM PDT

Had my phone glitch earlier this morning and ended up with this which made me realize how badly Material You needs some additional customization options to really complete the overhaul. The spacing in the nav drawer area is so overboard it feels like a complete waste of real estate that when it bugs out I was pleasantly surprised. Overall I'm enjoying the design change for the most part with the consistent color theming across my phone but finding certain areas are just absolutely wastes of space. Notifications on the lock screen now only show one or two items at most without expanding the screen to specifically read all in the list. What is the general consensus here? What areas would you like to see tweaked to make Material You a little more comfortable for you?

PSA: The shortcut to dial 911 is 3 more clicks than the shortcut to open the camera

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 10:55 AM PDT

I updated to android 12 yesterday. Today I tried to use the 2 clicks of the power button to open the camera, but I didn't think I quite hit it, so I tapped it a few more times (I thought 2, but I guess 3)....not infrequent to do because sometimes I'll do the double tap but hit it a 3rd time and kill the screen. anyway. You have 5 seconds to cancel a call to 911 if you tap it 5 times.

How to use fabricated overlays to customize the colors ion Android 12 to whatever you want (instead of the pastel dark mode colors)

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 11:22 AM PDT

    Just copy/pasting what I wrote in /r/Android_Beta.

What are fabricated overlays? TL;DR: Changing basic system level settings, mainly for theming and layout.

After seeing someone else's comment (/u/Hig13) in the post about the easter egg "paint chips" widget, I decided to look into how to do that myself. After spending about an hour setting everything up (and getting some crucial info on where to change certain settings), I finally found and understood exactly how to change what I needed to change.

Step 1: Install and set up Shizuku.

Launch the app, and scroll down to wireless debugging. Choose to pair it with your phone, and follow the instructions.

It'll have you go into the developer settings and enable wireless USB debugging, then pair your phone with the app while using split screen (which can be a little finicky in smaller screens).

Once the two are paired, go back into Shizuku and choose to start option.

Step 2: Install the Fabricate Overlay App

Scroll to the bottom of the page under releases, and click the build number (currently 1.0.2), then download the APK under the assets tab near the bottom.

Launch the app with Shizuku still running, and it should ask for some permissions. Grant them, and you're all set for now. You may need to launch Shizuku any time you want to change settings in the future if it closes out.

Step 3: Find and change the colors you wish to change.

To make this step a little easier, it might be worth activating the Android 12 Easter egg, and enabling the paint chip widget. The reason for this is that you can have a much easier time finding which settings to change for the things you're wanting to change. Example: for me, most accent colors use "A1-100" on dark mode. Remember that A=Accent, N=Neutral.

In order to change any given color, open the Fabricate Overlay app, and press the add overlay button. Look for the "Android System" and choose it. Press add, and look for the setting that's the color you want to change. In my example, my color was A1-100, so if you search "Accent1", you'll find a list of settings including "android:color/system_accent1_100". Just choose whichever one you're looking for and type out the hexadecimal color code for what you want to change it to.

Once you've changed the settings you'd like to change, just save the settings, then enable the overlay you made. Sadly, there's no way to edit or change what you've set without searching for the app and settings again.

So far, in dark mode at least, I've found:

A1-100: UI accents (sliders, quick settings, Gboard themed colors, and themed icon colors)

A1-200: Play/start buttons in the clock app

A2-300: Sent messages in a non RCS chat, number and symbol bottom on Gboard

N1-800: Background on volume popout, "buttons" on Gboard, Notification card background.

Android 12's new Extra Dim feature can be automated with Tasker

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 08:26 AM PDT

As we know, Android 12 comes with a new feature called Extra Dim, that reduces screen brightness below normal thresholds. This can be very useful for reducing eye strain at night, but for some reason, Google did not think to make this work on a schedule or automate it in any way. Fortunately, this can be done with Tasker, so I decided to share my profile here in case anyone else wants it.

Obviously, you will need the Tasker app to do this. Furthermore, in requires changing one of Android's secure settings, so you will need to give Tasker permission to do so. This does not require root, but you do need to download Google's platform tools so you can use ADB. You can find the instructions to do that here. Per that link, there apparently is now a separate tool which makes this easier, but I have not tried it.

If you have Tasker and have granted it access to secure settings, you can simply use the "custom settings" task to toggle the "reduce_bright_colors_activated" secure setting and trigger it however you would like. If you're familiar with Tasker, that's not very difficult. That being said, here is an export of my Tasker profile for this. It toggles Extra Dim depending on whether Night Light is on since that feature can be scheduled in Android and I figure that when I want one, I will always want the other, even if I toggle Night Light manually.

I hope someone finds this useful. Google should probably allow this to be scheduled or automated, but in the meantime, Tasker comes to the rescue, as usual.

EDIT: You can also change the level of dimming in the Android accessibility settings, which is controlled by the reduce_bright_colors_level secure setting in Tasker, but I have not manipulated this in my profile.

Why aren't there as many PRO apps on Android like there’s on iOS?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2021 07:03 AM PDT

Here's a bit of context, I moved to Apple's ecosystem very recently after using Android as my primary OS for about 7 years. I work as a video editor and I started integrating my iPad into my workflow with LumaFusion, it works great for what I need. My previous attempt at doing this was with a Galaxy Tab S4 back in 2019 and it didn't work out, ended up selling the tablet just a few months later.

So this got me thinking, Android nowadays is more robust and versatile than iOS, the system lets you do much more with your phone or tablet, but why doesn't Android have as many Pro apps as iOS does?

Android has huge omissions like LumaFusion, Procreate, Affinity Designer and even Photoshop. In theory, these apps would work great on Android, the hardware is there for it and the OS would be capable of handling them like a desktop environment would (specially with something like Samsung Dex), but with Android you're stuck with poor offerings.

Android 12 is beautiful save the "smoosh" feature at end of scroll.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2021 09:08 PM PDT

First off Android 12 is stunning. Google has taken a great leap from square and boxy to round and pleasant. From the big circular icons that pop up when I am typing, to the new bold and large (and rounder) drop-down menu, Google hit a home run here.

The volume controls on keypress are bigger and more round too, it's like Google has come ahem full circle in feature implementation.

There is a singular daunting feature, however, that is throwing me off quite a bit. When you scroll to the end of the page, Android 12 gives a "smoosh/squish/compressed" animation to the text on the screen. Not only is this jarring but it's also very difficult for me to even watch in motion without a physical reaction.

All in all great work Android 12, just wish I could remove this smoosh scroll feature somehow!
