3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 193)

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 04:18 AM PDT

Here we go again, my friends :) This is the latest edition of my weekly recommendations based on the most interesting games I played this week, and I hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes an incredibly unique game that mixes open-world RPG gameplay with real-time card-based combat, a fun text-based MMORPG with a solid core gameplay loop, and one of the most interesting PvPvE games I've ever played on mobile.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 193 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Requia Online [Game Size: 675 MB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Card / Real-time / Open-world / Indie - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Requia Online is an incredibly unique single and multiplayer trading card RPG with real-time card-based battles and a large open world full of creatures and resources to explore.

The core gameplay has us fight monsters and complete quests across a large 2D MMO world. During combat, cards are continuously pulled from our deck and placed in front of us, with room for a total of seven cards. To attack, we simply move cards to our opponent, and since combat is real-time, the opponent constantly attacks us too, forcing us to strategize on the fly and act quickly to gain the upper hand.

The depth of strategy throughout Requia is what truly blew me away. Not only is it vital to strategize which cards to include in our deck, but also when to use them. For example, a card that stuns an enemy should be used just before the opponent hits us with a strong attack. Most cards also require energy, which we gain by first playing energy cards, adding yet another layer of strategy. To top it all off, there are over 600 cards to either use during combat or equip to increase core stats.

The game also features real-time PvP, co-op PvE battles, crafting, MMO-style open-world bosses that occasionally appear on the map, and even a system that makes the resources available throughout the world dependent on all players' distribution of labor points across various mines and gathering areas. Interestingly, we can also buy and sell cards to and from other players on an auction house, or directly trade them with people we meet in real life.

Requia Online monetizes through iAPs for a premium currency also earned via events and PvP. Since equipment cards can only be acquired through gameplay and ability cards are easily earned for free, the advantage of paying players is relatively small.

The game's main downside is that its great depth makes it difficult to get into as a new player. For those ready to dedicate the required time, however, Requia offers a one-of-a-kind experience perfect for fans of strategy, RPG, and card games.

Lost Vault [Total Game Size: 135 MB] (free)

Genre: Text-based / RPG (with MMO elements) / resource optimization / indie - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Lost Vault is a great post-apocalyptic fantasy MMORPG that mixes active RPG and social elements with semi-idle resource optimization for a unique experience built for brief play-sessions.

The core gameplay has us defeat monsters throughout the wasteland to gain XP, cash, and an insane amount of loot with unique attributes. Once we initiate a battle, the fight unfolds automatically, which means the game is all about optimizing our equipped loot and core attributes.

Between matches, we can chat with other players, join a guild, fight mini-bosses, upgrade our equipment through crafting, participate in guild activities, defeat other players' characters in non-real-time PvP, and even upgrade our headquarter and buildings to receive additional idle resources.

Where the game truly shines is in its customization that allows us full control over how we develop our character's strength, agility, intelligence, endurance, and luck attributes. This freedom means we can create any build imaginable by spending in-game cash to upgrade our preferred attributes.

Since fighting monsters consumes water that replenishes twice per day, the game is made to be played for 10-15 minutes at a time. Some might not enjoy the limited play-session length, but on the bright side, it means the game is not grind-heavy and time-consuming, which makes it more approachable for casual RPG players.

Lost Vault monetizes through a one-time $19.99 purchase that provides minor advantages, such as 5% more XP and cash, and iAPs for a premium currency. This currency can be used to launch a guild or participate in more PvP matches, but since it is also earned through gameplay and cannot be used to buy water, it doesn't provide a meaningful pay-to-win advantage.

As one of the most unique text-based MMORPGs on mobile, its addictive gameplay loop makes it well worth a try for fans of the genre.

Knight's Edge [Game Size: 442 MB] (free)

Genre: Action / 3v3 Brawler - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Knight's Edge is a fun fast-paced 3v3 PvPvE brawler where we rush to defeat three rooms of monsters and bosses before our opposing team does. The brilliantly chaotic twist that truly sets the game apart is that we can use teleporters to get to the opponent's dungeon and attack them to ruin their run too.

The Archero-inspired combat system means normal attacks are used automatically when we stand still while abilities are used manually. The first team to defeat their last boss wins the game. The bosses and monsters all have unique behaviors and attack patterns, and mixed with opponents spawning to mess with us, this creates an awesome gameplay experience.

Every monster killed provides a bit of XP, and when leveling up, we get to pick between two random upgrades from a pool of potential upgrades that depend on the weapon we've got equipped. There's a good amount of different weapon types with distinct abilities to match any play-style. These weapons are upgraded using gold gathered through gameplay and weapon duplicates gained via a progression road and free and paid battle passes.

The controls are okay, but I often found myself leap-dodging when I didn't intend to. Additionally, team-members going AFK caused some frustration as they aren't replaced by AI. Lastly, the matchmaking needs improvement as we're often matched with higher-level players, although I think this will fix itself if the game attracts more players.

Knight's Edge monetizes through iAPs for vanity cosmetics and loot boxes to unlock and level up weapons faster. This does give paying players a pay-to-progress-faster advantage.

Most importantly, the game is just super fun, and as a perfect mix of PvP and PvE, it is worth checking out for any fan of brawlers or Archero-like experiences.

    Controller Reccomendation for Tablet Gaming

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 03:40 PM PDT

Looking to see if there are any good recommendations for tablet gaming, won't need a thing where phone can clip in. Will be mostly game streaming with occasional emulators.

I have tried the standard Xbox one controller and it seemed to work well. I also tried the Xbox Elite 2 controller which is an amazing controller, but it has some bad Bluetooth issues. It connects and works just fine on the tablet if there is no other Bluetooth devices connected to it, however if I try to use Bluetooth headphones as well, it just disconnects and reconnects every few seconds. It would be nice if there was another controller option like the Elite's that dont have the connection issue.

Simple Auto Battler: Super Auto Pets

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 03:52 AM PDT

I didn't see any posts about this game here, so I made one. Super Auto Pets is a fun and simple auto battle game, which is perfect for playing mobile. While it's easy to understand, it's fun to play around and find good synergies. I saw it on northernlions videos and found it on the playstore later. It's well received on steam and the playstore, if you like autobattlers, give it a go, it's free to play.

You can buy other animals, but with bought animal packs you only play against other people who bought the same packs. So no pay2win.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 07:34 PM PDT

Looking to dial in some game settings on a couple games and would love a way to see what kind of fps I'm getting with different settings. Are there are good free options out there? Not apposed to paid, if it's reasonable and well reviewed.

    [REQUEST] Best flight sim?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 08:50 AM PDT

I've been having fun with SimplePlanes, but I've wanted another flight sim for a while. I dabbled in Flight Pilot for a while, but the graphics were a bit suboptimal and the sandbox too repetitive. I want a realistic damage model and real planes, combat preferably but not required, and multiplayer would be nice too.

    A game I can't remember

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 04:04 AM PDT

Back around maybe 2015 when I was still 15 years old, I would always play a game called "Oh my heroes" which featured like 5 classes and 2 premium classes called Hercules and the Ninja.

There was another game however that I invested a lot of time into, it was a sort of "map story" gameplay with the same sort of character design. The meta was two healers and two fireball casters. You met team members on the map at random.

I don't know what app it's called, but I would like to revisit some nostalgia. If anyone can help, I'd truly appreciate it.

Collaboration in making a Mobile Game?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 07:50 AM PDT

I have a great concept for a high fantasy game with a filing cabinet full of concepts, backgrounds, genealogies, histories, maps, etc (probably about 1200 or so pages). As I did my research at university I concurrently ran an 8 person Wargaming group with the help of my wife, who ended up saving every little scrap, every little idea.

I have a working concept of the game layout and a full fledged story spanning 4 different continents and 3 different generations of conflict

Problem is ... I have an MA in European History and know next to nothing about coding and all that jazz

Any ideas as to how I should go about bringing this to fruition ?

Did you try apps that boosts your mental well-being?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Did you try apps that boosts your mental well-being?

I recently joined Healing Habits a registered non-profit organization and since then I have been helping them get the word out as a way to give back to the community. I never before played games that boosts your mental well-being, so I was a positively surprised that this app actually helped me feel better and more confident talking to other people.

Healing Habits made a free app for people with depression or anxiety called GameFace which teaches you to look for the happiest person in a crowd of other emotive faces. By doing this repeatedly and as quickly as possible, it will aid the training of an automatic response that is looking for acceptance and ignoring rejection.

It's available on PC, ios, and android with absolutely no charge and no data collected: https://happygameface.com/

    Android: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/gameface-happy/id1576905051

    Apple: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jack.gameface

We hope to reach as many people as possible and make a positive impact on their mental health.

Hope you can share your thoughts about it!
