    Weekly Questions Thread - October 12, 2021

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 06:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Google Play is starting flagging apps that don't comply with their latest metadata policy update

Google Play is starting flagging apps that don't comply with their latest metadata policy update

Google Play is finally limiting the app title listed in the Google Play Store to 30 characters.

It is also reporting app with app title with incentives around store performance. So keywords for performance such as "top" or "best" and keywords for deals such as "free" or "sale

Android Studio - Arctic Fox | 2020.3.1 Patch 3 now available

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 04:58 PM PDT

First attempt at Android dev. Running Android Studio on Linux. Starting any emulator crashes the first few times, then causes my entire computer to freeze, and I need to do a hard reboot. Help?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 08:08 AM PDT

    Hi!

Whenever I try to run the default kotlin app (following the tutorial), the emulator tries to open, but crashes with the following message while still on the white Google screen:

The emulator process for AVD Pixel_3_API_30 has terminated.

There are no extra details in the logs, as far as I can tell.

If I try again, I either get the same behaviour, or my entire computer freezes. The clock stops ticking, the mouse stops moving, and my keyboard stops responding. Videos in the background loop the last half second or so. I can only recovery by using a hard reboot.

As the title says, this is my first time trying out Android development. I'm running Android Studio (2020.3.1 patch 3) on Manjaro Linux. I have about 700 GB free. I do not have HAXM as an option, nor do I have the option of changing the graphics to anything other than Automatic.

Apart from that, I have tried:

    • Installing from AUR, Snap, and Flatpak
    • Using it with or without KVM
    • Uninstalling and reinstalling different versions in the SDK manager
    • Deleting and remaking them in the AVD manager
    • Trying different Android and API versions
    • Running separately or in a tool window

What am I missing, or what else should I try? What might be a possible cause, and what could I do to fix it?

Broken screen and no debugging mode enabled

    Posted: 12 Oct 2021 07:03 AM PDT

I have vivo y81 model 1808 with screen broken. I try to backup my phone using PC software but it requires mobile to be unlocked. I tried first solution that came up on googling "ADB services" to unlock phone but it require debugging mode to be enabled. And i think my phone doesn't support otg either. Is there any other option to unlock without wiping or resetting phone? Please.

When is the 30 character limit on app names starting?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 08:50 PM PDT

Basically what the title asks and also, is this just for the Play Store console title or also for the name used on the apk itself?

    Thanks.

Building apps and signing using cli/scripts, i.e. not Android Studio?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 11:04 PM PDT

I have some Android apps I've written in Java using plain ant for the build.

But now it seems like everything is depending upon Android Studio (AS). Even the command line tool has to be invoked from AS. Also if using the gradle wrapper the project has to be created in AS to create the ./gradlew wrapper.

The APK and signing procedure consist of manual steps and even assembling the URL when using AAPT2. This seems so error prone and not suited for continuous integration and automatic build and test .

Are there any references and examples other than the below link for building apps from scripts/cli?

Risk to Google accounts for a new dev

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 02:59 PM PDT

Over the past year I've been working on my first app I intend to publish. I've gotten to the point where I think I can't proceed without a dev account. (It's a niche calculator app, all functionality is integrated except the play billing library)

I have a new Google account setup specifically for this. I also have a personal account (heavily tied to my wife's and 3 kids), and a work account that is used to manage workspace for myself and 3 other employees and hosting our webpage. We use these services extensively. (I'm not overly qualified, and it's not in my job description, but I'm the go-to IT guy)

I've started a Google takeout for all my personal information (mainly photos and some app scripts) just to be safe, but it's a pain for me to do with a slower internet connection and cannot be done on a regular basis. Finding a way to backup everything necessary in the event of a Google termination and not interrupt my life or work too much is proving difficult.

My main concern is about Google terminating my dev account (I've tried to make the app as close to what Google recommends as possible, but I'm new so I don't know if I've done something dumb and screwed myself). I also don't want to be caught 'riding the wave' of bans because of something I didn't intend to do.

Am I being overly cautious? I don't want to risk my data, or the ability to use Google's services. But I've read some horrifying stories from others online. How rare are those cases? How badly do you need to screw up to get terminated? Is the appeal process really that hard to deal with as a small dev? Any input would be appreciated. It's been hard to find good I formation about this topic that isn't biased. Thanks.

In App Update behavior for staged rollout app update

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 07:33 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I have a question regarding In-App-update https://developer.android.com/guide/playcore/in-app-updates. Do users get asked to update (Immediate Mode) when they are part of staged rollout of next version update? For ex: if all users have an App version 1.1 that supports In_App_Update. Some of the user are part of 1.2 staged rollout. when they open the app will they be asked to update to 1.2 following In_App_Update UX flow ?

Does anyone know how to replicate the concept of AVG alarm clock extreme night light mode

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 01:20 PM PDT

Hi felow android devs. In case you are not familiar with the app, it is a bit more advance alarm clock and it has this feature called night clock. What this feature does is that in will used the properties of oled display to display black with turned off display and it will keep some parts of the display permanently on with clock, weather and your next alarm. I think the always on display is a great concept and I would like to try implement some ideas I have with this tech, although I don't know how to do this. Does the android API has some predefined way how to utilize this concept or did the programmer from AVG write everything themselves and override screen timer and other things like that manually.

I know that its kind of a strech, but In case you have any information about this topic, sharing them and having a discussion will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks Reddit

What could be causing these absolutely bizarre Bluetooth issues?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 07:51 PM PDT

    Details-

Phone: OnePlus 8 pro. Occurs with: any Bluetooth headphones. Problem: started about a month ago. What happens is, while using ANY Bluetooth headphone, whatever music/video I am listening to will just pause, and at the same time, whatever Bluetooth headphones are connected will act like they disconnected (but I still see that the phone recognizes the Bluetooth headphones are still available to be paired in the volume menu and status bar). It's like the music or videos will be playing for 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes, and then disconnect without warning, and whatever media that was playing will pause, and then after that, it is impossible to get a connection for more than 1 minute or so with the headphones, even after restarting the phone. ALSO - after this problem starts, sometimes, when I increase the volume, I see that my phone raises the volume for the call mode (???) even though I have the headphones connected. Its like it thinks I'm on a call or something.

I have already tried- - factory resetting the phone (the problem was gone for about a week and then came back yesterday, now the longest time I am able to listen to anything with Bluetooth headphones before disconnecting is about 1 minute) - clearing the cache of Bluetooth - Forgetting the Bluetooth headphones and repairing them - factory resetting the Bluetooth headphones themselves - Listening in safe mode - The problem does NOT happen in safe mode, all Bluetooth headphones work perfectly, so this must be a software problem.

Important things to note- There were two apps that I thought MIGHT be the culprit of the problem, and I uninstalled them, and the weirdest thing happened after they were uninstalled - basically, spotify was playing in the background while I uninstalled these two apps, and the Spotify music was NOT playing through the headphones (since it had disconnected because of the problem), and IMMEDIATELY after I had uninstalled both of these two apps, the sound came back through the headphones, but only for a minute, and then disconnected again.

I'm at my absolute whit's end with this problem. Any help at all is appreciated. Thanks

    A10 Gesture Compatibility

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 03:26 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am wondering if Android 10 Gesture Compatibility will ever become a requirement for app updates.

    https://developer.android.com/training/gestures/gesturenav

There are many apps out there that would do well to implement this and I'm just wondering if there are any plans to require it. That white/black bar around the gesture line is a real annoyance.

    Thanks,

    J

So thoughts on the Sony Xperia 10III. I have it coming tomorrow for £32 per month which includes 25gb data and everything else is unlimited and Spotify. I used to have a Sony z1 and just wondering if this is a good new choice?
