Cards & passes should be separate from Google Pay and be available to everyone Posted: 16 Sep 2021 05:22 AM PDT Especially in these times, showing a QR code on your phone should be easy and quickly accessible, right? Loyalty cards, cinema tickets, COVID vaccination proof etc."Well just use the cards and passes section in your power menu/on your lockscreen" people say. But, if you're, like me, living in Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, or Romania, you're out of luck! (https://support.google.com/pay/answer/9686224?hl=en)Even though Google Pay is available in most of those countries, the Cards and Passes somehow aren't. Google gives absolutely no reason for this, similar to Google Pay not working on Wear OS in certain countries. Now, for payment apps, I understand if it doesn't get released in all countries due to bank support, etc. (Although, the Wear OS limitation is still completely bonkers) but we're talking about being able to show a barcode on your screen...While there are apps like Stocard, where you can store some of your cards, no third-party apps have the ability to be as well integrated into your system as Google Pay. In my opinion, this is Google pushing their own apps too strongly into the Android system.Having the Cards and Passes as a separate (system) app would solve this monopolistic behavior. Google Pay could still provide vouchers and cards for the app, the system integration could be perfect and also usable for people who want to use their own bank's payment app instead of Google Pay. What is your opinion on the topic? Edit: So apparently, apps can implement the QuickAccessWalletService, but I don't know of any other app that can do this, aside from Google Pay. Plus, if an app implements this, it must also be your default payment app to function. So let me rephrase my statement: The cards and passes section should be separate from the default payment app. [link] [comments] | ||
