    Weekly Questions Thread - August 31, 2021

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

    Android architecture components discussion

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:33 AM PDT

Hey all, quick question from someone who's been out of the android dev game for a few years and now returning to work on an old app. I remember android architecture components coming out, so I wanted to implement them not, but everything I see written about them is from pretty much 3 years ago. Do people still use this? Is it any good? Worth the refactoring?

    MacBook Pro performance

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:33 AM PDT

Is there anybody in the community running Android Studio on a new 13" M1 based MacBook with only 8GB of ram?

Reason for asking: I need to buy a new MacBook for Android development ASAP and the only hardware I can source in my area is a 13" M1 with 8GB of ram. I know typically people always insist on 16gb of ram, just wondering if that's still the case?

    Cheers

What events are fired when someone uses the camera app to take a photo?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:45 AM PDT

When the camera app is launched and a photo is taken (without any context), what events can I subscribe to to get notified that a new photo was taken?

    To clarify some more:

    1. User takes photo
    2. My app should be made aware of the photo
    3. My app performs object detection
    4. Notify user of object detected via notification

    Thanks for the help!

build.gradle: adding BuildConfig field dynamically using new Variant API

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:34 AM PDT

    Hey there,

with Android Gradle Plugin 7 Google provided a new way to access app variant using their new Variants Api.

I could not figure out how to add BuildConfig fields depending on the variant using this api. Can someone give a hint?

    androidComponents { onVariants(selector().withBuildType("release"), { it.buildConfigFields.put("MY_KEY", BuildConfigField("String", "\"$someSecretValue\"", null)) // not working it.addBuildConfigField("MY_KEY", "\"$someSecretValue\"", "key description") // not working }) }

    Any suggestion is highly appreciated!

Referral Tracking for Google Play Store

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 02:05 PM PDT

I'm looking to have a YouTube channel create a review video for my paid app. They're still new so rather than getting paid a flat free upfront, they wanted to go with a % of sales. Does someone have a handy guide for setting up referral tracking?

MyFitnessPal Question: how do they get nutritional data??

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:32 AM PDT

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here knows how to get their app to scan the barcode on food, and then have all the nutritional data brought up on their phone?

MyFitnessPal is on app on android that does just that. It's basically a calorie counting app, but something really cool about it is that you can scan just about any food there is with a barcode on it, and it will bring up all the nutritional data for it.

I'm trying to make an app that has that as one of its functions. Anyone know how it does that?

I'm very new to programming as well, just an fyi.

    Android Apps on Windows 11

    Posted: 30 Aug 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Hey! I've read that Windows 11 will be able to run Android Apps (https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/24/22548428/microsoft-windows-11-android-apps-support-amazon-store) . I have an iOS/MacOS app but I'd like to build Android and Windows clients but I'm wondering with Windows 11, if I can get by with just creating an Android app instead of building a dedicated app for both?

    A couple questions:

    1. Is this going to essentially an emulator like Android studio?
    2. Or will developers be able to create fully functional Windows applications from their Android apps with access to Windows functionality like keyboard shortcuts, Windows screenshotting, etc.)?

Please feel free to answer either or both questions. Thanks for your help.
