This years flagship Pixels may have under display Soli sensors

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 10:31 PM PDT

I think there's a definite chance that this year's Pixel will have an under the display Soli sensor.

For those not aware, the Soli is essentially "radar on a chip". it works by emitting electromagnetic waves and then analyzing what's reflected back at it. Soli is not a camera but it can accurately detect if a person is there (presence) see limb movement (large gestures) and detect finger/hand movement. So far Google has put an "uncovered" Soli sensor in The pixel 4 and under display Soli. sensors in the latest Nest thermostat and Nest hub.

Regarding the meat of the matter:

Earlier this year documentation was found showing that engineers at Google were trying to get OsloFeedback, the app Google uses to handle Soli gestures on Android, working on a Whitechapel powered device which they refered to as "P21".

At the time, this was seized on as confirmatory evidence that the 2021 pixel was going to be using a Whitechapel processor. What wasn't really talked about, interestingly enough, was that this evidence was uncovered in documentation explicitly related to the implementation of a Soli sensor.

Looking at renders for the 2021 Flagship Pixels, there doesn't seem to be the same sort of hole for a soli chip there was on the Pixel 4.However, We also know that Google already has figured out how to get under display soli sensors working with relative accuracy (see the new nest hub) so it's not unreasonable to think that "P[ixel] 21" would have one, especially when Rick Osterlow explicitly stated that We were going to see it used again at some point in the future.

My pet theory is that seeing as this year's flagships seemingly lack IR components of the 4's sensor array used for Face Unlock Soli's "presence detection" is going to be used in tandem with a front-facing camera for a more effective face unlock. This bit however is pure speculation.

Edit - added some background information
