    Material Design Component Typography options

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:44 AM PDT

    Material Design Component Typography options

    So in MDC typography system we have option to define out textStyles in the base theme to maintain consistency and I love the idea it's great, We have 13 options to categorize our text styles according to the need from H1 heading to captions and more.

    MDC Typography

    However Designers in my company are not happy with this approach, they are saying that they don't want to limit their texts to only these options which is insane but I don't have any other option.

    Designers approach

    So to implement this I'll have to ditch theme attributes and just use style and reference style in my textview instead of textApperance. Any suggestion how should I proceed.

    Android emulator in slide over

    The idea of using iPad as a dev machine was always exciting to me, so I have experimented a little bit with Projector and android emulators running on VM. Looking forward to Apple porting Xcode to iPadOS, potentially paving the way for other IDEs like Android Studio.

    Here is the blog post if you are interested to learn how I set up emulators and Projector: https://abishov.com/2021/06/06/android-studio-on-ipad.html

    Best public transport from A To B

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:49 AM PDT

    Hi everyone, I'm planning to do an A to B app that will show the best route using an public transport for my finals, and the problem is that I have no idea how to begin with.
    I've done some research and i found out the Djikstra Algorith from this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2soi0VcNvz8, but not sure if it's gonna work based on the fact that the video is 6 years old.

    Can someone help me with some tips or tutorials so I know how should i begin with.

    Struggling to capture camera preview

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:37 AM PDT

    I have trained a neural network to style images/videos and I want to develop an app that will style the live view of the camera. I am struggling just to capture the preview. Does anyone have any good tutorial that can suggest? Everything that i found so far dont work or its too complicated just to open a preview.

    Google Play Store Ads - Only installs but no sign ups

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:12 PM PDT

    We have just started running Google Play store ads for our android App and we have noticed a weird thing. We can see installs happening on our play console however there is a huge huge drop on signup.

    What I am not able to understand is, what are these people doing with the app sitting on their phone?? I just don't get it. Are these users bots? Or are the numbers an approximation?

    We even checked on Google analytics, "first_open" event is also quite low. So these people, clicked on the ad, installed it and then didn't open the app??

    Has anybody faced this sort of behaviour? Can anybody suggest a better way to track this maybe?

    Re-launching a play store game

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 10:39 PM PDT

    Hi Android Developer,

    this is a Play Store ASO related question.

    I have this game that i developed and released on the play store 6 years ago, it did well in terms of rating / feedback but not really well in terms of download (around 20k) so i've let it died slowly, it basically didn't get any download since 3 years and the online mode (central in the game) is dead.

    Since i still believe in the potential of this game, i've spent 5 months updating / optimizing and adding feature to it, i also decided to rename it. Now i'm facing 2 solutions :

    1 - keeping the same old app page on play store and updating it (inlcuding changing the name) 2 - delete that old page and create a new one from scratch.

    What seem the best choice ? if i go with solution 2, is there some concern about Google automatically flagging this as a copy/duplicate of the previous one ? If i go with solution 1, is there some concern about the game being penalized by such a long period of inactivity ?

    Thanks in advance for your thought on the subject, and i can provide more contextual details if you need.

    How to set up SDL 2 for Android?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:29 PM PDT

    Does anyone know how to do this? It seems every source out there is outdated today. I am ending up with "mismatch" errors between the gradle and java versions, and gradle can't upgrade nor android studio can downgrade without a bunch of additional errors.

    No Content Provider error accessing Google Drive URI with targetSdkVersion=30

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:52 AM PDT

    I want to allow users to tap on a file in the Google Drive app and have my app import it. This works fine for other apps (Gmail, Files etc) but fails for Google Drive.

    My code is:

     ContentResolver cr = MyApp.shared.getContentResolver(); InputStream in; try { in = cr.openInputStream(uri); } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {

    The URI is:

    content://com.google.android.apps.docs.storage.legacy/enc%3DgC2T6MLbSZWDmvLbtuq0swi7PCvQDCIsLGYXKUEhBZW2mxJB11VW9tPKKi2gtzBr1l3rcQaY6bK1%0A37YbYK-9UemCBOhFmWE3B2hrM7fGYYrAB4dQEEzbsC4m7tdbh4dK70HJXw%3D%3D%0A

    I'm getting:

    java.io.FileNotFoundException: No content provider: content://com.google.android.apps.docs.storage.legacy/en.. etc as above

    With targetSDKVersion 29 this works fine, but with targetSDKVersion 30 it gets the above exception. In both cases the URI is the same.

    In my manifest I have

    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" />

    It seems like I'm missing something to do with scoped storage, but I can't see what. Any suggestions?

    Edit: I'm using the emulator, which is running on API 30

    Architecture questions. I am expected to be in charge of app development coordination...

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:55 AM PDT

    ... The problem is that my knowledge of computers is what I learned decades ago in high school. Please help me in getting in the right frame of thought to discuss things with the developers. I want to make it a minimum viable product that can scale in the second phase without major structural revisions.

    These are what I was thinking:

    • React Native Frame work: Need the app to be both Android and iOS compatible. Native development might be too expensive at this point.
    • For user identity management I was thinking OKTA may be overkill and expensive. I was thinking of Google identity management. I have no idea where OAuth 2.0 fits in here, or even Amazon SSO. A low cost, simple solution would be ideal. Is OpenID better? I probably sound so clueless here.
    • Server side: I don't know much about comparing AWS and Google App Engine. I figured I would give the developers their own choice. Any good references about this that you think would be better?
    • For user data I was thinking Google cloud storage. Would Amazon Simple Storage Service be a better choice?
    • What database framework do you recommend that is easy to implement and is scalable.

    Hi, I wrote a server framework and it is currently available for Android apps.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:40 AM PDT

    Hi, I wrote a server framework and it is currently available for Android apps.

    The name of the framework is Tanserver. Use pgSQL as the database server (pgSQL can directly return JSON strings) and supports hot reload APIs (even in a production environment!).

    The most important point is that the Android client (Java) only needs to call getJSON() to get the JSON string from this framework.

    GitHub: https://github.com/tansrv/tanserver

    Docs: https://www.tanserver.org/

    ----DEMO------

    API: hello_world

    string

    hello_world(Json::Value &value_recvd)

    {

    return "hello, world";

    }

    When the Android client call getJSON("hello_world", "{}")

    hello, world

    In addition, you should have a domain name (used to request an SSL certificate) before installing this framework. This may be troublesome, but it is necessary.

    ---

    If this framework is useful to you, I hope you can give me some feedback, which is very important to me, thank you.

    Developer survey for project

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 08:48 AM PDT

    Hi r/androiddev!

    I'm thinking of starting a project from an idea that's been brewing in my head, and would like feedback from the community and validation before I start building this out. I've created a survey to gather feedback and would appreciate it if you could try answering it, it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes of your time and developers from all backgrounds and experiences are welcome to participate. You can access the survey through this link: https://forms.gle/xvDr31J7jmhReghy9

    If you have any questions, feel free to contact me here or PM me.

    Cheers!
