Best Camera Smartphone under 500eu (600usd)

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:48 AM PDT

Looking for smartphone recommendations with a great camera, around 500eu (600usd). I'm a sucker for photography, especially small things like flowers and bugs, as well as the starry night sky.

Manual camera mode is a MUST. I've been eyeing VIVO X60 because it's supposed to have a night sky photo mode as well but looking for more suggestions.

What would you recommend? Thanks y'all!

Removing the google bar from a Samsung A21

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:13 AM PDT

I just got a new device and I absolutely hate the google bar on the top. It is so aesthetically displeasing. All my research unfortunately did nothing. Can't hold it and remove it. Can't remove it through widgets. When I disabled Google it just became a blue search bar. Is it possible to get rid of it?

My phone opens a white screen randomly (not white screen of death) and closes it.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 06:48 AM PDT

This is hard to explain but im gonna try! I got an samsung galaxy s8, it has been working really well this far but recently it has started to do this thing.

So randomly a white screen appears on my screen for a second and then disapears. It doesnt go over the bar on the bottom of my phone (go back, homescreen, open apps).

And it seems like the white screen is an app or something, it has a little zooming in transformation thing that happens everytime u open up an app. But the flash happens so fast that i havent been able to see if my phone actually opens an app. I got no clue whats going on. Should i reset my phone?

Feel free to ask more specific guestions because i have no clue how to explain this :D

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 03:33 AM PDT

My phone recently started acting weird, the volume would turn up by itself, I could not turn off the screen even tho the power button was totally functional, and the volume down button wouldn't work as well. After turning the phone off it would automatically go to fastboot mode and now after a complete wipe the volume down button has stopped working, even tho phisically there's nothing wrong with it, it's a software problem but idk what's wrong. can anyone help me? My phone is a xioami mi A2 and none of this has ever happened before

A11 Scoped Storage app data backup and restore solutions?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 08:34 AM PDT

Hi all, did a warranty replace on my phone and years of power-user customizations didn't cross/can't be restored due to A11's scoped storage policy for android/data (I believe). Has anyone had any success overcoming this? I'm honestly tempted to plug both phones into a pc and just manually copy the data over, but I don't know if that would work.

default Download Manager keeps notifying me it's downloading the same picture, over and over again...

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 12:09 PM PDT

Every now and then I get a notification sound, which I track down with a Notification Log app, and find out Download Manager is downloading the same file, Photo.pdf every 3-6 hours, several times per day. This seems to happen whenever I get a pdf from the internet, like a menu, and when I download gmail attachments. This goes on for many days.

    What gives?

SMS/MMS Compression Issues Samsung Galaxy S10e - Factory Reset and Sim Switching Hasn't worked

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 12:04 PM PDT

This is a weird one, maybe somebody here can help me out. I have a Samsung S10e on Visible (Verizon MVNO) with a really strange and persistent issue. Basically, every MMS received is heavily compressed (<100kb) and only the first frame of any GIF is displayed. I have another phone, a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, also on Visible, that works without issue.

    Here's what I've tried:

    1) Factory resetting the S10e and NOT RESTORING DATA
    -- No effect
    2) Swapping the two sim cards
-- No effect. The S20 FE still gets MMS normally, the S10e does not (RCS disabled in both cases for debug purposes)
    3) Swapped an active freedompop (AT&T) sim and factory reset, then swapped in the Visible SIM (there was a similar persistent network issue that was fixed this way on an S9+)
    -- No effect.

Now, another wrinkle:: If RCS is used on the S10e, and the other person ALSO has RCS, pictures come through fine (in the same messaging app, Google's official Android SMS app).

Normally at this point I'd request another SIM from Visible, but I don't understand why the sim card would work fine in another phone, and a known working sim card doesn't work in the s10e. It seems like more of a phone problem than a SIM card issue, or some combination thereof. Any suggestions? Many, many thanks in advance.

Does updating firmware with Odin risk losing Google Authenticator codes?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 11:32 AM PDT

Hi, I'm about to manually update my Samsung Galaxy S10e to Android 11 using Odin.

I won't be doing a complete wipe and re-install, but instead updating over the top to retain my apps, data and settings.

Can anyone specifically confirm if doing a flash update using Odin retains google authenticator codes though?

    Gesture Bar Stuck

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 11:09 AM PDT

I've been having this issue for a little while now when I switch app from landscape to portrait, the gesture bar gets stuck on the side and it prevents me from pressing in the app under it.

It also sometimes doesn't disapears when on full screen, in a game as an example, or when watching a video on YouTube.

It got so annoying I switched back to the 3 buttons.

It wasn't happening before until recently.

Has anyone experienced it and got it fixed? I'm thinking it's either the last update or a setting I shouldn't have changed but I don't know what it is.

    Thanks in advance!~

Has anyone had deleted images get mysteriously restored?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 10:03 PM PDT

I had this happen a few months ago and I still think about it. Maybe I may have done it myself accidentally? Seems sort of unreleastic since it's kind of an obscure section to go to... Or the worst case scenario is my partner went through my phone as I slept and restored them which is weird but they're the only person who could have done it if it wasn't the other two options.

    Galaxy S9: Samsung or Stock?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:54 AM PDT

I moved straight from Windows Mobile 7 (where I was an XDA regular) to Windows Phone, and didn't look back until I finally gave up my beloved Lumia 920 XL for a company-issued iPhone 8+, (which is not beloved by me).

My grandma just sent me her old Galaxy S9 because she's downgrading to a dumbphone. I'm excited to have ANYTHING besides an iPhone to play with.

I'm seriously thinking about going to stock Android in order to get the most pure experience; is that a good idea? If so, where do I start? I don't have time for the custom ROM flashing I was enjoying over a decade ago on Windows Mobile, and I don't think I'm interested in Samsung's ecosystem. If anything, I'll be pursuing Microsoft's Android ecosystem since my workplace is MS-focused.

Phone doesn't show PERCENT charge when it is charging with Power-Off.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:52 AM PDT

Galaxy S9: My previous Samsung phones always showed the Battery Percentage when the phone is powered off and charging.

But now I have the Galaxy S9 and all I can see is a Circle with the Charging Symbol (when it is powered off).

It does not display the percentage!

How are you supposed to know the percentage charge without having to turn on the phone ?

Doesn't the Google Search app randomly get stuck when searching?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:20 AM PDT

When I use the "Google" app ( as seen in this screenshot ), to search the web, often right before the progress bar reaches 100%, the app just stops and shows nothing. This happens in my previous phone and also with my new phone. In the previous phone, the only way to show the result was exit to the home screen and then switch back to the "Google" app. In the new phone, in addition to that method, pressing the search button again also shows the result.

I wonder if this is a bug? This has been annoying me for a while, and I cannot believe that Google is not fixing such an obvious issue, so I am not sure if this a bug. Maybe it is happening only to me?

Lock Screen - Clock and Music Info too damn high

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 02:36 AM PDT

    Hello AndroidQuestions Reddit,

I don't know when this happened but my clock used to be closer to the center top of my lock screen and my music player would appear underneath it. Now the clock and music player info are just at the very top of the screen touching the edge. It's rather annoying and I can't find any way to adjust the position of the clock. Is there a way to readjust the clock without resetting my settings? I'd like to avoid changing back my settings again. I tried searching but the only option people recommended was to download an additional app to move the position but I was just wondering if there's a built-in function in the android to do this already.

Here's a link to the screenshot of the lock screen. https://imgur.com/a/DfGb6fy

    Phone calls randomly missing audio

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:41 AM PDT

I'm at my wit's end here. I have an issue where sometimes I can't hear the person on the other end of a call. They can hear me. I've typically just called them back and that's solved it.

It seems to happen when the call is connected because I can hear the dial tones. Just now, I was speaking with someone just fine but when they transfered me to another person, I was getting no sound on the other end.

I've made sure it's not bluetooth, I've toggled the speaker phone, mute, etc. This problem affects me both when I'm connected to wifi and when I'm not

Is it safe to change screen resolution with ADB ?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 08:55 AM PDT

I have an LG G4 with a 1440p display, and the gaming performance and battery life kinda suck on this phone. It can't even run 1440p videos smoothly on yt. So I am thinking of reducing the screen resolution with ADB. Is it safe ? What is the worst case scenario ? And which new resolution do you suggest for the G4 ?(if it is safe)

Why is android so locked down compared to linux?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 12:56 PM PDT

I apologize in advance for the wall of text.

To illustrate what I mean, let me give two personal experiences...

I have an old Macbook I bought in college. It is old enough that it is no longer supported by MacOS. No problem - I download a light weight version of Linux (Lubuntu), install it, update everything, and boom, I've been able to revive an almost 10 year old device.

With phones, I'm in the market for a new phone but am certainly not a power user. My current phone is going on 4 years old and just lacks some features I would like. I want to buy something that is going to last, but the more research I do the more I realize that almost all phones seem to be tied to manufacturer software and updates, which at best seem to be around 3 years.

Some phones apparently allow you to load custom ROMs (which I understand to essentially be the phone version of different flavors of Linux), but even then it is apparently tied to specific devices. Unlike Linux where the Lubuntu I downloaded for my old Macbook would work just as well on the Gigabyte laptop I'm using right now, or the desktop I have in the other room; with phones apparently the custom ROM I download for a Samsung wont work on a OnePlus or LG. In fact, if I understand correctly, the custom ROM for a Samsung S10 wouldn't work on a Samsung S20.

So I guess my questions are:

What is so different about android that makes it so much less interoperable with devices? All of my computers have different hardware, but I don't have to download a special linux distro specific to that device/hardware.

Why has the mobile market developed in such a way where users seem to have no control over the device or software they run on it? I have multiple computers that are over a decade old I can still get updated software for and use. That macbook is almost a decade old and I still have a desktop running an i5 2500k.

What is stopping the android community from being more like the linux community? I'm sure it isn't an actual issue with the community itself because I see sites like XDA developers and there does appear to be a variety of custom ROMs out there, but like, what are the technical hurdles stopping mobiles devices from being as open as computers?

I have done some google searches into these questions, but haven't found anything the breaks it down for a dummy like me. If anyone could explain or just link me to some good resources that explain these questions I'd really appreciate it.

Choosing a device for playing audio

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 08:42 AM PDT

I have a surface duo. In a number of apps I cannot choose to play them directly through my Sonos system. Is there a setting available to allow this or is it an issue with the apps. Note Spottify does have a button in it that i can press that will accomplish this.

HELP! I can browse Web pages but apps won't connect to the internet

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 08:38 AM PDT

    Device - Galaxy S10 Android Version - 11

So I updated to the latest version of Android around the end of march and have been having intermittent Internet connection issues ever since.

When I first downloaded the update, I noticed later in the day that I was no longer receiving/able to send WhatsApp messages (I would have the "you may have new messages" notification but nothing actually coming through), couldn't refresh my twitter or Instagram feeds and various other apps (banking and play store) did not connect to the Internet, whilst others (such as reddit and news apps) didn't seem to be having any issues. I could also use my browser (I use chrome) freely and without any connection issue.

The only work around that I could find at the time was to restart my phone. I would get my WhatsApp messages through and be able to refresh my social media feeds but only for five or ten minutes before the issue started again.

I thought that I had solved this by resetting back to factory settings. No issues for a few weeks but now it has started to do the same thing again.

I have googled and saw a similar sounding issue on a forum where it mentioned the time and date may be wrong and this could trigger the issue however the date and time on my phone are correct.

Has anyone had the same issue and/or knows how to solve this?

    Thanks for your help!
