3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 169)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 03:58 AM PDT

Happy Friday, fellow Android gamers, and welcome to my weekly game recommendations based on the most interesting games I played last week :) Hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes a fun multiplayer twin-stick shooter, which is actually one of the only shooters I've played this year so far, a very unique PvP tower defense game, and an incremental idle RPG.

Also did a video about Supercell's new Clash Quest game this week, in case you're interested.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 169 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

    Underdogs[Game Size: 220 MB] (free)

Genre: Shooter / Twin-stick / Isometric - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Underdogs is a unique 3v3 twin-stick shooter where our objective is to stay close to a cart to push it to the enemy base, not unlike the Overwatch "Escort" game-mode.

Although there's only one game-mode at the moment, we can switch between any of the game's 13 unique weapons between respawns to best counter our opponents. And the small map sizes create a gameplay experience that is fast-paced and hectic – in a good way. XP earned by playing matches gradually levels up our character, which unlocks coins and new weapons that can be used in all future games. The coins can be spent on buying new cosmetics for our character.

The controls work decently well, with a left-side joystick for moving our character, and a right-side joystick to aim our weapons. Aiming is very unforgiving, which means it takes some training to get good at. We can also double-tap to jump forward or hold down a button to activate a shield that can help us get out of tough situations.

The low-poly art-style is simple and clean, and although Underdog currently lacks additional content, it's a fun and promising game that is actively being updated by its indie developers.

Underdogs monetizes through iAPs for more of the coins we also earn by leveling up our character. It's a perfect no-pay-to-win monetization since these coins can only be spent on cosmetics that have no impact on the gameplay.

Guardian Chronicle [Total Game Size: 375 MB] (free)

Genre: Tower Defense / PvP / Co-op / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Guardian Chronicle is a unique real-time PvP and co-op tower defense game where we create a deck of five heroes that we place as towers on the map to survive waves of enemies.

Much like in Random Dice, our five heroes are put into a continuous randomized queue, from which we can only ever place the first hero. Every time a hero is placed, the mana cost of the next hero increases, which means things slow down as the match progresses. Fortunately, we can merge two heroes on the map to create a level 2 version of the next hero in queue at no cost, which also frees up space on the map for new heroes.

Apart from the typical damage dealers and heroes that slow down enemies, some allow us to gain mana faster, which is useful in the early game, while others increase the power of adjacent heroes. Combined with a large roster of heroes to pick from, this enables a lot of unique strategies.

During PvP, our objective is to survive longer than the opponent, whereas the co-op mode has us work with another player to see how far we can get. Matches typically take no more than 3-5 minutes, although I think we're often matched with bots when not playing with friends.

Winning matches reward us points that unlock hero chests. We can also get heroes through a gacha system that either costs real-life money or tickets earned through gameplay. The more cards we collect, the more each hero can be leveled up.

Guardian Chronicle monetizes through iAPs for the gacha system and a $13.99 battle pass. Paying players have a pay-to-progress-faster advantage, but co-op is a great way to grind new heroes for free players and the casual core gameplay experience is fun.

Tap Wizard: Idle Magic Quest [Game Size: 94 MB] (free)

Genre: Idle / Incremental / RPG - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little (idle)

    tl;dr review:

Tap Wizard is an incremental idle RPG in which we equip a wizard with five unique spells that it then uses to automatically defeat endless hordes of enemies while we gradually increase its powers through research, spell upgrades, and weapon enchantments.

Although combat is fully automated, the gameplay feels very active since we need to manually collect the various power-ups and healing potions that constantly drop from killed monsters in order to deal with the strong bosses waiting at the end of every zone. Some of these power-ups get saved in our inventory so we can trigger them when we need them the most.

Apart from progressing from zone to zone, we can enter daily raids to receive spell stones used to unlock new spells, while existing spells rank up the more they're used, providing stronger active and passive abilities. Meanwhile, gold can be spent on researching permanent stat boost and a "power" currency is used to add enchantment bonuses to weapons – both of which are currencies gained from killing monsters. Unused power also adds a stat boost to our wizard whenever we die or manually reset to stage 1.1.

Although the UI is slightly confusing, the game has lots of interesting mechanics to offer and delivers a polished idle RPG experience.

Tap Wizard monetizes through a $9.99 iAP to remove the scarce incentivized ads but still get the rewards, and additional iAPs for a premium currency used to buy convenience items and unlock spells faster than through completing daily raids. The iAPs don't feel necessary to enjoy the game.

Help me find this racing game again

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 05:49 AM PDT

Hey, I used to play a racing game a few years a go which was very fun, but I can't seem to find it anymore despite searching for a while. I don't remember the name but I'm pretty confident there was 'racing' in it, so '___ racing' although this could be wrong. The game was a very simple 3D racing game, which was more reminiscent of a rally game as if I remember correctly most of the tracks were large off-road circuits. The graphics were somewhat low poly. The progress in the game too was relatively simple, by winning coins you'd be able to purchase new cars and colours. I believe there was a multiplayer mode but once again this could be wrong. The controls I used was just one joystick. I also remember using one car which was similar to an E-type jaguar, in a bright pink colour. Finally the game used funky physics a lot, the cars would do a bunch of small jumps over bumps. I hope someone knows what game I'm talking about with this poor description haha, if you do please tell me, thanks!

[DEV] Space Swap - A casual space game where you control the ship with just one click

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 07:18 AM PDT

Hi there! This is my first atempt at casual games, where I tried to use simple concept with one button control, but with steep level of difficulty. All you do is swap ship directions while it is flying around the Earth. It is my attempt at old game styles where you controlled a space ships but very simplified for every player to enjoy!

Hope to hear some reviews and also ideas!

    Simple rpg games?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 11:46 AM PDT

    Hi,

Are there any simple rpg games with 1 hero (no gacha games or similiar, I just want one hero). Something like postknight or nonstop knight. Vertical/Portrait games would be nice but not necessary.

    Thx

    [REQUEST] RPG games for Android

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 06:16 PM PDT

Hi! I would love to play an RPG game focused on something like everyday life. Something like Stardew Valley but in RPG format. A game in which the character has to go to class/work/build relationships, etc.

It can have adult themes but I would prefer if that weren't the main plot. I don't mind romance, and I'm also fine with scary games but I do hate an excessive amount of jumpscares. I don't have money, so looking for free games. Thanks.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 09:02 PM PDT

Do they even exist? I think I have bought most of them from amazon but they all have really bad lag. Assuming its the bluetooth. This would be for a 10.1 tablet.

Looking for an old turn based game

    Posted: 08 Apr 2021 12:42 PM PDT

I'm looking for a game that I played many years ago that I've forgotten the name of. Some of the features are:

    1. Turn based
    2. Blue (the player) vs orange (bot or 2nd player)
    3. Start with a blank map, and both teams have 'cores' at opposite end of the map
    4. The player then put turrets on the map which the player can choose to rotate where it is pointing at.
    5. There are also power turrets where it can rotate other turrets, a special turret with 3 barrels, but there are only one per game for each teams.
    6. If a turret faces each other, noting happens, if a turret faces the back of an opponent's turret, their turret is returned.
    7. It is on the edges of an isometric grid.
    8. The art is very minimalist and looks like neon glow (orange and blue)

I really miss this game, it was very simple but challenging. I hope someone here knows it.

    Found my old screenshot! https://imgur.com/a/oRcOQIP

    Thanks

Edit: hexagonal > isometric Edit2: added image
