The A52/A72 are only the third phones ever to offer high refresh rate, IP rating and headphone jack

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 06:02 AM PDT

    According to GSMArena's search function:

    • 38 phones offer high refresh rate and IP rating (67/68)
    • 104 phones offer high refresh rate and headphone jack
    • 228 phones offer IP rating and headphone jack
    • Only 5 phones offer all 3:
    1. Sharp Aquos R2 compact
    2. Sony Xperia 5 II
    3. And now the Samsung A52, A72, A52 5G

Kind of unfortunate that this is what the market has come to.

Lost my phone on a snowmobile trail 3 months ago, still works!

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 04:39 PM PDT

As the title says, a few months ago my phone, a sony xperia 1 ii, fell out of my pocket on a snowmobile trail. I found the general location of it using google but could never find it under all of the snow. A couple days ago I found it, buried in the sand still working. The discoloration is from the screen protector. The phone doesn't have a single scratch on it, and it booted up and works perfectly. I cleaned it with compressed air and took a gamble to turn it on without letting it dry out since it was already working while in the ground. Even crazier is the battery only lost around 7 or 8% charge while in the ground.

OLED displays have made the used phone market much worse

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 02:46 PM PDT

Not as much a rant as an observation. Ive been shopping for a used last gen phone to replace my current device, which I bought used a few years back. I prefer buying used phones since I don't need bleeding edge tech and I don't usually have much to spend on a new phone.

As I'm browsing sites for a used phone, I've noticed that nearly every used last gen flagship and midtier phone has moderate to severe screen burn-in. Of course, not every last gen OLED screen was bad and not all last gen devices adopted OLED, but a significant number of used last gen phones at a reasonable price would require a screen replacement to make them acceptable for daily use.

Compared to shopping around just 4 years ago, there are far fewer last gen devices that are in decent shape. While I'm not opposed to doing a screen replacement on a used phone, it adds upwards of 70$ to getting a pre-owned device. And considering the factory screens didn't last more than 2 years, it seems like a bad investment anyway.

Tldr; Since OLED screens don't last long, the used phone market is much sparser than is was just a few years ago
