What to do with a found Android phone? It's locked and I want to return it to its owner, or recycle it.

    tl;dr: the title

A restaurant belonging to a friend of a friend closed a couple weeks ago. There was a Samsung phone in the lost-and-found box that had never been claimed. It changed hands a couple of times before it reached me.

I don't really need another phone, but I suppose I could use it or recycle it somehow. In order of preference, I would like to:

    • Track down the original owner
    • Reset it and donate it to a worthy charity
    • Reset it and add it to my pool of test devices

However it's locked with a PIN and I don't know how to get into it. There's no visible serial number on the outside. It no longer has phone service. I can't reboot it, put it into recovery mode, or even power it down without the PIN. (Kudos to Android & Samsung for their security.) My current working plan is to wait for the battery to die, then see if I can get it into recovery mode after that.

    Any other suggestions?

What are the risks of buying a second hand phone?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I'm thinking of buying a used phone from Swappa but I'm not sure how reliable the quality is. Is there anything that I should be aware of beforehand? Battery life is also important and I dont know how to go about checking it before I buy. I'm concerned that there's a chance of getting a phone that has spyware on it too.

Should I stick with Android, or go with iPhone?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 07:42 PM PDT

For years I stood with Android because it was substantially cheaper and more modifiable.

Now iPhones are fairly cheaper, and I don't find myself using apps that aren't already on iOS.

Should I just switch over at this point? The iOS and iMessage are enticing.

Can you guys make a case for why I should still stick with Android please? Thanks.

    Custom ROM on Android 2

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 12:31 PM PDT

Hello! 2 days ago I found my old phone with Android 2. It is very slow, so I thought about installing a custom ROM. Is it possible to unlock the bootloader and then install another faster ROM?

Subpar photo quality on new Moto Edge 5G. Bad hardware, or can a new camera app or settings tweak improve quality?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 12:21 PM PDT

    Hi geniuses.

I just got a new Motorola Moto Edge 5G. The camera specs seemed decent:

64MP f/1.8 wide camera, 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide/macro camera (117° field of view), 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera, time of flight sensor.

However the photo quality is subpar, borderline awful. Portrait shots come out quite pixelated and fuzzy. Standard photos the same.

Is this due to inadequate hardware? Or should I perhaps try a new camera app? Or maybe tweak settings within the default camera app? I'm at a loss. My wife's iPhone 8 takes better quality photos, hell my Samsung A21 does too, and I'm at the point of considering returning the phone if I can't figure out a solution.

    Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to root an Asus ZenPad S3 10 Z500M (P027) ?

    Just the title.

Long story short, the thumbnails folder inside DCIM is 10 f***ing gigabytes big for some stupid reason, and repeated attempts to delete it yields no results (free space never drops by 10 GB), and trying USB debugging/ADB commands also similarly fails spectacularly because computers are stupid.

So has anyone successfully rooted this device? Eventually i'll be in a position to just get a different tablet that's easily rootable so if you are going to suggest this, I'll gladly take specific suggestions (with the REQUIREMENTS that the tablet must have a large screen of at least 9-10 inches and absolutely must be 4:3 aspect ratio near or above 2048x1563 AND it has to be easily rootable/unlockable bootloader or otherwise easily "hackable")

How can I change a Samsung Music playlist shortcut icon?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 11:46 AM PDT

I found a bunch of apps on the app store that can change an apps icon but they dont work with shortcuts created from an app.

I also tried an apk editor and had no idea what I was doing there but I checked every folder and couldnt find anything helpful.

I have a bunch of playlist shortcuts on my home screen that I want to change the icons for but I cant figure out how to do it... is this possible or is it something only the Samsung Music app can control and wont let you change?

I assume you can change any icon on your homepage through the android files or something but I cant figure it out at all, been trying for the past 2 hours. The only thing I havent tried yet was plugging my phone into a computer through usb because I dont have a usb plug for my phone.

Having an issue moving apps from internal storage to SD (Samsung Galaxy S8+)

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 11:10 AM PDT

Hey folks! I'm having a weird issue with moving apps from my S8+ internal storage to SD card.

I'm gonna use Genshin Impact as an example. I used the phone's feature to move an app to SD card. It goes through the process and then says that the app is now stored on SD card. However, after I check the internal storage it still shows almost the same free space. SD card storage shows that there's 9.8GB of applications on it, but the overall storage shows just 935MB. I'm just very confused and would appreciate any help.

    Thanks!

Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 Android 9 Pie doesn't have a Pro Video Mode?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:36 AM PDT

I've got a Galaxy j5 2017 with android pie doesn't have a pro video mode like android 8 had? Is there a solution to this? I liked the samsung camera app, now this one doesn't have the options I need. What can I do about it?

Galaxy J5 2017 doesn't update beyond Android 9, so I'm kind of stuck here. Is there a way to get the better app from android 10? Or is there any other solution to this? Would it be possible to use the app from android 8? Or does that one no longer compete with the one from 9 in AI and AF?

Would a custom rom help with this

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:12 AM PDT

So I have a galaxy s8 that ocaisonally reboots on it's own, and I really want to fix it because I'm 14, I can't just get a new one.

My phone's default apps that come pre-installed also frequently crash, basically it says google play movies has stopped for like 30 straight, it just keeps popping up.

I've tried factory resetting my phone twice (not in one day lol), wich didn't work. Then I realised that I wasn't running the newest android version, but I do have the highest version available for my phone (9).

If I installed android 11 onto my phone, would it help with that? I might just do it anyways because of the features, and my phone still runs fast. but I was wondering if that might stop.

If it's a hardware problem, then I get it, whatever

What are some of the current best rootable phones?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 09:03 PM PDT

Hi, I'd like to upgrade my phone and I'm a bit out of the loop with the current generation phones. I'm looking for something I can load a custom rom onto that also has expandable storage. Preferably not a chinese phone if possible. Does a phone like that exist in the current gen of smartphones?

Accidentally began factory reset - any hope of recovering data?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 04:04 AM PDT

I stupidly accidentally began a factory reset on my Samsung Galaxy A10e.

Since I got it it's had issues charging while off (like if it ran out of battery) and this time it had been dead overnight and really wasn't seeming like it was charging (kept showing 0% and the wall outlet icon if I tried to force it on, while plugged in). After some light Googling I found that Volume Down + Power held together could do a restart on the phone, and was hoping that would put it into a better state.

Well, it turns out that leads to a menu where one of the options is factory reset, and you move up and down using volume and select with power.

When that screen came up I wasn't expecting it so I shifted the phone in my hand to get a better look at it, in the process my fingers let pressure off the buttons and reapplied it... leading to moving down the menu and selecting factory reset.

The phone showed the Android logo and said "Erasing..." I freaked out and pulled the power cord, it shut off since it had no battery anyway.

TL;DR - I accidentally began the factory reset process (for a second or two) - is there any hope of not having a fully reset phone?

    What is android.auto_generated_rro__?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 09:54 AM PDT

I recently noticed a system app titled "android.autogenerated_rro_", & I can't seem to figure out what it is. Is it a legitimate application, or is it associated with some type of malware/spyware? I don't know a lot about phones, so I apologize if this is a dumb question. Thank you in advance for any answers.

Is there any way to downgrade my vivo y12 from android 11 to pie?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:22 AM PDT

Why do all new apps show up on a new home screen. They don't show up on the home screen. Even if it's alot of space

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:13 AM PDT

Every time I install a new app it shows up on a new home screen. There is alot of space in the home screen. But everytime I install a new app it shows up on the screen after the main home screen.

Even if I just have the home screen, it will automaticly make a new screen and place the new app there.

Im running the latest android version on note20.

    Keyboard Layout

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Is there a way to change to the keyboard, or even get a new keyboard, where I can change the layout so that I don't have to hold down a key to select from a list of punctuation marks. They key I hold right now is a period but I would rather it be a question mark.

    Unofficial IP rating

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 07:47 AM PDT

Are there any sources that test non-IP-certified phones for water resistance?

I want to buy a new Android phone, and an IP rating is important to me. This sucks, because this drops a lot of attractive options, like those from Xiaomi. I am looking for a source that tests phones as professionally as possible. Not a quick 10 second dimple in a glass of water and approving it, but actually submerging it 1.5 meters for 30 minutes and checking a week later for any signs of damage, for example. I feel like a lot of phones could have an IP rating, seeing rubbers around the charging ports of non-IP-certified phones in Jerryrigeverythings disassembly videos for example.
