3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 164)

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 06:13 AM PST

It's Friday - and that can only mean one thing! It's time for another roundup of the most interesting games I played last week! :) Hope you'll enjoy it.

This episode includes a truly old-school 3D MMORPG that, for once, isn't pay-to-win, a new indie fighting game in the veins of Crash Arena Turbo Stars, and a survival dungeon crawler taking place in a futuristic radioactive ocean full of sea-creatures!

In case you missed it: My recent post about the most highly anticipated mobile games of 2021: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/lqiqnb/these_are_the_12_most_anticipated_upcoming/

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 164 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Warhammer: Odyssey [Game Size: 1.35 GB] (free)

    Genre: MMORPG / Old-school / 3D / Open-world - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Warhammer Odyssey is an old-school quest-driven fantasy MMORPG with a fair monetization model and no auto systems.

The game features 6 character classes and 12 specializations that, for once, are not gender-bound, and after character creation, we're thrown straight into the open world to complete quests and kill creatures. As we level up, we unlock skill and stat points that can freely be distributed to customize our character.

Combat is slow-paced and tab-targeted in Warhammer Odyssey, with each hit and ability taking some time to land. While some might dislike this, others, like me, will appreciate the old-school combat experience that feels inspired by games like AdventureQuest 3D or Oldschool Runescape.

While primarily PvE-focused, we can duel other players to enter a PvP state. We can also create parties for grinding with friends, or even exchange items directly with other players – a feature that is rarely seen in mobile MMORPGs.

The biggest downside is that the game ran my phone rather hot after 30-40 minutes of playing. This will hopefully be fixed via updates over time.

Warhammer Odyssey monetizes through iAPs for extra inventory slots, potions that increase our XP gain for a short period of time, and a few other minor convenience items. It's a very free-to-play friendly monetization only rivaled by Oldschool Runescape.

Machanical Instinct [Total Game Size: 322 MB] (free)

    Genre: Fighting / 3D / Indie / Mech-like - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Machinal Instinct is a wacky and fast-paced 3D fighting game by Once Upon a Tower and Mars: Mars developer Pomelo Games.

The game has us build a mech for our pig character (yes, you read that right – pig) using 6 types of mech parts, each of which can be upgraded by acquiring multitudes of it. Since there are lots of ways to combine these parts, there are many different strategies for creating the most powerful mech, which is part of what makes the game enjoyable.

Once we're satisfied with our mech, we head into 1v1 real-time PvP matches to battle it out against other players. During combat, we swipe to rush forward, dodge incoming attacks, land punches with our mech arms, or fire our long-range missiles. If we win, we're rewarded with a loot box full of mech parts that takes three to eight hours to unlock.

While fighting and experimenting with different mech setups is fun, progress is very slow and the game is a bit rough around the edges and could use some extra polish. The current lack of players also creates an experience where we're often matched against opponents that are way too strong for us. It's a promising game, but it needs more players and development time to truly shine.

Machinal Instinct monetizes through iAPs used to instantly open loot boxes or acquire new loot boxes without having to win them, which creates a pay-to-progress-faster advantage for paying players.

Taravana [Game Size: 480 MB] (free)

Genre: Survival / Dungeon Crawler / Roguelike - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Taravana is a roguelite survival game that plays like a fantasy dungeon-crawler, except it takes place deep down in a dark radioactive ocean full of other-worldly beasts and creatures.

As we start exploring the underwater areas surrounding our base one tile at a time, we encounter random events and creatures that we need to kill using our ranged and melee weapons, all while making sure we don't run out of oxygen or succumb to radioactivity. Once one area has been cleared, we can move to the next to encounter a new event or creature. Unlike most roguelites, we also need to survive our way back to the base to keep the loot we've gathered, which adds a nice extra challenge.

At our base, we use resources to craft items, equip loot, and spend the in-game currency on upgrading our stats to grow stronger. Unfortunately, the gameplay is dreadfully slow. Not only do we need to wait a few seconds when moving between areas of the map, but repairing gear, buying equipment, and speeding up progress quickly burns through the scarce in-game currency.

Taravana starts off great but quickly grinds to a halt unless we spend money. The game monetizes through iAPs for a premium currency used to buy new weapons and scuba diving suits, incentivized ads for some minor rewards, and a $20 monthly subscription to remove the wait times and grind.

If it wasn't for the incredibly expensive and aggressive monetization, Taravana would be a great and unique roguelite dungeon crawler.

Any decent android-based TCGs with a small card database?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 04:30 AM PST

I'm looking to start a new TCG but will only be able to play semi-casually. Are there any that are designed with a small card database in mind, so that it's kind of based on how you use the cards, and not collecting thousands of cards until you have the ones you want?

    Much obliged.

[REQUEST] Puzzle games that aren't the Room?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 11:35 AM PST

I like puzzle games, and have played all the current Layton Games that have been ported over, and both monument valley games. I've really liked those.

I've tried the Room and beat it, and played a bit of the Room 2, but just really can't get into them at all. They're almost too abstract?

Anyway: Looking for puzzle games Preferably free, but not required if it's good Preferably more like Layton or Monument Valley, but open to anything Not match 3

Looking for an old android game

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 11:22 PM PST

I'm looking for an old game. You had a team of anthropomorphic animals. Your mission was to carry a light source and remove the darkness from the land. You had a large choice of varying animals, each with their own roles. The animation was stunning and different. You could have up to four allies. Every 5 nodes you could stop at an in. You unlocked more allies by collecting pieces/tokens. You fought dark shadowy creatures. The game scrolled from right to left as your characters walked forward.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Help me finding a (maybe simulated) turnbased mobile game.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 02:08 PM PST

I played this game in 2013-2015, the logo was black and red with white, in the menu the background was white and the buttons were red and black, it had 3v3 or 4v4 (maybe simulated) turnbased fights. It was 2D. You could also have many characters that you opened with loot boxes. I think you could even have raid against one boss with 6 characters.

example of the fights. It's pretty vague but that's about it.

    Thanks in advance
