Android Dev - Google Play Store is a Joke

Android Dev - Google Play Store is a Joke

Google Play Store is a Joke

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:56 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have a question, maybe I am stupid to understand. Why is the review time so long when apps like this:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.royaldevs.fortcustoms
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.app.new_chat
are in the top new free apps getting a lot of organic traffic. What's the point of the long review when scams and rubbish are posted in the thousands daily and good apps that people developed for years are not promoted there and struggling to get organic downloads. I don't know but Google's Algorithms are a joke which is really funny considering they have endless cashflow. Humans should review the apps and reject crap like this and promote the good apps manually IMO.

Sudden drop in installs since 18 March?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:34 AM PDT

I am experiencing a drastic drop in the number of installs of my app. Before 18 March, conversion rate was 59%, right now it's a mere 27%. All countries are affected and sources (search, browse, 3rd party) as well. App looks the same on the appstore, we did not change anything. Is it only me, or Google changed something?

Those that started in Android development and got out of mobile, how did you do it?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 10:35 AM PDT

I've been doing android for 6 years now. I guess recruiters and other might see that and assume I'm a "senior" developer. Well I sure as hell don't feel like it. I'm not "in tune" with the latest trends. I never pay attention to Google I/O and new releases. Hell I haven't touched jetpack or half of the new architecture components they released a few years ago. I'm just not passionate about mobile. That said I have a growing interest in Flutter/Dart. I've been coming to the idea that maybe Android or possibly mobile as a whole isn't for me. So I'm curious to hear any stories of people that moved on from mobile development.

Firebase crashlytics receiving logs from unkown apps

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 11:02 PM PDT

So I have registered only one app in the firebase project and had been receiving crash logs only related to that app. But recently I have noticed that I am getting crash logs from other apps as well, which I don't own, these logs also show that app version is higher than the version released on playstore. Could someone please help me in figuring out why is this happening and how can I avoid it?

Best android development tablet in 2021

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:02 AM PDT

    Hello everybody,

I should propose the purchase of an Android tablet to the company I work for, with the purpose of app development.

To be honest, I don't know what are the key features that a development-tablet should have...

Perhaps an easy unlocking of the root permission and guaranteed updates to the next versions of Android...

    Anyway, any suggestions?

Is there a website where I can use shared code for components?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 06:58 AM PDT

I'm new to the android development and this semester we are supposed to make a android app. My question is whether there's a website where people share their code and other users can use it. Similar in web development. Mainly for some style components like buttons, slide bars etc. Don't want to reinvent the wheel.

My google play account got terminated with no prior reasons!!!!!

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:44 AM PDT

Hi guys,A week ago I had my google play developer account terminated. This is my only source of income as I make apps for clients on freelancer and as a gift I put the apps on my console as this makes my bid on any job more attractive for the clients as I have more than 100000 installs on my acciunt with my publisued apps with my email address and my package name to avoid any suspensions (As long as it is not NSFW apps). So,I contacted google and filed an appeal. One week later,I've got the response from someone called taylor,I thought she was a human at first but I'm pretty sure now that It is a bot.She sent me this email as follows:"After review of your appeal, we're unable to reinstate your developer account. Your Google Play Developer account has been terminated due to multiple violations of the Developer Program Policies by an associated Google Play developer account. We've reviewed and confirmed this association."As I've told you before I have no emails associated with the account except my email and all the apps that I do are a 100% clean and doesn't contain any malicious code as I am the one making them! I contacted "taylor" again telling her that I have no emails associated with my account and the response was automated as follows:"As much as I'd like to help, I'm not able to provide any more detail or a better answer to your question. In our previous email, I made sure to include all the information available to me."I sent her again other emails that this is a missundertstanding but no reply after this email which is clearly automated. Now I have more than 4 clients asking where the apps are and one app had more than 5000 installs which make my position even worse.Google need to know how to treat its developers right and give us more details about the termination as I now have many problems with my clients and my only source of income.I also had apps that I created that had more than 50000 installs and had ads revenue that I used which is now gone as well.I really am having a mental breakdown and am having anxiety and my friend has recently died from covid 19 and I cannot take this anymore as google can't tell me more about my account termination. Please guys share this story,We could stop google's monoply if we united together against google and treat us developers better than this attitude as if the account terminated was a well known company like voodoo ,Google would have ben head over heels to reinstate the accountn even though this bot had made a mistake on my account as I have no associations on my account. Please guys share this story with other subreddits to stop google monoply against us developers which make the google play store a store with more apps than apple store! Ps:I am still having problems with my clients and They want a refund of a part of the money as The contract that I signed with them had that I would put their app on my account forever if it had no NSFW content and to change the package id with the one that I usually use with my apps.

I think I've reached my peak as a beginner and not improving as much.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 05:43 PM PDT

I started learning Android development in my spare time about a year ago. I've learned a lot. I understand the fundamentals. I'm fairly up to date with the latest trends and technologies. I'm familiar with most of the Jetpack libraries. But lately, I feel like I'm not learning or improving my skills as much. I find myself stuck with creating the same old basic MVVM apps that fetch and cache data from an API, then display the items on the RecyclerView.

I tried doing custom views and complex animations involving MotionLayout, but I find the learning curve for those is high for my skillset. So here I am feeling like I've reached a plateau as a beginner. And the only way to improve is to land a junior position and work on a real-world app and learning from the seniors.

Did anyone go through something similar when they first started?

App privacy policy and automatic play store crash reporting

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:19 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I have a question regarding the privacy policy for my application I want to publish. I am an experienced android developer, but I don't usually publish by my own. This would be my first one in a long time after gdpr became active.

My app is actually free to use, does not need any permission (not even network) and I do not collect any data nor do I use crash reporting services.

BUT, what is about the automatically collected data from Google's own crash reporting (ANR etc in Play Store). To my knowledge the user has to opt in and I have no option to turn this off by myself.

Do I need to include this into my privacy policies? How do you handle this?

(I am aware that there can't be any legal advice)

Unable to install apps, getting INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES:Scanning Failed.: No signature found in package of version 2 or newer for package (Name)"

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:11 AM PDT

There was an app (not mine) which I had installed on my android phone. The app used to work fine and I loved it. It worked fine till my phone was on Android 10.

Just a month ago or so I updated my phone to Android 11. The app vanished. Idk why. I needed it for an important task (no it wasn't a game). I couldn't download it either from the play Store, gave me errors and I just reported then to Google. I had to use a cheaper alternative that time.I felt that maybe i should try installing from a website. After all the app was free. So I did. Neither did that work.

So I was unhappy. The whole month I tried various ways to get it, also tried whatnot websites. I once managed to get a way older app, surprisingly, it worked. But it was so old that it didn't have the features I needed. So I stopped using that. Now I felt hopeless. Felt like this app is not for A11(it didn't work on my other A11 phone as well, it worked on my old Oreo but the performance was sluggish as phone was old, do my productivity would be reduced).

Then I felt ooh let's try changing the name of the package. It didn't help. Then I downloaded an app called APK installer which showed all errors, if they occurred. I got one. Confused. It showed "INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES: Scanning Failed.: No signature found in package of version 2 or newer for package (com.example.app.bad)"

I felt bad. So I started signing them. That didn't work either!! Lost all my hope now.

But then, I searched for that error. I FOUND THAT AS AN ISSUE FOR MANY OTHER APPS! LISTED BY DEVS! A Dev on an online forum created a thread addressing this, saying he got this issue. Well the app is actually having just a small problem. I don't know how many of you would understand. But it mentioned that setting an app's target SDK version to 30 caused that issue in A11, try changing it to 29. And now I didn't feel any hope through this. Still I downloaded an apk from a website to try it.

Passed it in an app called APK EDITOR PRO. I bought it earlier, it was cheap and used earlier for editing the package name, as mentioned earlier. There I searched for the option TARGET SDK VERSION. Changed it to 29. Parsed it. Tried to install it. Ummm...... IT WORKED!! now the app is on my phone in a fully functional state.

This this small incident made me happy. This also taught me that hard work won't ever disappoint you, you'll always get to taste the sweet fruit of success. Thank you fellow redditors for reading my stupid story and have a nice day!

Moral:- problems, change Target SDK TO 29, not 30

I'm not a Dev, I'm just an Android enthusiast

Android | Kotlin | Flow - cannot be cast to kotlinx.coroutines.flow.StateFlow

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:49 AM PDT

I'm trying to get myself familiar with DataStore, so in my current project I'm trying to use it.

In my dependency. I've added :

     implementation "androidx.datastore:datastore-preferences:1.0.0-alpha06"

Then I created this class to handle data-store:

    class BasicDataStore(context: Context) : PrefsDataStore( context, PREF_FILE_BASIC ), BasicImpl { override val serviceRunning: Flow<Boolean> get() = dataStore.data.map { preferences -> preferences[SERVICE_RUNNING_KEY] ?: false } override suspend fun setServiceRunningToStore(serviceRunning: Boolean) { dataStore.edit { preferences -> preferences[SERVICE_RUNNING_KEY] = serviceRunning } } companion object { private const val PREF_FILE_BASIC = "basic_preference" private val SERVICE_RUNNING_KEY = booleanPreferencesKey("service_running") } } @Singleton interface BasicImpl { val serviceRunning: Flow<Boolean> suspend fun setServiceRunningToStore(serviceRunning: Boolean) }

In my viewmodel, I'm trying to use that value, like this :

    class MainViewModel(application: Application) : AndroidViewModel(application) { ... private val basicDataStore = BasicDataStore(application) val serviceRunning : StateFlow<Boolean> get() = basicDataStore.serviceRunning as StateFlow<Boolean> fun setServiceRunning(serviceRunning: Boolean) { viewModelScope.launch(IO) { basicDataStore.setServiceRunningToStore(serviceRunning) } } }

But it gives me the following error :

    Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: com.mua.roti.data.datastore.BasicDataStore$serviceRunning$$inlined$map$1 cannot be cast to kotlinx.coroutines.flow.StateFlow at com.mua.roti.viewmodel.MainViewModel.getServiceRunning(MainViewModel.kt:33) ...

In xml, in UI part :

     <TextView android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="@{main.serviceRunning.value.toString()}" />

With viewmodel everything was so cool and easy, easy to read and implement. Now I'm confused with Flow. Thanks.

Anyone have experience with receiving fake reviews?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 02:24 PM PDT

My app only had 5 reviews this morning. I got a flood of 3 one-star reviews, all from the same country, all saying the same thing within a few minutes of each other. They also liked each other's reviews.

Is this just something that happens? What a bummer

    Unity VS Android Studio

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:14 AM PDT

    Hello everyone

I had some questions about this. I know that Unity is used for games, while Android Studio for apps (In most of the cases)

I have tried both of them, I have a game uploaded to Play Store made with Unity and I have developed an app wit Androuid Studio for my job.

What I wanted to know was, which advantages has Android Studio over Unity?

I mean, in my experience, with Unity you can do the same (Am I wrong?) and it is far more intuitive and free. Also, animations and images are way more easy to set.

    Thank you very much!
