    Android Questions: Tempered Glass

    Tempered Glass

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:59 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking to get a tempered glass screen protector, but there's so many listings marked with 6D, 9D, 9H labels, which is quite overwhelming, are there any differences between them or are these just your typical Chinese marketing gimmicks?

    Thanks

Android: formating an SD Card as internal memory

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 09:21 PM PST

I recently learned I could format that SD Card in my phone as internal memory, which I did without any problems.

I only had to reinstall my MP3 library, everything else on the SD card was still there and working...

This increased my phone's internal memory from 32GB to 146GB (32GB + 128GB SD Card)

I also learned that Samsung have disabled this option on all Samsung phones and tablets. I haven't found out why they chose to disable it through Google searches.

Anyone know why they disabled this option? I would have done this on my Samsung tablet if it wasn't disabled.

is there a way to use my Nexus 7 2013 WIFI on Android 11 ROOTED as WIFI extender/repeater

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 11:24 AM PST

    hey guys,

so i've been looking for this for a long time and can't seem to find any solution to it , is there a way to share the wifi connection that im connected to in my tablet as a modem from my tablet?

my note 8 has this option by default in wifi hotspot settings as "WIFI SHARE" but i can't find any alternatives for my Nexus 7 on lineage OS

is this a hardware limited function or could it be done with rooted apps?

i just dont want to use a crooked non root app as solution since non of those worked ...

i just want to use this old tablet as modem instead of note 8, i could use that more than this tablet

How can I get more granular with Do not disturb mode?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 10:49 AM PST

I am struggling to come up with a system to notify me if I get an on-call text message. I have a Samsung S9 with Android 10.

For background: For my job, I am on-call weekly and need to be notified if an urgent issue comes in. I am notified of urgent issues by text messages sent from an automated ticketing system. The texts never come from the same phone number. I am a heavy sleeper and will miss notifications if it's just a simple blip noise or vibrates for a second.

My solution to this problem was just to make my text notification a song. So it plays long enough to wake me up. my phone is normally on vibrate during the day anyway so not a big deal.

The problem with that is now every little system notification I get is now playing a song.

Ok so let's turn on "Do not disturb" and only allow "Messages". Except for Messages means more than SMS texts. Discord, Facebook.. etc.. And I can't say only allow from a certain contact since the texts always come from a different phone number.

Is there a way I can say only allow notifications from text messages? Are there any apps out there that can do this? I am running out of ideas and can't find a workable solution that doesn't impact the general use of my phone. Any insight or ideas would be awesome. Thanks.

Setting a rooted Android phone as internet gateway in a LAN to share 4G connection without USB tethering or Wi-Fi hotspot (à la Windows' Internet Connection Sharing)

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:45 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm trying to share my LTE internet connection on a home [W]LAN. So far I managed this by tethering my phone via USB on a laptop in the room of the house with the best mobile signal, and then using Windows' Internet Connection Sharing function to make the phone connection available via WiFi to the rest of the LAN. *

In order to avoid needing to have a pc always on, I've been trying fiddling with iptables to obtain something like Windows' ICS directly on my Android phone, but to no avail.

I've been trying to adapt several guides I found on the internet, like this or this, but I'm a complete networking noob and can't figure out why I couldn't get it to work so far.

As far as I could understand, I should need to:

    1. enable ip forwarding: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
    2. masquerade all packets coming from the Wi-Fi (192.168.1.0/24): iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQUERADE
    3. add this route (?): ip route add table rmnet_data1 192.168.1.0/24 dev wlan0

I've set a pc on the LAN to use my phone as a gateway, but I still can't access the internet.

    Some additional info:

    • Phone: Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Global
    • ROM: Resurrection Remix - Android 9 - Rooted

    * note: Mobile signal is awful in every room of my house but one, so I can't use my phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot since I would either have very low Wi-Fi signal on the opposite side of the house, or poor LTE connectivity if I were to put the phone somewhere in the middle of the house. A LTE Wi-Fi router is not an option, either, because I need my SIM card to receive and make phone calls.

Anyone know why android wont let me enter a dNS thats 192.168.X.XXX?

    Hi all.

I am trying to get my phone to connect to my pi hole, which its ip address is 192.168.x.xxx. In android, when I set my DNS, it only gives me the room for x.x.x.x. Anyone know why this is? Is there a workaround?

Issues with multiple Google Pay notifications

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 09:44 AM PST

I just got a new Pixel 4a and I'm having this weird issue where every purchase I make with Google Pay gives me 3 identical notifications. Anyone else have this happen or have an idea if what might cause it?

I originally had the old version of Google Pay installed, but I've uninstalled it and this is still happening. All 3 notifications are coming from the same (newer) app regardless.

    Water in speaker

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:08 AM PST

I was using my Samsung Galaxy A71 and I think I got water in the speaker of the phone. Not much, I think very little, probably a couple of drops. So I dried it immediately with a towel but I still felt it worked well. After I looked on the internet and tried, as some say, to dry the speaker with the hairdryer that I kept far enough away so as not to heat it too much for about 2 minutes. Finally I used an app that is supposed to remove the water. It seems to me that everything is working correctly and I do not seem to hear any changes compared to before it happened, either with a video on Youtube or with a phone call. Do I have to worry about something or not?

    Mobile hotspot

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:05 AM PST

Not sure if this is the right sub but I figured my question would get the most exposure here.

Anyway, awhile back a friend signed my phone into their xfinity account so I could avoid using all my data, and I can connect to any public xfinity hotspot flawlessly, however it and my work laptop are my only connected devices as I don't have wifi at home (my financial situation prevents it) and I'd like to connect my ps4 to the internet.

My problems start here, I only get 2 gigs a month because it's all I can afford, so I don't want to blast through it using my playstation, and my laptops hotspot only broadcasts (?) 5 GHz, but the PlayStation requires 2.4 on my model, and it doesn't accept USB tethering, it requires a lan cable.

I've looked all over and there's nothing I can really do for my laptop, so I'm left with asking a (probably stupid) question about my phone, it's a Moto E4+ and I want to know, is there anything at all I can do short of rooting it that will allow me to use my mobile hotspot with my wifi connection instead of mobile data?

TLDR, I don't have wifi at home and my phone is my only source of internet, and I want to connect my playstation without using all my data, can I do with with the wifi connection I have instead of mobile data?

    GMail Notifications Delay

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:19 AM PST

Part of my job is to manage over 22 000 mobile devices. It's a mix of iPhone, Samsung and Google Pixel devices.

A lot of our Android users are complaining that they are only getting their GMail notifications after unlocking the device whereas the iPhone notifications come in after 5-10 seconds of receiving the email.

We have made sure to disable the App Optimization, Notifications are enabled in the account and since it's happening across multiple devices it clearly is either an Android or GMail coding issue.

Using ADB to disable Doze on the device does fix the issue, but only until the device is restarted so this is not an acceptable fix.

After doing loads of research it seems that this has been an issue on Android for years now, but I couldn't find a permanent fix other than rooting the devices which is not happening.

    Would anyone have any ideas?

Pixel 5 constantly "connected, no internet" on wifi Tried everything I can think.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:10 AM PST

Searched here and Google and didn't find a solutions. /r/googelpixel was useless. I found this which seems similar with no solutions. I found this but my issue started in the past few weeks and P5 isn't noted and been 2-3 updates since those reports of issues. I've seen other older posts with people blaming routers but no resolutions.

Recently my Pixel5 ability to use wifi connection has been ruined. In the past few weeks this issue just happened without any configuration change to my network or the phone. I can't say for certain if this started before or after the Feb 5th update.

    Hardware involved:

    • TPLink Archer A7 with both 2.4 Ghz and 5ghz
    • Pixel 5 with Latest Feb 21 update installed

After a period of time between 10min to 24hr day after connecting to network it will just state "connected no internet" The problem lies 100% with the P5 as its the only piece of hardware on my network having the issue. Nothing else is having a issue on my network. The network has 3 computers, 2 servers, various IOT devices, ipad, iphone, android phones, television.

Steps I've tried to troubleshoot issue:

    • forgotten both my 2.4g and 5g networks and re-added them.
    • used DHCP on router to assign static ip. I've also disabled allowing for automatic ip assign.
    • set both connections to use the device MAC address not random.
    • set both connections to use random MAC address.
    • reboot router (multiple times)
    • reboot phone (multiple times)
    • disabled mobile network data
    • used custom DNS and non custom DNS (used both Cloudflare and google DNS servers)
    • set as metered connection and non-metered connection
    • tried airplane mode with only wifi enabled
    • Data saver on and off
    • Updated router firmware, very last step! This wasn't the initial cause! Being the p5 is the only hardware with the issue it cannot be my router.

After forgetting and reconnect the network it will sometimes work for a limited period of time before it stops again.

TLDR: Pixel 5 (fully up to date) states "connected, no internet" on wifi networks. It's not the router as the P5 is only device on network to have an issue.

    Security: Android vs. iOS

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:23 AM PST

Hi! I'm an Apple user. I own almost everything from Apple. And I love it. But I am kinda getting tired of being so limited by the whole ecosystem. My first phones and tablets were Androids (Kitkat/Lollipop) and I hated it. I still prefer iOS because the navigation feels so much more natural and the OS works sooo smooth.

The last few days I thought about switching to an open-source Android ROM without Google and mostly open source apps (except some apps like Insta and Spotify). It's actually more secure because we can know what the OS is really doing in the background and with my data. But before switching to Android I'd like to ask you some questions since I have never tried the newer Android version since v6. So we have a full app permission system like iOS does... but can I decide which photos I wanna share and can I decide if I wanna share my precise location or just the city I'm located in... I'd even root my phone and install some extra software, no problem. What about Handoff? Am I able to share my clipboard with an Ubuntu system (I'm switching from macOS to Ubuntu or Mint)? Is there an offline voice assistant for Android? (I'm even selling my HomePod and I've disabled Siri)

And Android apps often need access to the files and therefore other apps can see their contents from each other. In iOS, apps get very limited and can only exchange data with apps from the same dev.

I still have soooo many questions. I'd buy me a Google Pixel and flash a custom ROM.

    Lenovo Precision Pen & alternatives

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:11 AM PST

I recently bought the Lenovo tab P11 Pro in Europe. While on.their site, the only accessory available at the time was the keyboard cover. There's a new stylus launched to go with this and the regular P11 called the 'Lenovo Precision Pen 2'. Trying to find this pen is ridiculous. The google link to Lenovos website gives a dead page, there doesn't seem to be any for sale outside some chinese sites and just general information on what technology it uses is slim to nil.

My question is: Does anyone know more about this pen, such as the tech inside? I've read a lot of different types of pens like n-trig, capacitive, EMR etc and I'm finding it difficult to know which technology the tablet and pen have together to help in choosing alternatives too.

Any help in finding one of these pens or reasonably priced alternative would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Samsung Fast Charging

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 10:25 PM PST

I have a samsung s10e, and the wall adapter that came with it isn't in any retail stores that I've seen. I'm hesitant to just buy any random adapter on Amazon or something, because I don't know which ones will charge my phone as fast as the stock one. Not even sure if this would be the right subreddit for this question, but if anyone could recommend a good wall adapter with fast charging or explain how I can tell which ones will have fast charging that would be helpful. I did notice that there were some that looked exactly like my charger on Amazon, but they seemed to be knock offs since they weren't sold by samsung. I don't know why samsung doesn't just sell their stock ones in stores lol.

Multicore packet scheduler in Developer Settings

    Is my battery dead?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 02:08 PM PST

This morning I powered on my Blu g9 android phone. I unlocked it, but it froze before loading the home screen. I held the power button down and it showed the logo and then turned off. Now I can't turn the phone on, and it doesn't appear to charge. I've also tried connecting it to my laptop via USB, but it doesn't show up as a device. I've tried every form of reset, such as volume+power and it isn't working. The phone had no problems before this.

    Recovering a Photo

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 08:36 PM PST

Hey guys, I have a biiig question, at least for me it's big lmao. So I had a bunch of pictures of my girlfriend as a cycling background on my LG V40. We broke up and I deleted the pictures of her from my phone but then we got back together. I was able to find most of them in texts and such but there's a few missing I really want, and for reasons she can't get them to me. HOWEVER they are still my background, it's just that the source image file in my gallery is gone. How would I go about recovering the images, if even possible at all? Thank you so much for your help in advance, and I hope I explained well. If anything is unclear please ask!
