If I change my Play Store region and then buy a gift card from that country as my payment method, will it work?

Asking bc with certain games, the in-game purchases are cheaper in certain countries. I know you're only allowed to change your region once every 365 days.

Also, sorry not sure if this question is appropriate for this sub. If not, I'd appreciate it if someone can direct me to the correct sub.

What does this weird grey app icon mean? I can't click on it and can't delete it. Is it malicious?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:25 PM PST

So I have this Icon on my phone that I don't recognize. http://imgur.com/gallery/6U2OC7O For everyone who can't click, its the android Icon, greyed out, with the instagram icon in the bottom right.

I thought it was some kind of broken shortcut or something but I can't click on it and can't delete it and after rebooting the phone, it is still there.

Can someone tell me what this is and how I get rid of it?

[Android 10] There's some sort of foreign date thing in my notification bar that I'd like to remove.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:57 AM PST

Please see this image for what I mean.

Circled in red is what seems to be the date from an alternate calendar. One that I do not need nor want to be there. Does anyone know how to remove it?

Video editor where I can add music at a specific time instead of adding music over the entire video?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:39 AM PST

My current video editor (Galaxy S9+) allows me to add audio to a video, but if it's a short sound clip it plays continously to no end.

There is no option for me to put a short sound clip and have it end at a specific point.

Basically you can add audio but that's all you can do. No "when" options. Which is what I need. Don't know if any apps do this but the stock video editor doesn't seem to allow it. Thanks

Music "stopping" during native camera usage

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:37 AM PST

I have seen this in forums but can't seem to figure out how to disable it.

I am using the LG Wing but I believe this is an issues with all phones.

We listen to a lot of music through my phone to Bluetooth surround sound. Whenever I want to take a picture or a video the music cuts out during the shutter action and completely if you try to run video.

There has to be a way to disable this easily as other apps using the camera (Facebook, snapchat, etc) continues to let the music play. It is only the native camera app that it does this for.

Thanks for any help turning this off.

Note: I can get into developer settings but can't seem to find anything there either.

Is there any way to make the text selection cursor larger/brighter when in dark mode?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:32 AM PST

I find the selection cursor (the I-beam) very difficult to see in dark mode, because it's darkish blue on a black background, and pretty thin. I'm on a Pixel 4a 5G with Android 11.

    "Bluetooth can't connect" error.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:11 AM PST

I bought my first mid-range phone (Galaxy A41) and everything is great except...

When I pair it with my laptop (Win 10), it pairs successfully, but it shows an error "Bluetooth couldn't connect" when attempting to connect to it.

It can successfully transfer files from and over to the laptop, it's just that it doesn't connect for Audio and Call settings from the phone's device list.

I tried unpairing (both phone/laptop), resetting network settings, hard-resetting the phone - nothing works. My laptop's bluetooth driver is up-to-date.

    Any tips?

    Many thanks.

New handset-- can I use ADB *before* setting-up androidOS?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:28 AM PST

It's been nearly a decade for me of using flip-phones, I remembered it as "Get handset, root, install Cyanogen" and last week bought some generic LG handset ("Journey"), only to find cyanogen was now LineageOS and didn't support my phone. Saw GrapheneOS as an alternative, then found it only covers like 5 phones (all Google-hardware, ironically...) So far as I can tell there's no way for me to put a "non-google'd" OS onto the thing, and thus rooting would be pointless.

BUT - then I found the (AMAZING!!) [Simple apps suite](reddit.com/r/simplemobiletools) and mind=blown. I downloaded everything from their Notes app to their Launcher, SMS and Dialer apps - now I'm ALMOST able to "de-google" this thing :D

Was so stoked with this info last night, went to bed thinking I'd wake, hard-reset the unit, and - before letting google/facebook/etc servers "pick up" on anything, I'll have removed all their software / swapped to Simple aps....then realized the problem: an androidOS handset cannot have its programs stripped til you've got USB-debugging enabled for adb commands, and you cannot enable usb debugging for this until AFTER you "setup" the phone to its home-screen....this REQUIRES you to hit 'Accept' for Google's terms!!!

Any tricks to get around this? Maybe some way of "adb'ing" stuff from a fresh/out-of-box handset that doesn't require getting to the AndroidOS first? Because if I've gotta click "Accept" to google's terms before doing all this, I'm gonna go on a limb and assume their terms include "we've got unlimited access to your device" (paraphased of course but you know what I mean) so, while I'm still going to swap-over to Simple apps for everything, I can't consider it "de-googled" if the handset Accepted a google-policy at startup :/

Thanks a TON for any&all help, getting-past that google-terms-accept at the start (it's the last step before you see your homescreen for the device's 1st time or on reset device, they let you un-check "send diagnostics", "location tracking", but you still have to click Accept, not Next, and that Accept is binding you & the phone to Google....seems trivial to subse

Android Messages- all MMS received are blurry, videos come over as static images

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:25 AM PST

Around the time that Google had the bad carrier services update, all MMS received have been coming in as very blurry, way more than normal MMS compression. Any video sent this way comes in as a static image with a sound clip attached separately. Any ideas on a fix I can try?

    Battery lonegtivity.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:22 AM PST

I have an A50 which is great I'm just confused. See my phone allows me to enable fast charging or disable it. Will enabling it save me more battery or at least help it in the long run? I'm just super confused because obviously it charges longer when its not enabled but if having it disabled saves me battery I'd rather have it disabled.

    Galaxy A30 only cable charging

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:08 AM PST

My phone, Galaxy A30 is recently acting up weird. Whenever I plug in the charger it simply cable charges. Then after lots of restarts and closing up recent apps it all of sudden (not always) fast charges. And now it wasn't even charging on plugging it in. Then after going through that vicious circle of restarts and safe boot up, its fast charging. It is really exhausting. The charger seems fine. What could be the issue?

    1440p Super LCD vs 1080p OLED ?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:44 PM PST

I've had an HTC 10 with 1440p Super LCD for a few years and am considering changing to a Google Pixel 4a, but it is OLED and at 1080p. Is there any noticeable difference between 1080p OLED vs 1440p LCD?

I find that the 1440p LCD is extremely sharp (especially with text) and I want to keep this display quality.

EDIT: Thanks for all your input everyone!

Galaxy phone occasionally makes shutter noise when not in use

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:13 AM PST

It's a few years old now, and for a few months it's been going "click-click beboop" at random. I notice it a couple times a week, never when I'm using it, but once just barely a minute after I put it down. There's no relevant notification, I've no idea what it is, if it's angry because there's not much drive space left or there's chinese spyware trying to photograph my panties or what.

The sound is a very faint "click click", two vaguely shutter-like sounds with the same pitch, and than a descending, sad "beeboop", high pitched and also very faint.

    Thumbnails files

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:57 AM PST

My thumbnails folder has two thumbdata files, each almost 5gb.

My DCIM folder (other than the thumbs) is less than 1gb. This is in the Samsung secure folder and the total space of everything is only about 12gb (plus the nearly 10gb of thumbs).

Why would the thumbs be nearly half the space used by all the apps and media in secure?

I have deleted them. They come back almost immediately. I didn't even notice slowness as it built them, they seemed to appear right away.

SD Card Android/Data Wiped after Android 11 update

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:23 AM PST

    Hi,

    I have a Samsung Galaxy S20

A couple of days ago I received a notification that the One UI 3.0 (Android 11) update was available. So I installed it and thought everything had gone smoothly, but just yesterday I noticed that a few apps had missing data, most importantly, my secret folder app: Gallery Vault.

When I open the Sdcard:Android/Data folder on my phone, it appears empty, but when i open it on my PC I can see the complete folder structure , but every single one of the folders is empty.

I already recovered some data from the cloud and recovered some files with Recuva on my PC, some of the files were recovered as raw data, as a .file format or just weren't completely recovered. And the data from this GalleryVault (which is supposed to be at Android/Data/com.thinkyeah.galleryvault) is the data I care about recovering the most. So, before I place what I recovered back to where it belongs in my SD card and possibly writing over my lost data.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to do?

P.S. GalleryVault encrypts its files and an app that only searches for image/video/audio files will not work as they are not formatted this way.

Galaxy S9 won't charge unless turned off or in safe mode

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:15 PM PST

I've had a Galaxy s9 for around 2 years now, but all of the sudden it wouldn't charge when I plugged it in. I've tried quite a few things I've seen online such as trying different cables/wall ports, charging it via my computer and cleaning the charging port. The only thing I got out of that was a moisture warning that persisted for about 3 and a half hours before the phone finally died. After another attempt at cleaning, the moisture warning disappeared and I was able to charge my phone while it was turned off or on safe mode, albeit rather slowly. However, once I turn safe mode off, the phone still says that I need to connect a charger, and the charging stops.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm just about at my wits end.

Edit: The moisture warning seems to have appeared even when in safe mode, so I don't think I'm able to charge it at all. The moisture warning will not go away even though it had been exposed to absolutely no water whatsoever.

Rooting a Asus MeMo pad hd7 (ME173X) to upgrade android to 5.0

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:23 AM PST

Hello, I recently found my old Asus Memo pad HD7 (ME173x) and I want to upgrade it to atleast Android 5.0 (currently Android 4.2.2).

I did some research and I think I need: 1. To upgrade the drivers? 2. Add custom recovery 3. Flash(?) something?

Like you probably can see above i have no idea what I'm doing. I found a prety long forum on XDA with a couple of files but I don't really understand much of it. So many people give different information (aaaaaghghg).

Can somebody help me get started? Or are there better ways? Thanks in regards.

how change ui on android 10 into something good so we can use this android

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:18 AM PST

    android machine name

    • 'galaxy tab 2019' sm t290
    • android 10
    • one ui 10
    • name on box: 'samsung galaxy tab a kids edition'

To find model name, swipe from top to down > tap gear icon on the upper right > scroll all way down > tab info or about

For Android version > open software information.

have a while back, is first android machine, mom got me machines

    • android tablet
    • ios iphone

it looks liek this whole android thing is a huge mess, so looks first thing i need to do is to change this into a consistent ui

someone say that android doesnt have consistency across their google machines

unlike windows android has a vast variety of customised os such as Samsung has one ui, Huawei has emui, xiomi has miui etc.

and these are all made on Android, each with different stuff and features and if that much is not enough to create diversity in android ecosystem it has versions and I have seen devices running on android 7 in 2020 with latest version being 11,

so there's no uniformity among android devices and you'll have to atleast tell which oem that tablet belongs to.

only this person told us android waas a mess, nobody else helped

'but they didnt tell us how to find name of android machine, maybe you cant on os? is that why?' - answered by someone else in a future post

so it seems that apps can change the ui, so which app to get to do theses

    • how 'swipe left' like on ios to go back - (dunno why swiping to go back dun work, am confused)
    • how show list of apps installed by frequency of use - in text, not icons - so can open that way
    • how to 'minimize' everything like in windows 10
    • how show all windows opened even if minimized like on windows 10 - how to see all tabs/apps that are currently opened? can swipe somehow? or button press?
    • how close everything - (havent learned how ios does this yet)
    • how search play store from tablet without opening any app
    • how search chrome from main screen of phone? with a search bar? dont wanna have to open app - what are steps to do this?
    • android have anything like https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/welcome/ios

after that, then need to get soem good apps

    • app that shows list of apps installed by frequency of use
      • so can open them that way
      • want to make icons into a list of words, dont like icons
    • what app when open shows most recently used note/list? when open auto-goes to most recently used note/list
    • how make all these icons alot smaller like 50% smaller how to do that?
    • any apps to installs that auto-adjust all settings by itself to be best options/settings ?
    • anything else any links helpful to read?
    • ppl say that g translate is bad like 70-90% of the time, are there any actually good dictionary for any 2 languages like english to french, etc
    • best dictionary using very simple words for kids ppl learning english ? or other good helpful ideas
    • know of whats the main not-reddit android support forum on the web to ask stuff? ios site on reddit has been overall much much much helpful than anything android - see now it's cos android is a mess, but nobody even said that except 1 person quoted above

how use android on 10 - which of these options or any options lets you do everythign that you can do on android on windows 10? + is very very easy to setup

how to do things on ios via windows 10 with larger screen? phone screen too small cant do much

is first android machine, mom got me machines

if can find good ui, prob maybe gonna switch ios iphone to an actually good andriod in future

    pls list steps
