backing up and restoring android tv box to a new one?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 01:01 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

so i finally got myself a 2017 shield pro and unfortunately, i am googling without any outcome a simple solution to how backup and restore everything on the new box, i have used a jetstream box for around 2 years and would love to have my kodi and everything copied to shield instead of setting up from scratch.

is there an easy way to do it or should i forget about it all together?

Mi box stutter problem (Stremio and else)

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 01:02 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm using the Mi box 4S and having some stutter everytime I watch a video on Stremio. Just found how to solve this problem and happy to share it.

First, change in resolution settings the display refresh rate to 24 fps which is the same as the original movie.

Second, if you didn't solve it all, go to general settings, activate developers options clicking many times in build number. Go to dev options and tick the box ''Force GPU rendering''

    Try and tell me :)

Google TV CCU + usb c hub not working here

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:40 PM PST

Just got my google TV dongle installed it all and wanted to hardwire it as the WiFi can be patchy even with mesh. Tried my trusted usb-c dock, that comes with ethernet usb ports card reader (and an HDMI port) , the dock works fine on the switch and my 2in1 laptop but on the google TV I get nothing, the power passthru works fine but everything else doesn't. Switch on developer tools to see if there might be an option to trigger but I am non the wiser. Neither of the usb ports works (tried with mouse, keyboard and a webcam) and the ethernet port lights up but the network options only show the WiFi. Am I missing something or am I sol with my dock? Thanks

Manually setup adopted storage for troublesome devices.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 05:16 PM PST

I wrote this originally for the Dynalink Android TV box but I think other boxes can work using this method also, (android 10+)

so after messing with trying to get adopted storage working for a few hours and trying about 30 different drives and sdcards and other types of storage (errors included unsupported usb drive, cannot format, device safely ejected, there is an issue click to fix ..etc)

I ended up just doing it manually from adb and eventually got it working, this should work with any drive / sdcard as long as it's recognized by the system..

Do the next steps at own risk.

Insert your usb drive (as long as its recognized) (note the following will erase the storage you are trying to use.)

    in adb shell type

(wait about 5 seconds before each command, don't just copy and paste!).

    sm list-disks

find your drive in my case it was Disk8,0

    sm has-adoptable true

    sm set-force-adoptable on

    sm partition disk:8,0 public

    sm partition disk:8,0 private

    sm list-volumes

in my case private:8,2 unmountable (note if you don't see "private:8,2 unmountable", then repeat the two partition commands above) , once it shows up continue.

    sm format private:8,2

    sm set-force-adoptable off

    sm set-force-adoptable on

    done.

    reboot

Go to settings - Device preferences - storage and you should now see your drive under device storage - click on USB Drive - now you can click Migrate data to this storage and enjoy having all the space you need :)...

    Hope this helps.

I have tried this on 4 sdcards and it worked on every one 8gb, 16gb, 32gb and a 64gb, I have not tried this on USB flash drives or actual hard drives but I assume it will work too.

    Image

    Edit:

I did find one bug when you put the device into standby mode (power button), after about 5 or 10 minutes it goes into a deep sleep it turns the device off (including usb accessories) you can tell because the red light on the box will shut off,

when the device wakes it doesn't re-connect the drive (although it looks connected, it's not) and this can cause some issues, replugging drive or rebooting is a quick fix, so after messing with this for awhile now this box seems to ignore most screen on and wakelock apps, but so far the only solution(s) are these.

    1. I found a app called wakelock-revamp so far it keeps the device awake after pressing power.
    2. Don't turn device off using power button or screensaver
    3. Maybe some automated tool like tasker can run sm set-force-adoptable on , on device wake? this forces the system to remount the storage....

so far option 1 is working the best for me, but I will try to find more alternatives.

Should I use my laptop or get a Chromecast?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:07 PM PST

I have a laptop with a broken screen, but anything else works. Now I have to decide if I buy a new ssd to use the laptop or buy a Chromecast.

I just want to use it to stream YouTube, netflix, prime video, steam link and maybe some random videos.

What it's the best option? Spend the money to use the laptop or a Chromecast?

Voice Input instead of online keyboard for search in streaming app

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 08:54 PM PST

I'm coming from Apple TV where you have the option to use voice input in any input field.. specifically the search field for any streaming app (netflix, disney+, prime etc).

I have switched to a Google TV which is great but I can only seem to use voice input for Google Assistant which has the ability to include netflix in it's results but not for any other of my apps.

Does Google/Android TV support voice input inside of any app like the Apple TV or is it only for Google Assistant?

    Thanks!

Remote control needed - anything out there that fits the bill?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 11:01 AM PST

Hi.. so I have quite a specific set of requirements. I need a remote control with:

    • Voice input (Mic, and mic button)
    • Numbers (0-9)
    • Infrared volume control and mute that does not require toggling to (this one's impossible for me to find anywhere)
    • 2.4ghz with a dongle or Bluetooth
    • Android and firestick compatible

    Bonus extras:

    • Runs off normal AA/AAA batteries
    • No airmouse
    • Cheap

    Any ideas?

    Youtube TV issues

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 04:20 PM PST

    Hello,

    I have a 65 inch Sony XBR-65X850C.

Looking to cancel my cox cable and get youtube tv. Is there a way to set the TV shortcut button on the remote (model RMT-TX100U) or any other button on the remote to jump to live youtube tv?

My parents are both older, really hard to teach them to enter menus, apps and select youtube TV, etc

Ideally, TV turns on and youtube tv is already on as a deafult.

    Thanks

Is there any way to activate Dolby Vision on a device with the CPU supporting it?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:23 PM PST

I bought an android box rebranded by my satellite TV provider. It's got Amlogic S905X2 so it should support Dolby Vision. There is even an option for Dolby Vision in advanced options but it's greyed out. I guess my provider didn't want to pay for the licence or something. Is it possible to somehow bypass these options?

It's hard to say exactly which model I have but it's similar to Skyworth Binge Android TV box except mine supports Netflix and has 16GB of built-in memory.
