Old Person Buying 1st Smartphone -- question about internet usage

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 06:38 AM PST

Sorry for the noob question. I'm old and I've never owned a smartphone. I want to buy an Android to connect with my young nieces. They love Snapchat.

I have unlimited internet on my home computer.

I think I can connect my smartphone to my home internet Wifi and then I won't have to buy a data plan for my phone.

    Is that correct?

I’m an Apple guy trying to help an Android rookie over Whatsapp messenger

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 11:31 AM PST

Hello everyone I switched to Apple since 2015 and not really familiar with Android's recent features. I have an old friend overseas who is solely relied on me for his IT stuff and just recently bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S. He has two questions that I'm unable to find proper answers for:

1- How backup/restore works in Android? In comparison, in Apple we simply connect iPhone to a computer and iTunes backs up "everything" (other than apps username/password) to the computer. We can restore that backup to any other iPhone to have an identical iPhone as the first one. It's also possible to backup/restore to/from iCloud but usually needs buying extra cloud storage. In Android (our case Xiaomi) I'm unable to find such a one step backup/restore solution. There is Google Drive app, Android's internal backup settings and also Xiaomi iCloud backup/restore feature. I'm totally lost that which one does what.

2- User prefers to receive SMS for two factor authentication. Seems Google is decommissioning this feature and replaces it with login notification in user's other Android device connected to the same Google account. The problem is user doesn't want to keep his old Android phone just for 2FA. I don't know what would happen if user factor reset and sell his only other Android device. Is Google going to use SMS for 2FA because there is no second connected device to his account?

My play store seems completely fucked. Can't download, can't update. Have tried a few fixes already, with no luck. Help please!

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 10:35 AM PST

So since this past weekend my banking app required an update. When I tried, it never moved past "pending". Tried uninstalling and then re downloading, but it wouldn't download. I've since tried clearing the cache of the play store app, tried deleting and then reinstalling the play store app, nothing. This is my first time running into this after nearly a decade of android use. Am I completely screwed?

Can I turn on my mobile data from an external device?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:59 PM PST

I dropped my phone at the beach near the water earlier this morning. Of course, I turned off my data and wifi last night and didn't remember to turn them back on this am. My phone is still on because calls are going through, but I'm 90% sure it is in the water so calling it isn't going to help any. If I can somehow turn my mobile data on from my computer or another device, I can easily pinpoint the location of my phone and retrieve it.

Some useful info: my location, Bluetooth, data, and Wi-Fi are all off, Verizon is my provider, I am connected to Verizon Smart Family, and I have a google and Samsung account and am logged in to both on my phone.

Pls share any info or tips you have!!

Android compability with Playstation 5 DualSense controller

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:41 PM PST

Hello there, I'd like to ask you if anyone have the latest PlayStation 5 DualSense controller and tried to pair it with (in my case) Samsung Galaxy s20+, as it looks very weird. When I enter Call of Duty Mobile, I'm literally able to only move using left trigger, when I use L2/R2 button, the character is rotating around it's axis and looking max down or max up depending on used button... for games like Genshin Impact I'm totally unable to use controller in game, but for Black Desert Mobile, the UI is covered with Xbox controller's icons, not all skills are usable and it's so confising. I've just tried my previous phone, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and it works perfectly fine for all the mentioned games.

I'd like to mention, that on S20+ I have the latest available in EU updates installed and I wasn't able to find similar info on the internet.

I don't know what to think about it... maybe some of you have the same experience and would like to share :)

    Thank you in advance.

    Anti-malware

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:40 PM PST

I'm a ling time iPhone user trying out an Android phone and it looks like I'll be sticking with it. I never really thought about malware on the iPhone, not because I think its more secure, but because of the way I used it, I just didn't have any issues. Does the typical Android user install anti-malware? Does it work? I see the same big names in the play store that are familiar from Windows. Are they safe or are the data collection programs in disguise?

Suddenly some app icons changed to grey android symbols, cannot open those apps, cannot reinstall them.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 12:10 PM PST

I turned my phone on one day to discover about 30% of my apps no longer had their logos but instead had a green android robot logo. The app names have changed to things like com.waze.frema . I restarted my phone and these logos turned grey. One of these apps is Netflix, I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall but is says it is unable to install it. Cleared the cache of Google play store. Took out and put back in the SD card. I have a Motorola Moto g7 power on android version 10. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Paying with credit and debit cards using nfc

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 11:31 AM PST

Basically, I want to pay with nfc but samsung pay isn't available in my country (and even if it was I have a rooted s8) and google pay isn't available too. Is there any app that I can use that's safe and my card details wont be leaked or it doesn't have major safety issues? Also it will be a bonus if I can use it on my galaxy watch but I dont really care about it, though it would be useful.

Please suggest a podcast app. Not Podcast Addict.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:45 PM PST

PA has a bug that causes other audio to play silently over Bluetooth. For instance, when I'm on a run Spotify will allow the running app to play audio alerts periodically. PA will not allow that. Same for Telegram and Whatsapp audio messages, which I get a lot of. I have to kill PA to listen to them over BT.

Dev says it's not a bug.

Anyway, paid is fine. Just looking for a solid podcast app that isn't PA.

Google Play Services/MicroG battery drain on LineageOS 17.1 for S9

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 11:04 AM PST

    I made a post previously: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/jo3mte/crazy_battery_drain_on_s9_los_171_likely_google/

Unfortunately, nothing came of it. I recently installed an app called BetterBatteryStats that offers more insight regarding battery usage. In the Alarms menu this is what came up: https://imgur.com/a/MDKA90y

It seems that Google Play Services and/or MicroG are causing the battery drain. So far I've tried to clear Play Services' cache, uninstalled updates and tried the beta. I also tried turning battery optimization on for MicroG and even removing it but nothing helped.

I really don't want to lose Google apps so running Android without Google apps is not a choice for me. If someone has any idea what else I can try, please let me know.

    Decommissioned tablet

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 09:58 AM PST

My company recently switched to handheld android scanners from Samsung tablets for business apps. I was given an old tablet for personal use. It used a program called mobicontrol for corporate control. I was present for the software removal by entering an admin password to access settings then doing a factory reset. I was told it was back to new, out of the box. Is it that simple? I don't want to get in trouble later on...

Wifi and Bluetooth suddenly stopped working on Galaxy J7

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 03:48 AM PST

As the title says my wifi and bluetooth suddenly stopped working. My Wifi will not turn on at all, the icon wont turn blue and I can even access most of the advanced options as they are all greyed out. Same for my bluetooth. I tried soft reset, resetting both the wifi and bluetooth settings in the network options. Deleting my cashe partition, nothing has worked. I was using PDA net at the time and figured that might be the problem. Uninstalled it, reset network, soft reset after and nothing. I got the bluetooth to turn on for about a minute and connect to my headset before is started going crazy and just began turning on and off by itself, I manually turned it off and now again it wont turn on. This is driving me crazy, any help short of a factory reset is appreciated.

How to recover deleted Samsung messages?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 03:42 AM PST

I didn't know until today that this is in Samsung settings: "Delete the oldest message when the maximum number of text (1000) messages has been exceeded"

Today when I found that in settings- I clicked on the button and I turned that off.

I lost some of my old messages because of this. Is there a way to recover my deleted messages?

The phone is Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge by the way. I got a new phone last month and I wanted to check my old phone (Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge) for important old messages.

This makes me angry. They shouldn't have this feature set in the "ON" position when someone buys the phone. And they could have gave automatic warnings if I am near the 1000 message limit so I won't lose my old messages.

How to read thumbdata files in .thumbnails folder?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 09:33 AM PST

I have a friend who has recently lost a lot of photos due to a failed MTP file transfer, but low-resolution copies might exist in the /storage/emulated/0/.thumbnails/.thumbdata-6.0_13 file, which is around 24 MB in size. I am not sure what the file name numbers mean.

How can the content of these thumb data files be read?

Can't send or receive text messages from other android phones when I don't have WiFi

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 09:05 AM PST

I have a Moto Z3 play with Android 9. I've noticed that when I text people who also have android phones, the text doesn't go through until I'm somewhere with wifi. I have a data plan and can access the internet when I'm out and about, so don't understand why this would be. I also can send and receive texts with friends who have Apple devices at all times.

when I don't have wifi, sometimes I see that the text is 'sending' for a long time. I can tap on the message and chose to "send as SMS" and it will send the text, but the speech bubble is a different color. I cannot receive any tests this way, and cannot send or receive pictures when I don't have wifi.

any ideas why this would be? Thanks in advance!

    Android Lock screen

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 08:44 AM PST

My stepson passed away from a drug overdose. He thought he was getting heroin when he actually got fentanyl. The police have his phone (Samsung Galaxy S9) and a warrant for the records, but the cell phone provider only keeps texts for 2 days. The police say they can't get text messages off the phone because we can't figure out the 4 digit lock screen code. Is there any way to get the phone unlocked without trying all 10,000 number combinations? Or at least get the text messages off the phone?

    Fix for casting unusual resolution

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 08:43 AM PST

Many phones these days have a non-standard resolution, so when you mirror your screen to a Chromecast or Fire Stick you end up with huge black borders that hinder the picture quality.

Is there an easy way to screen mirror in standard resolutions like 1080p without rooting the phone or connecting it a PC to change resolution every time?

Not always getting text notifications on samsung galaxy s8

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 07:21 AM PST

Usually when I get a text my phone makes a noise and I'll get a notification as expected. I'll read the text and then afterward click the lock button to turn off the screen. At this point if I get another text from the same person and without me using my phone for anything the phone will silently have the screen light up to show the text and then the screen will turn off after a few seconds. This doesn't leave a notification or anything else to tell me that I got a text. It just does that and assumes that I saw the text I guess. If my phone isn't in my line of sight I will have no idea that I got a text until I happen to manually go into the text message app.

I've had so many situations where I'll ask someone a question and I will think I never got a response, go into the messaging app a day later to ask why they are ignoring me and see that 2 minutes after I asked them they responded and now they think I've ignored them for a day.

This only happens with the default built in text messaging app. I have never had an issue with other apps like Discord and Facebook messenger. There must be some weird setting that is causing this but I can't figure out which. My phone wasn't always like this either, I think some system update introduced this months ago and I'm only starting to notice it now.
