Google TV or Mi Box S

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 03:12 AM PDT

Hi, I've been waiting for new chromecast being presented. Now I'm wondering if it is better than Mi Box S My thoughts: 1. Google chromecast is not available yet in Poland, once it will be, probably will be more pricy as somebody have to import it to country 2. When it comes to specs, it isn't any better, am I right? 3. I saw some where that new UI will be available in Mi Box S in the future

What are your thought? Am I missing something? May be there is a third option? Or maybe you know a way to buy new chromecast in Poland (it is not on Amazon for example)

Is it possible to extract this APK and try to run it on an older android tv device?

This is the apk in question, seems to me like it might be the launcher

If anyone wants to know, the new chromecast with google TV can connect to bluetooth speakers.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:01 AM PDT

I found myself in a situation where I was plugging this into my computer monitor and realized I didn't have an aux port. The speaker I was going to feed it into does have bluetooth and after getting everything all set up on the chromecast I found the option to connect to bluetooth accessories.

Maybe this is common knowledge but I thought maybe this might be helpful to know if someone is in a similar situation.

Problems with new Chromecast w/GoogleTV. Glitching on the screen, and other observations

Problems with new Chromecast w/GoogleTV. Glitching on the screen, and other observations

Had it lass than 12 hours now, so far I am bummed, wondering if I got a lemon or if anyone else is seeing this:

I have this random line of white pixels glitching across the screen whenever I play video (look at screenshots, just under the captions). It mostly happens in Netflix but I have seen it pop up in other apps like Prime as well. I tried changing HDMI ports, refresh rates, even enabling or disabling Dolby Vision on my TV...nothing fixes it. It happens at random times, and at random places across the screen. Very distracting. I was able to grab a screenshot, the line literally appears for a fraction of a second. Anyone else seeing something like this? I have a Vizio Quantum TV in case that helps. I wonder if this is hardware or Software related.

    Other observations/gripes:

    • On the "For You" tab, the list of Apps is exactly the same as the list on the "Apps" tab. I can change the order, but can't make a different order to select the # of apps that appear there other than the same as the Apps screen. Why have the exact same list in both places? I would have preferred the list on the For You tab to be more customizable, like the top row of the old AndroidTV Launcher
    • Live tab does not appear with Hulu Live (I expected this, just wished that it supported more than just YTTV)
    • No real multi-user support. I see my Google avatar in the top right corner. I added my family Google Accounts and if I click my photo I can see the other accounts, but there is no way to "switch" to them. No idea why they are able to be added if they don't do anything.
    • No Peacock support (Yet I assume?). I can add the app and play videos, but they aren't integrated into the GoogleTV experience.
    • Can the Watchlist track episodes watched? I couldn't find a way to do this.

Overall I am less impressed than I thought I would be. Still playing with it.

Can Dolby Vision Be Turned Off On New Chromecast With Google TV?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:27 AM PDT

I've been told that there is an option on the Nvidia Shield to turn off Dolby Vision so that it outputs only HDR 10 . Does anyone know if this same option is available on the new Chromecast With Google TV?

Google TV vs Android TV: my opinion

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:26 AM PDT

I've had multiple android set top boxes over the years ranging from MINIX boxes to Nvidia shield TV boxes. Yesterday I got the new Chromecast with Google TV. Maybe it's my years of experience with Android TV versus my lack of time with Google TV, but I find the latter harder to navigate. Personally I feel like Google TV should have an area dedicated to my purchases and my library of movies. None of the recommendations are even similar to what I'm currently watching or my history. I think that UI looks cool but I'm not sure if the user experience is as good as Android TV.

Accidental Google home request while using Chromecast with Google TV - told Google to cancel and it turned the TV off

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:20 AM PDT

So yesterday I was watching YouTube TV and on the show a character said "OK Google play..." and my Google Home Hub heard it and started playing music while we were watching the show. I told Google to cancel to stop that request and it stopped the show and turned the TV off. Any idea how to keep this from happening? It was quite annoying lol.

    Hisense 65H6570G

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:17 AM PDT

Heads up before anyone buys the Hisense 65H6570G or any TV on it's family. Unfortunately you will not be able to use a USB stick it HDD for expanded storage. The option to format the device as internal storage is listed in the menu but the TV will always end up showing the formatted storage as having 0 bytes available and the Internal storage size will never change. It also does not look as if Hisense will be working to fix the issue so go ahead and ignore the part on the box about being able to use 4000+ apps and games.

Anyone with a sizable Android games collection knows that some of the best games on the platform are 2+ Gigs. Keep in mind that you only have 4 Gigs of storage available to you. Outside of the flawed implementation of Android TV, the device has a great picture. I may need to root this TV soon if possible. Currently the alternative options kinda suck. I don't want to have to navigate a Web OS or Roku menu just to get to a Android TV device that's connected. It's the whole damn reason for buying a TV with Android TV built in. -I know, first world problems. I'll keep pressing Hisense and see if someone with some sense will change their mind.

Supported streaming services for the new Google TV

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 03:47 AM PDT

I was lucky enough to snag what seems to be the only available Chromecast with Google TV that was available in my entire area yesterday. In my short time with it, I have found the list of streaming services that the new Google TV can actually suggest from and deeplink with to be a bit misleading (or at least not fully operational yet) The list on the new website suggests that streaming services like Peacock and EPIXNow would be supported as being able to suggest titles from and include them in the "continue watching" list. Those don't actually appear to be supported services. Further, the device itself has a setting showing that Showtime is a linkable service, yet it very clearly it's not. (I searched for "The Comey Rule" for example) Titles that are available for me within the Showtime app do show up in the Assistant search, but they do not allow one to play from within the listing (as would be available for other services) so despite my Showtime account being "linked" the device doesn't seem to care. (I find this particular inconsistency even more ironic considering Showtime is the service that seemed to be the most aggressive in showing up in my "play next" line on regular Android TV)

From what I can tell after a few hours of heavy use, the streaming services that DO actually show up and deeplink with the new Google TV are: *Netflix *Hulu *YouTube TV (This works especially well with shows that are saved to ones "DVR" within YouTubeTV -- no commercials -- but they have surprisingly good VOD mivie coverage without commercials also. I was impressed. But it should be noted that several of the suggestions I got from YouTube TV ended up being VOD shows that stuck me with commercials too ) *Disney+ *HBOMax *STARZ *Amazon (no differentiation between videos included with Prime vs those that must be purchased vs those only available within a Prime "Channel" like PBS or Sundance though... So it's not as helpful when you see a show is available and open it only to discover you still need to pay for it) *Sling TV *Google TV (what I suppose would have been Play Movies yesterday) *CBS All Access

I'm not sure what we are calling these apps that are supported. But those are the ones that work consistently.

I've read some places that Google is going to be "adding more" but I've not seen that anywhere other than here in threads. Has there been actual word from Google saying they are continuing to add? Do we know the list of services that they specifically have in the pipeline?

Which services do you feel you'd want to see added next?

Does the new Chromecast supports Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital conversion?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 04:06 PM PDT

To be able to verify this with Netflix, the device MUST be connected to a tv WITHOUT Dolby Digital Plus decoding by HDMI (2016 models and earlier), that is, it must be a TV with ONLY Dolby Digital decoding by HDMI or even an old receiver with only Dolby Digital decoding.

If you see the 5.1 logo on any movie or TV show, then the conversion is available.

Android TV Chromecast Built-in and Laptop Streaming

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 10:16 PM PDT

Hi, I have a very basic question that I surprisingly haven't been able to answer despite 2 hours of google searches.

I now have an AT&T cable package that is an Android TV with chromecast built-in. I am able to easily stream content from my android phone/tablet to my TV, but when on the Chrome browser on my laptop and select the cast icon, it says "no devices found" despite being inches away from my TV.

All I want to know is if this chromecast built-in feature on my AT&T box supports laptop streaming, or if it is exclusively for android devices?
