    Weekly Questions Thread - October 19, 2020

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 03:56 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Is there API to work with user's apps library?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 07:34 AM PDT

There are many apps that can manage apps that currently installed on device. But I haven't found a single app in Google's Play store that can manage user's apps library (accessed via "My apps & games -> Library" in Play Store app). By "manage" I mean view, sort, filter. Play Store app can only show these apps in one list and sort it by alphabet or installed date.

You can view your library in the web here. But without any means to sort it or filter.

I wasn't been able to find an API for accessing this library. I mostly get results of code libraries, may be it's just that I can't google well enough?

    Support in-app updates

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 04:57 AM PDT

Don't know if this is the place but anyone played with in-app updates. For testing they say on step 3 On the test device, only click the internal app-sharing link for the updated version of your app and do not install. Why is this step necessary and should I suppose when I upload it to prod that users will click on the app page and not click update to be shown this dialog?

What is the best way to make a website version of my android app that has 40k active users

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:25 PM PDT

I have an android app with 40k active users and i am using Cloud Firestore now for the app

I decided to make a website version of the app but I'm not sure how to do it

I am not a developer (i will hire someone to do it for me )

I am not earning much from the app so i am not looking for something expensive

So what do you guys recommend ?

I am thinking of firebase hosting or Wordpress with bluehost. and i know nothing about hosting services

    Thanks an advance

When is the best time/day to submit an update to Google Play?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:03 AM PDT

I have read a couple of posts before that stated Wednesday is the best option for Google Play and Monday is the best for App Store. But these posts were a couple of years old.

For 2020, which day of the week is the best for posting an update for high visibility and optimum downloads? Please share your experiences.

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:07 AM PDT

Hello, I just bought a course on udemy for android development. However, I dont have much time at all as I work 12 hours a day 6 days a week. How much time do you think I should I put into studying, in order to effectively progress as quickly as possible?
