Simplest way to display bitrate and codecs of content being watched?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 04:00 AM PDT

On the Amazon Firestick, this is super easy, you just enable the Developer Tools Menu and it shows you what the input bitrate is for both the video and audio, as well as what video and audio codecs are being used.

What is the easiest way to do this on Android TV? I'm using Android 9 Pie on a 2019 Sony 950G.

Casting Vimeo OTT to Android TV

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:55 AM PDT

I currently have a paid subscriptions to one of that uses Vimeo OTT and I'm having trouble in trying to play it on my TCL Android TV. I read that there was once a iOS app and Android TV app for Vimeo OTT but it was discontinued. Is there a way to cast it like via chromecast or any other way using my iPhone? Or are there other ways to access it directly from the android tv like the vimeo app rather than the browser?

Mi Stick TV, support usb keyboard? side load apk?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:58 PM PDT

im planning to buy Mi TV Stick, however, i checked the spec anywhere, it doesnt mention anything about the presence of the USB ports, or do i missed something? afaik, the remote provided only have basic navigation button, no full qwerty key.

the reason i need usb keyboard (wireless) is the ease of typing the search terms, or dial the channel number for my IPTV apps directly instead of scrolling through the channel list.

does apk side load works too? ive been wonder about that too.

Parent-friendly Setup: TiVo Stream 4K vs AirTV Mini

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:36 PM PDT

I am motivating my parents to fully cut the cord. We have two TVs, and are looking to use Sling as our "Live TV" service, though we do have Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus and Kanopy. Given that, which device would recommend, the TiVo Stream 4K, or AirTV Mini (or other).

Ease-of-use is the foremost concern, so voice control is a must. I've though about using the Roku or Fire-stick, but given they will be using Sling it seems less integrated as the other two.

TiVo Stream 4K seems great, but OTA Local TV is a priority, and it seems like that is not integrated in their guide, so it would be a hassle to switch between (they can't "live" in one place). On the other hand, it seems more logically consistent to say "Use Sling for Live TV, and Reelgood or Justwatch for on-demand needs".

The tech specs seem identical to each other, so I am not sure which would be best. TiVo Stream would save us $50 in setup costs. Am leaning AirTV mini because of it's integration with Sling, though the extra channels on TiVo would be nice.

    Thanks for any feedback.

How to prevent Philips Android TV to enter deep sleep over night?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:52 AM PDT

Cant figure out how to force my TV to keep running all the time. When I turn it of during day, it wakes later almost immediately, usually directly in app I used last. That is perfect and desired. But trying same next day (after night), it seems that TV has gone to some form of deeper sleep or somehow resets all running apps/processes. So next day it is starting back in TV mode (which I never use, doesnt even have antenna connected). I have to switch back to Android Launcher, all apps are closed and starting from scratch.

It seems that next day it even disappears from network, there is no Chromecast to cast on. I have to turn TV on to make it visible and available again. Its very hard to troubleshoot this as it seems that reset is done during night, never happened in daytime. So I cant repeat it by myself and have to wait till next day. Really annoying.

TV is connected to internet by Ethernet, gets same IP every time. Updated to latest fw from 15.6.2020.

All power save features are disabled, si double-checked:
    Settings>Eco settings>Switch off timer = 0 (disabled)
Settings>Eco settings>Energy savings = OFF (but doubt that it has anything with sleep)
Settings>Wireless and networks>Wired or wifi>Switch on with wifi = ON
Settings>Wireless and networks>Wired or wifi>Switch on with Chromecast = ON

A mapping app for Sony Android TVs to use remote buttons for system functions

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:06 PM PDT

I'm trying to map remote buttons like channel up/down to increase or decrease my TV brightness on the Sony x900f, but not sure if it's possible. I have button mapper and I added the function but it does nothing as I guess it only applies to android (phone) brightness. Would this be possible with some app?

Phillips tv YouTube will not log in

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:16 AM PDT

So yesterday night my youtube app reset and deleted both the google accounts saved on it. This happens sometimes but normally is a quick fix to log back in. This time I have been unable to get back on. I have tried to login on my phone via the YouTube.com/activate code and through my tv. Neither works. On my phone it will say i have successfully connected but on the tv it say "something went wrong sign in failed" and then prompts me to try again.

Things I have tried -Unplugging the tv -Restarting the tv -Uninstalling and reinstalling the YouTube app -Clearing the cache/data

Does anyone know how to fix this?

About "Wake on LAN" on Android TV devices

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:39 AM PDT

Back in 2017, when I got my first Android TV device (original Xiaomi Mi Box or MIBOX3), I made a bug report at Issue Tracker website on 09/21/17 because the device didn't "wake up" by using the "Chromecast Built-in".

On the next day, they replied by closing the report as "Won't Fix (Intended Behavior)" along with this message: "Thanks for reporting the issue. This feature is not officially supported by us yet and our team is working on it. However, there are few OEM's support from their side. We are not sure whether Xiaomi Mi Box supports or not. We would recommend you to check with Xiaomi Mi Box technical support team on this"

It's been 1080 days, and the "Wake on LAN" feature is still not widely available on ALL Android TV devices, so, what I request to all of you is to go that Issue Tracker report to put more pressure on Google about this so needed feature. Remember, the more people reply, the merrier.

    Thanks in advance.

    General discussion about OS responsiveness.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:06 PM PDT

Looking at buying a Sony Bravia with Android TV later this year and was curious how well the OS responds on better quality TVs. I bought a small TCL tv that runs Android TV and have noticed a general delayed response, mostly to what I assume is the hardware it's running on.
