Change the Overview screen (Recents screen)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:21 AM PDT

Hi guys, I am creating an android launcher and I wonder, how is it possible to change the Overview screen?

I know the home button can be bound to an app and that creates the launcher, is it possible to bind the overview button too?

I have found one article about it, but no further information.

Best online courses would you recommend?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:42 AM PDT

I am going to take this course, but I feel kinda hesitant since it says Mobile App Development not Android.

Background: I know python, you could say I'm an intermediate, and a little bit of C.

    Thanks in advance

Guide/order of concepts to understand Recyclerview in Android?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:44 PM PDT

I started to learn Recyclerview in Kotlin and I see there are so many things to take care about, I'm new programming so I'm trying to figure out concepts like inflate, adapters, inheritance, etc.

Can you suggest an order of things to understand and use Recyclerviews?

    Optimization Tips Please?!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 07:22 AM PDT

Hey awesome fellow devs. So the app I've been working on just always lags on scroll, using a tablayout with 4 fragments in viewpager, all fetching data online with the use of retrofit and image processing by glide (along with volley and Picasso...is it a good idea to use several libraries that do the same thing) I've used several optimization tips I've found online for recyclerviews like drawing cache, use of constraints and coordinator layouts and so on. If anyone has any helpful tips or advice I would really appreciate cause I'm kind of stomped

    Hi everyone,

I have a question. I'm an editor of a newsletter that is dedicated to the last developments in machine learning. A lot of our subscribers are data scientists but I also noticed that a lot of software engineers and developers started to sign up recently. Would you be so kind to check it and give me your feedback about how such newsletter might be useful for you?

Here is a link to the weekly free newsletter:

Multiple XML layouts for different screens or a more programmatically oriented approach?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 03:43 PM PDT

I'm doing a pet/ demo app and have been implementing a more programmatic UI resizing approach by using DisplayMetrics instead of the good ol' 600 XML layouts approach. Currently it's just an experiment but I'm trying to see how it goes in order to decide my future approach.

I've found dealing with the Android's View class to be annoying, as it usually is. Most of the stuff seems to be an obvious afterthought and makes the code unnecessarily boilerplatey, but I think I still prefer it over creating many different layouts.

And yes If you were to add that a well made ConstraintLayout takes care of a lot of issues by itself, I would agree however I still find some minor niggles with that approach.

I'm curious to hear what are your thoughts and experiences are on the matter.

How much bigger should layout elements (text, icons...) be on a tablet compared to a phone? How much more dp (%-wise)?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:53 PM PDT

Example: if I have a button that looks good on a small screen device at 50x50 dp, by how much should I increase it to also look somewhat decent on large screen devices (tablets)?

Question regarding "Donation" buttons and possible monetization of my app

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:28 PM PDT

    Hello,

So I had been planning to make my app free, with no ads, but include a button that opens up my Ko-Fi page in the users web browser. However, there seems to be a number of threads here, some of which say it's okay so long as it's not done in the app itself, and others that say it's not allowed. So I'm wondering what the actual rulings on this is, as I couldn't seem to find the specific policies on this.

The main reason I wanted to go free, but have a donation button, is that my plan on advertising was to post on relevant forums and boards, reddit included, and some of these places only allow advertising if the product is free. So I'm unsure of what to do if I can't include a donation button. I'm fairly sure I'd only get a handful of downloads if I offer it for free, and I can't imagine the percentage drop of users if I were to make it paid only.

Any advice or clarification would be extremely appreciated!

How does so many apps that let you download and listen to mp3s are allowed on Google Play?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:17 AM PDT

There are tons of music apps in Music&Audio category on Google Play that let you download and listen mp3s. In their screenshots, they act like they only allow royalty free music but that's not true at all. I'm pretty sure these apps don't have the necessary licenses. A lot of them has millions of downloads and all of them has the same type of template-ish look.

Is there a loophole for these apps or is Google just ignoring them?

What apps would you recommend me reference for best practices?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:53 AM PDT

I have about a year under my belt making apps and I am doing my best to follow Google's guidelines. I found the Google IO app on Github, which is far more detailed than any videos or tutorials I followed. It's actually quite intimidating, but I'm taking it slow going through the code trying to learn why they do things the way they do. Are there any other apps you would recommend for referencing?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:44 PM PDT

Previously my app was showing ads from admob ,but now it's not showing ads.

Even on Google admob dashboard their is no warning or anything else from Google.

What can be the possible cause ?

What are the ways to correct it?
