Android Questions: Backing Up Phone Data?

Android Questions: Backing Up Phone Data?

    Backing Up Phone Data?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:28 AM PDT

Apologies in advance, because this is probably going to seem like a clueless question to many people. But here goes:

A few months ago, I had a phone disaster (dropped it in the sink), and it was bricked. I thought I had lost everything, but when I put my SIM card in my new phone, I found that a considerable amount of my data was transferred to the new phone (text messages, contacts, WhatsApp messages, installed apps, etc.) Things like photos, videos, music, etc. were gone, however. I'll note that on both the old (Huawei) and new (Moto) phones, I was asked to use a Google account in order to complete the set-up, and used the same account from the old phone on the new phone.

But my question is: how do I check where and if my data is being backed up? When I did the set up for the new phone, I thought I had chosen to have everything backed up to the google drive associated with my google account - but checking drive, there is nothing there from my phone. Also, I have no idea how one would check where SMS's or photos or WhatsApp messages/data are being backed up (if at all); I've tried to go through all the various options in "Settings," but I don't see this sort of information.

I'm pretty stupid with technology, but if anyone has any easy-to-understand, straightforward info/tips/etc., I'd be happy to hear from you! Thanks.

Can we force an app/game to run in fullscreen for borderless phones?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:04 PM PDT

So I have this game, but when I run it, it only opens in a set dimension, which gives me the ugly black bars. Is there a way around this? Thanks in advance

Do preinstalled apps still get updates if you're not logged in to Google Play?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:22 AM PDT

There were news last year that Google would allow updating of preinstalled apps even when you're not logged in to Google Play, e.g. https://www.androidheadlines.com/2019/02/pre-installed-android-apps-update-google.html#

What happened to this announcement? Does it work now?

    Huawei EMUI 10.1 feature

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:18 PM PDT

Model: Huawei P30 I updated today my phone to EMUI 10.1 I checked on Youtube to know about the new features. That new floating window is pog but I got a question: "Can you resize the floating window?"

Also, in the video, when they received a message (SMS) notification, they clicked on it and a floating Window appeared instead of entering the app. I tried with Whatsapp/Discord but it didn't work. Does it work only with SMS? Or should I enable something? Thx!

Moto z3 Play had green lines on screen, now the screen won't light up at all.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Basically it had the green line issue that I've been seeing a bit online. When I put pressure on the screen near the bottom a bunch more lines would pop up. Yesterday it went black, but it is still on. It still vibrates if I hold the power button and responds to okay Google. It started working for a few hours today and then went black again. I'm not very tech-savvy but from what I saw online about the green line I think it's an issue with the display. Is there anything I can do about it or should I bring it into my tech store?

Youtube Autoplaying After Phone Calls and Alarms

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:13 AM PDT

I've been having this issue for a while now. Typically I go to bed listening to random youtube videos. I have Youtube Premium so I can do background play for them.

My issue is, once I snooze my alarm the next morning, the video starts playing again, at full volume. This also occurs when ending a phone call. It hasn't been an issue yet, but I can imagine, if I were to have an alarm go off during work, or ending a phone call similarly, having a random video going off at full volume could be an issue.

Has anyone had any similar experience? Anyone know how to fix this? For reference, I am using a OnePlus 7Pro.

Is there a way to turn off suggested GIFs in GBoard for Google Messages?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:39 PM PDT

Just this morning, GBoard has started suggesting cute little GIFs for me to send, and I inadvertently sent one. No problem, but I just hate it. I've Googled around for solutions, and all of the things I have found have not helped so far - they are from last year or older. Anything new for this current situation?

Why is Chrome opening links in the YouTube app?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:28 PM PDT

    Using OnePlus 7.

In YouTube's open by default settings, "open supported links" is set to "ask every time". So why when I select a video link from from a Google search does it automatically open it in the YouTube app?

Use phone to backup external SD Card to External Hard Drive

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:17 PM PDT

I have a Galaxy Samsung S10+. I'd like to copy my drone's micro SD Card to a portable external hard drive. Is this possible?

I'm thinking to use some sort of USB C OTG (on the go) hub that has a micro SD Card along with a USB port so that I can plug in a hard drive as well.

Is this possible/doable? Can anyone recommend a USB C hub that would allow this? Would like to have one that powers the harddrive/phone during this process. I'll be backing up 256GB micro SD cards to a 5TB external hard drive. The external drive does not have a power plug and needs to be powered by the USB cable.

Android thinks it has no storage

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I got a strange problem with my Android in the last few days. Whenever an app tries to access "noninternal" storage, it fails. This effects every saving-Operation in any app, e.g. taking screenshots or photos, saving images from messengers etc.. It looks like the app-storage isnt effect as a GPS-Fitness tracker is still able to track and save my route and later show it in history, even after closing the app. Exporting the gpx-files still fails.

System settings tells me that i have 14GB internal storage and 7GB on the SD-card left.

I am using a 3 year old Moto G5Plus (XT1685, 32GB) with 32GB external SD-Card. OS is Android 8.1. Device is not rooted.

Taking screenshots yields following notification-error-message: "Couldn't caputre screenshot: Can't save screenshot due to limited storage space!". Taking pictures with the camera yields to an camera-app-crash: "Camera error: Please restart camera".

Accessing the storage from PC via USB works fine. Copying onto the sd-card does not work.

The app battery drains pretty fast even in idle, which is pretty unusual for this device, as i normally had to charge it once every two days. Battery usage is high for "Google Play services" (21%), "Mobile network standby" (10%) and "System" (9%). (I guess this is because Google Play Services constantly retries to access memory but with no success?).

RAM usage is normal, but looking at CPU usage with "top" via "adb shell" shows a process called [kworker/u16:2], which uses 99% CPU whenever it can (see picture). I checked my old MotoG Gen1 and it doesn't have this process.

    df -h output.

    Things i already tried:

    • Deleting some more Apps
    • Rebooting the device via reboot
    • Rebooting the device via shutdown and manual start
    • Revoke and reallow storage permissions for an app

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem? I haven't seen anything related to this in the internet, but also had no real idea how to search for this problem.

    Thanks for helping!

    Screen timeout + InTune/Work Profile

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:23 AM PDT

I have recently installed Microsoft InTune and associated apps like Teams and Outlook on my personal device (Samsung Galaxy S9+ running Androind 10) for work, one of the restrictions that has been imposed on the device is around screen timeout settings which can only be set to up to 5 minutes. Before I installed InTune I was able to use Caffeinate to keep the screen awake, however I assume part of the security around InTune prevents this from working as the screen now turns off after five minutes even with Caffeinate on.

What are my options here? It seems a trivial thing to kick up a fuss with work, at the same time its my personal device and my priority is ensuring that it works the way I want it to. So I'd rather find a solution that allows me to use my phone as I see fit, but also keep the work apps as they are quite beneficial in my day to day.

I've tried Caffeine though I gather this is less reliable on newer versions of android, I have also looked at using apps like macrodroid to set timeout settings and I've looked in the full screen apps settings and nothing seems to work. Is my only option to remove the work apps or is there alternative?

Micro SD Card pics won't delete

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:11 AM PDT

Hey so I've been trying this for a year now but no matter what, these pics on my Micro SD card will not delete. I've tried deleting the folders themselves but they restore as well. I've deleted the backup on my Google Photos but I have no clue what to do now. If it helps, I'm specifically trying to delete a Kik folder that somehow is on my external card as well as videos saved on it.

Things to know before buying my first android, gaming focus?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:39 AM PDT

I'm ready to give up my iPhone and switch to android, mostly because I'm tired of the closed marketplace for games on iOS. I've always heard that you can basically load any games you want on an android phone. Is this basically true of any android phone or do I need to keep certain things in mind when I shop? Any other android gaming wisdom I should learn?

Found a weird application draining my battery

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:42 AM PDT

Hi, there is suddenly some weird application draining my battery voraciously. On battery settings it's just the Android robot icon and the number 10356. I have no idea what this is. Malwarebytes doesn't detect it and I uninstalled a few new apps that I had downloaded from the play store. Does anyone know what this is and what I can do about it? Thanks.

How to change white navigation bar?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:21 AM PDT

My phone (LG K30) updated to Android Pie this morning, and I quickly found out that in many apps with dark modes/themes, the navigation bar still shows up as white.

I've tried using Navbar Apps to fix this, but that only changes the colour of the bar itself, and not the buttons on it. Since the buttons are a very dark grey, this makes the buttons almost impossible to see on a black navbar.

I've also tried switching to gestures mode after seeing that suggested, but I can't find any option to hide gesture hints, so the white bar is still there.

Does anyone have any advice for how to fix this?

Is there a keyboard with a "delete" key?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:16 AM PDT

I find myself overshooting selecting a piece of text, so I have to reposition the cursor so the backspace key gets rid of the unwanted text. However, is there a way to have a delete button like I'd find on a conventional computer keyboard?
