New Play Store update has ads taking up 50% more space than before Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:39 PM PDT I'm sure everyone else has noticed this but why is no one talking about it. Now I get maximum 9 apps on my freakin 6.5 inch smartphone screen. Does Google think I'm blind or something? Why do app icons need to be this big? The text area for the app name is even partially off-screen at the bottom. I realise that each device has a different DPI but c'mon, why aren't we at least allowed to change the size of these icons ourselves? https://i.imgur.com/ZZeFKn1.jpg As for the front page, I mean look at this... 2.65 apps displayed? One is even a video (bottom off-screen app). We already have "Google Play Games" where this garbage should be displayed. Is it crazy to say they should be separate and that not every Android user plays games? https://i.imgur.com/BEjNpTu.jpg Who is the idiot in charge of UI/UX at Google's Android department? Next update we're going to what, one app per entire device display window huh? EDIT: I forgot to show this one too. Of both the above things, this is actually perhaps the worst change of all as it is actually malicious. Showing me completely unrelated apps at the top of the screen even when I searched for something totally different. The proximity of the "Install" button, next to the magnifying button for searching is deliberately so close as to make the user mistakenly tap "Install". If the app is small and your connection fast, it will be installed almost instantly. This is literally Clickjacking. [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:08 PM PDT We have become absolutely obsessed as a society with what will come next. More specifically when it comes to tech. We BARELY tapped into the mid cycle of the most recent phones and we are already obsessively chasing what will come next. The rumors. The pictures. The leaks. The opinions on YouTube. Don't get me wrong, some people made a whole platform out this and good for them. But I feel like our disappointments each year are our own fault. We are always let down because we want too much, too quickly. I mean think about it. What possible revolutionary features can be created in 1 year? These big companies know this and they keep jacking up prices higher and higher and giving us less and less. Every year we fall for it. I for one need to stop chasing what's next and just enjoy what I have. For a minimum of 2, if not 3 years I don't even want to think about what the next phone offers. [link] [comments]
I wrote a new type of camera app as an alternative to Google Camera. Please help me test it. Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:59 PM PDT UPDATE 2: I've updated the app to display an error message if RAW support is not available. Unfortunately it looks like a whole bunch of Samsung phones just don't support RAW output from any of their cameras. That's a real shame since it makes it impossible to make the app work. You can download the APK directly here or wait for play store update. If you have previously installed it from the Play Store then you will need to remove it to install the APK below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18ZFbZkempj4-peKC7727mvpL7dwBN0Tp/view?usp=sharing UPDATE: I've pushed out an update that hopefully fixes crashes on some devices. The purple image issue has also been fixed. Working on getting support for more Samsung devices. If you get the APK you might need to remove the Play Store version. I seem to get a bunch of Play Protect warnings when installing it. Hi guys, I have been working on a new type of camera app for about two years in my spare time. I would love some help in testing it. The app works in a similar way to the Google Camera in that it captures in RAW format and merges multiple images to reduce noise. The app also:
Additionally, it does all the processing without specialized hardware so it should work on Samsung devices with Exynos processors. I have only been able to test it on OnePlus devices (5, 6 and 7 Pro) so don't quote me on that. You will need a device that has full Camera2 API support for it to work. I wrote this app as something between a full blown "PRO" mode that requires a lot of time and a point and shoot. I was frustrated by manufacturers choosing the style of my photos as well as shutter lag leading me to miss shots of my pets or kids. I am also working to add:
Bugs/limitations I am aware of:
You can download it from the Play store (beta, free download): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motioncam Thanks so much! I have been working on this for so long so I'm excited to share it. [link] [comments]

Is it just me or there is a lot of android hate around here? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:01 PM PDT Hey I am new to this subreddit, and before I get called being a fanboy I own an iPad pro 2017 with IOS 14 and I love it to death. That being said I also love android and have been a big enthusiast. However, browsing this subreddit makes it feel that if I am using Android I am a dumb consumer who does not care about my Privacy or Time with these cheap inefficient Android phones. I acknowledge all the flaws Android's have, such as untimely updates, inconsistent UI across the board. But the platform is still improving constantly, and among a few things Android's are actually really secure with SELinux and things like Play Protect, much securer than Windows on desktop PC. The excitement around new Android products seems to be really low, and even if there is news there is a huge ratio of people just outright saying that it is not innovative or the product is going to be bad before it's release etc. I get it, iPhones are faster and are more Secure, but not even everyone lives in America, since iPhones around the world are sold at a higher mark up than America, especially in third world countries. Consider the iPhone SE, in America it feels really attractive with it's $399 price tag, but here in Pakistan it is about PKR 85000. Which converts to $500 us dollars, also taking into account that the median wage is about $461 dollars per month here. Now imagine this price on a pro model for in my opinion not a big difference for such a huge price margin. I agree some Android phones are outrageously priced too, such as Samsung's, but even then the S20 Ultra 5G is round about $100 cheaper than iPhone 11 pro Max here. (Also Apple does not provide official warranty in Pakistan, whilst Samsung does) For one I have always had a good experience with Android, I have owned various flagships myself and am currently using a OnePlus 6. I never had phones spontaneously give up on me as people say, infact a few phones from 2014 still work fine (Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC one M8) just fine. Moreover, the ecosystem is fine for the price as well. I have a MOTO watch from 2014 and it gets me through my day just fine as well. And my OnePlus 6 works as good as new on Android 10. Browsing this subreddit makes me feel like owning android is a chore and that going to Apple is a supreme convergence. I don't know why, Apple is amazing but these phones aren't really much behind. And if Android was really that bad or just a poor man's alternative to Apple then it wouldn't have had the ecosystem it has today! Or maybe I am just writing a rant here I guess, but I remember back in 2014, especially coming from a wealthy area in the country I was mocked for choosing Android over iOS, I don't want that sentiment to return! Especially since now that the margin is so narrow that it really is just personal preference! [link] [comments]

Option to remove Bottom Navigation Pill Bar on Gestural Navigation on Stock Android Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:56 PM PDT I think Google should update stock android to give the option to remove the Bottom Navigation Bar on Gestural Navigation like Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Huawei. Gesture navigation has given increased screen real estate to take advantage of our increasingly bezeless phones. But the fullscreen experience is interrupted by this bar that should be toggable.
