[Xiaomi Mi 5S] Overcoming the flashing red light of death

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:58 AM PDT

    Hello there,

My Mi 5S is going the way of the Dodo. First the screen died (actually, it might have been a battery problem even back then that got misdiagnosed by the technician, who proceeded to fuck up the screen, but that's besides the point).

Then I started using the phone through the PC (Win 10) using a software called Vysor (authorizing USB debug using ADB console without access to the screen was straight up black magic). The phone was "working" ok (made calls, ran apps, etc). Then I proceeded to fuck up again and let it discharge under a critical level.

    Right now, here's the status:

    • If I connect the phone to the PC, It gets identified correctly (Mi 5S) for 5 seconds, then reboots. Sometimes it reboots to being identified correctly and booting again, but it always ends up being identified as "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" and stabilizes like this;

    • If I boot into bootloader, it gets Identified as "Android" and I can access the phone using fastboot commands (but not ADB commands);

    • If I try to boot into recovery, either manually or through fastboot, it doesn't get recognized at all.

In all those cases, the charging light stays off. It also stays off when trying to charge using an outlet. Here are the "fixes" I tried to far:

    • Leaving the power pressed while charging. With that, the red led blinked dimly several times, then brightly several times, then stopped for several seconds, then repeat. I left the phone like that for about 6-8 hours, but apparently it didn't work.

    • I disconnected the battery, connected the power charger using an outlet, then reconnected the battery.

The red led starts blinking consistently when the charger gets connected (even before reconnecting the battery) and it stops if I remove it before reconnecting the battery (which is expected, of course).

After reconnecting the battery, it keeps blinking; even after disconnecting and re-reconnecting the charger.

If I connect it to the PC while in this blinking state, it doesn't get recognized at all.

If I power it ON, the light stops blinking, and I can't get it blinking again unless I repeat the battery disconnecting > reconnecting process.

So, Google tells me that the phone might be dead for good, and also that some people managed to get it back by letting it charge for a long time (even days).

So my question is: in which state should I be letting it charge? With the blinking light after the battery disconnecting process, in fastboot mode or completely off?

If you guys/gals have any clue to that question or about any other "fix" to this problem, I'd REALLY appreciate it, since there's a lot of stuff I need to recover from the phone, and I'm also missing some very important messages right now,

Thanks in advance for any help!

Looking for phones with front-facing stereo speakers

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:41 AM PDT

I can't use headphones and my Axon 7 is dying, so I'm looking for a replacement. The only option I'm aware of is the Asus ROG Phone 2. Are there any other decent Android phones with front-facing stereo speakers?

How to boot up phone with broken power button and broken volume down button?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:52 AM PDT

My phone is an Oppo A37s.

I had this problem for a while now where the power button and the volume down button does not work, so I really dont let it have 0% battery. Suddenly, my phone decided to restart on a loop and only stopped when the battery drained to 0%. I charged my phone and it now says OK (Fully charged), but now, my worst problem is that I cant boot it up. Unfortunately, I think I did not enabled USB debugging.

Is there anyway to boot it up or its now as good as a brick?

    THANKS!

Question about malicious sites blocked by my router.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 05:46 AM PDT

I have an Asus AC68U router which has a host of useful security features for logging and showing a visual map of incidents, blocks etc on my entire home network. Recently I noticed that the malicious sites feature had blocked a handful of hosts (not sure if inbound or outbound) for my phone. There are 42 logged in total for these sites.

    Here is a screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/cR8w5K5.jpg

Now these all happened at the same time frame leading me to believe it was ads in the background for an app I am using or maybe something in the background anyway.

For note, I do not install random apps, I use all the apps I have but some are free as they display a banner ad such as YouCut video editor, just to add further context.

I also don't browse unsavoury sites either but do browse website and things that again may contain ads within the page so maybe a site had a malicious ad at that time that was blocked?

Android x86 on Surface 3 - WiFi Stopping when device sleeps

    Posted: 03 May 2020 07:19 AM PDT

Since I can't post in r/Androidx86 I am posting here.

I am currently dual booting the original 64 bit Android 9 version of Android x86 and Windows 10 64 bit.

Everything works great and straight out of the box but the only problem was that whenever the device sleeps the Wi-Fi turns off and doesn't turn on again.

I found that if I try and turn on mobile hotspot it will freeze and go to the lock screen but enable wifi again. This is only a temporary fix and i would rather not have to turn on a feature that doesn't work to re-enable another. Does anyone know how to fix this.

Anyway those we're the only problems I had everything else works great. I recommend it to anyone who still has a Surface 3.

How to bypass FACTORY RESET PROTECTION in my Rooted Android phone?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 12:46 PM PDT

So I have an Asus Zenfone Max (Z010D), and I purchased a new phone so I rooted the Asus one.

It was going all good from last 1 week, however today I messed my phone, most apps that needed root permissions were not working, and thought that reinstalling the Custom Rom would solve the issue, but after I reset and installed the custom rom I was stopped by the FACTORY RESET PROTECTION

As I said its an old phone so I didn't have any sim card in it so made a random Gmail Account previously just to access playstore. And now I don't remember the ID nor the password and I'm stuck.

I have my bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed, so if anyone can help me out to bypass this.

And the custom ROM I'm in is google free, so there's no Google app nor any web browsers installed. So if someone is going to suggest going into google app or web browser but gboard or any other way. It's not possible. I already checked youtube for it and none seemed to help me.

    [Alcatel 1S] No calendar notifications.

My mom recently got an Alcatel 1S (2019 model). Situation: you put a new activity in the standard calendar app (which I assume is the Google calendar) and set up a notification for it. Problem: At the time of the notification nothing happens, no sound, no visible notification, literally nothing.

    Do IMEI repair actually work?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I'd like to prefix with I attained this phone from the original owner. My sister-in-law lost her S9 at school, her mother used the device insurance to get her a new one, a month later the original phone was returned to her. My MIL not being tech literate gave me the phone when she learned I needed a new one without telling me that it had been flagged lost/stolen, we called Rogers, they told us to return the device with parcel insurance at our own cost or destroy it - but they won't remove it from the blacklist.

I'd like to keep it, I was going to just replace the logic board to get a new IMEI, but while searching for one, I found a IMEI repair service, So my question is; does anyone here have any experience with such a service? Do they actually work?

Family Link was installed on my (adult) phone and I need to get it off

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:52 AM PDT

TL;DR: My girlfriend signed me into a Gmail account she made and locked it with Google Family Link. I need to get out of it.

So during this quarantine I've been living with my girlfriend and it's tested our relationship. Without getting into details we've been having our fair share of fights, and last night while I was sleeping, as some sort of retribution she signed me out of me Gmail account on my phone, logged into one she made with the age set to 7 years old, and registered my account with this thing called Google Family Link.

So with this thing she basically gave herself full control of my phone. She can see what I do on it, set up parental controls, and even completely lock me out of my own phone without me having any say in any of it!

Needless to say our relationship is over, however I've tried deactivating the service but it says "since I'm 7" I can't do that without authorization from my "parents" aka girlfriends account. Needless to say she refuses to comply.

Is there a way to disable this stupid thing without factory resetting my phone (assuming that's possible!)?

    Thanks for your help!

WiFi Automatically Turns On When Phone Turns On

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:47 AM PDT

    Hello All,

    Have a Nokia 3.1 with Android 9.

A few days ago, I got the security update for April 5, 2020. Since then, I've had issues with the phone automatically turning on WiFi every time I turn the phone on. I searched online for solutions, but I've already turned off the option to automatically turn on WiFi.

I went into Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi > WiFi Preferences.

The option for "Turn on WI-Fi automatically" was already turned off; I did this back when I got my phone early last year, and it was running Android Oreo.

I noticed, however, that "Open network notification" was turned on, and I don't recall if that was an option before the recent update. All I know is, my phone used to turn on without turning on the WiFi.

I turned off the option to "Open network notification". But, my phone continues to automatically turn on Wi-Fi at every startup. I turn my phone off every night, so it has been restarted multiple times already, but the issue persists.

I found a potential solution at the following link, but that did not work, either: <https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/cjhri3/solution_wifi_keeps_turning_itself_on/>

After turning off special WiFi permissions for each of the listed apps, one by one to see if I could pinpoint the problem, the problem persisted. I then noticed that I could view system apps with special WiFi permissions, so I turned off permissions for those apps. The problem persisted. So, then I turned off special WiFi permissions for the "regular" apps as well as the system apps, all completely off. The problem persisted. And yes, I did restart the phone after every change, precisely so I could see if WiFi turned on when restarting the phone.

I turned the special permissions back on, since turning them off did not solve the problem. The problem is clearly with the security update, but I honestly don't see how automatically turning on the WiFi, or otherwise introducing bugs, is a security update.

Not sure what to do at this point, so I popped by here.

Can I use a less powered charger (5V1A) instead of my phones recommended(9V2A)?It will charge slow I know but will it cause battery damage?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:46 AM PDT

My phone heats up like hell gets even upto 43-44 C while charging with my default charger thats 18W.So I charged it with my old Huawei charger witch is like 5W so that it doesn't heat up. My doubts are 1.The slow charger temps are low but takes more time.So is putting phone charging a longer time(about thrice as normal) damage battery? 2.My phone default charger output says 2 values (5V2A and 9V2A).The charger charges at 18W power so Can I switch it to 5V2A only?

Phone sreen glitching out (Cubot phone)

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:36 AM PDT

I've had an issue with my phone this morning - it's a Cubot Android smartphone. Whilst playing one of my games the screen suddenly turned green. Like, just full block green, then it started alternating between green and blue and there was a horribly staticy noise. I couldn't get it to respond by pressing or holding the power button so I removed the battery.

After reinserting it I now can't get into my phone at all. It starts okay, getting to the "enter your PIN" screen, but aftering entering my PIN and it starts booting up, the screen starts glitching out and it becomes unresponsive again. The way it glitches is random - sometimes it's a full white screen, sometimes it's blue or green or a mix, sometimes there are bars... no static though so that's different from earlier. After a while it'll either just stay like that or it'll restart and go back to the PIN entry screen.

Normally I would just give in and go out to get it looked at right away but given the current situation, I can't really do that. Does anyone know what's going on and if there's a way to fix this, even if just temporarily? I've tried Googling but the only solutions I find involve me going into my phone's settings, which I can't do because I can't get into the thing.

My mom's phone has terrible problems synchronizing Whatsapp

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:12 AM PDT

My mom always had difficulties with Whatsapp synchronization. Messages take several minutes to send and sometimes messages can't arrive on her phone even for hours (even though she has great wifi reception at that time).

Until recently she had a Samsung Galaxy Young 2 (a terrible Android 4.4 phone) so I thought that's probably why she has those problems, but now she upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy A20e (reasonable Android 9 phone) and her problems persist.

With her new phone it works really well but it gets worse over time until she restarts the phone.

I already told her to go to the battery settings of Android and set the App start of Whatsapp to manual setting and enable everything there.
I don't really know what else to do. It is really difficult for me to analyze the problem as I can't visit her to look at her phone because of COVID-19.

Edit: So her Wifi speed is 1.5 Mbit/s up and down, which is really slow in my opinion but this should be no reason that her Whatsapp stops synchronizing.

Help! SMS Backup & Restore Created Many Duplicates...

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:04 AM PDT

I started using Signal last year as my primary messaging client. I had hoped I could get the majority of my friends on board, but couldn't even persuade one friend within a year.

So, I decided to start the arduous task of downloading all of the pictures, placing them in a designated folder, exporting all of the plaintext messages, and restoring them with SMS Backup & Restore. I did all of that last night.

I've had multiple surprises! Messages is quite a bit niftier than when I last used it, many messages I thought were deleted were restored, and the main problem...every message from before I began using Signal last year has been duplicated. Every single one.

I've read about a few de-duplicators, but do they work? Are they safe? How do they work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a recording app that will "lock"? Gonna strap a phone to myself while water rafting.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Okay so here's the deal. It's not my main phone. My main phone is a Galaxy S9 that won't even be with me while water rafting. The phone that I will strap to myself will be a cheap phone that I don't use for anything.

The problem is that if I set it to record I don't want the "record" option to stop or pause. Is there a way to have it record where ANY wet or body interaction absolutely can't stop the video? My Galaxy S9 has a lock mode for games but idk about camera.

I mean maybe I should take my Galaxy S9? It's water resistant, right? Idk.
