Is someone spying on me through my phone's camera or am I just being paranoid?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 07:37 AM PDT

So today a buddy of mine told me to look at our saved conversations on Snapchat. I went and saw he had something funny saved from a long time ago. I screenshotted it to send to some of my other friends, and I sent it over SMS. While it was sending, I clicked on the picture and for a split second a photo of a bald man pooped up, then it switched to my screenshot. It was almost like it was a man on a webcam. It was there and then it was gone, and I have never seen that picture of that man. I searched my photos, my sent photos in that group, and my Snapchat saved photos in the conversation I screenshotted. Nothing. I've never seen anything like it. Should I be worried?

If it helps I have a Note 9. I have no idea how anyone would hack my phone, I haven't downloaded any strange apps recently or done anything shady from what I can remember. The only thing I can think of was I got multiple calls from the same random number a few days ago.

Am I just being paranoid or is this a legitimate issue?

EDIT: Wow. After some more searching, found the pic or the guy. It was some Twitter avatar a buddy of mine sent me literally the day I got the phone. I can relax... For now....

    What is index.html?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:37 PM PDT

I'm using Samsung S10+. I've using it for a year now, but recently every time I've been trying to open webpages on Instagram and using google news, it keeps opening Samsung Internet and prompting me to download a file names index.html. I've tried downloading it and it just shows a few boxes on my screen and after a while, it just pops out again and again. I have no idea how to fix it does anyone have a solution? thank you so much!!!

I have about 10GB of internal storage on my android phone. When I did a storage space analysis I saw that the files on my phone are less than 1GB but somehow my storage is full. Where is my storage going and how can I get it back?

    Google apps getting automatically enabled

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:53 PM PDT

I've disabled Google news, YouTube and Google play movies since I bought the device (Nokia 8) back in early 2018. Everything had been fine untill the past two weeks when they started getting enabled automatically. I've disabled them again a few times, deleted the Play Store's app data, switched accounts etc. but to no avail. Does anyone know what's going on? Also it isn't an OEM related problem because I've seen some people complaining about it on different phones.

Which camera is superior - OnePlus 8 vs Xiaomi Mi 10 (India) ?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 05:30 AM PDT

Guys I need some help to decide which phone to buy. I have been using a Redmi Note 5 Pro for 2 years by now.

I prioritize cameras (photography not videography) and I need atleast a 3 camera setup. I prefer picture quality like sharpness, colour, focus, dynamic range and low-light performance over a crazy zooming ability, so let's keep that in mind.

I'm confused between these two phones because OnePlus 8's camera has been criticized a lot and I'm not quite sure if the Mi 10 has a better camera.

I'm from India and the OnePlus 8 costs 45k and Mi 10 has launched at 50k for the 8gb/128gb version. I have a budget of around 50-55k. What makes me reluctant about Xiaomi is I have hated the software experience on my Redmi Note 5 Pro. It's so buggy and has a lot of ads in the UI itself. It feels cheap. I'm afraid that even the SD 865 might lag on MIUI. I sometimes feel that spending around 50k on it might not be worthwhile. I prefer Oxygen OS to MiUI but camera is the priority for me. OnePlus 8 has macro instead of a telephoto, and despite the dedicated lens the macro isn't good. Can it be fixed by software updates ? Should I wait for the 8T ? Will it be too pricey in India ?

But if someone can give me a clear verdict that the Mi 10 has a better edge in camera quality (not versatility, which the Mi 10 obviously has) over the OnePlus, I'd go for it.

I have the habit of doing some global editing on photos. So I need a camera that can capture details accurately so that if necessary some global editing can fix it to look great. I do not want to regret the camera experience. You may suggest any other camera phones that may be in the same budget but not too old. I'd like a good processor and it doesn't have to be a herculean SD 865.

What do you guys think I should go for ?

    Thanks in advance !

What is this Icon in my Status bar?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:55 PM PDT

    https://ibb.co/TrWDMj9

    - Showed up this morning

    - Did not install any new apps.

    - Do not have a Security app

    - No current apps matching icon

    - All notifications are cleared.

    - Went into system UI Tuner and turned off every single Status Bar item. All items removed fine expect the one in question.

    What could it be?

Edit: The icon is not device specific. I check the manual of my phone and reviewed all the Status Bar icons. The unknown icon in question was not in the manual.

Mirror from android phone to another android phone

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:30 PM PDT

I have a Poco F1 that I use as a daily driver, and my old (rooted) motorola droid razr. The moto razr has a built in mini-hdmi port, and I only ever use the phone with my (dumb) tv since it's fairly slow. I was thinking if there was a way to use my Poco F1 and cast it, that would be better for me than trying to pull up content on the razr directly.

So I'm wondering of it's possible to use the casting feature built into android on my Poco F1 to cast to the razr. I know there are 3rd party apps on the google play store, but if possible I'd prefer not to have to enter a pin whenever I want to mirror my phone.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for a privacy focused ROM

    Posted: 08 May 2020 04:15 PM PDT

Hi, so I had switched to an iOS device around a year ago. But somehow, since I had my old android (OnePlus 3t), I decided to have a little fun with it. I had already unlocked the bootloader and running a custom rom, but I switched to pixel OS. However I think I would love to experience a hyper privacy focused device. I was looking upto graphene os, but that is only available for the Google pixel line of phones. I just want to get rid of the Google Play services, while being able to switch to open source alternatives. Are there any suggestions? Remember this is a secondary device, so I do not mind some minor inconvenience. But I would somehow like to experience how it would feel to go all in and be a privacy freak.

Galaxy S8 Black Screen of Death (maybe water damage?) Help

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:36 PM PDT

Hello, after I think some water damage, my Galaxy S8 has stopped responding. The screen is always black, completely unresponsive. There is a flashing Blue LED notification that sometimes comes up, and it turns red when plugged into the charger. Sometimes I can feel some haptic feedback vibrations too.

Holding down the power button doesn't work, plugging it into the charger doesn't do anything besides maybe charge it, holding down power + volume button does nothing besides a short vibration. Plugging it into my PC gives the windows device noise, but there is no device shown in the PC.

How do I fix this? Or at the very least, is there any way I can recover my photos from the phone?

Accessibility services keep turning off, battery optimization doesn't do anything

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:10 PM PDT

(Android Pie)I'm using several apps that use accessibility services, including PieControl and LastPass. The problem is, their accessibility services get switched off after a few minutes to an hour, meaning I have to go to settings and the accessibility services menu to re-enable them. The thing that really pisses me off is that judging from Google results, this has been an issue with Android going back to 2016, and apparently they still haven't fixed it. It's happened to me on phones from HTC, LG, and Samsung, and my tablet, so it's not specific to any device.

The common advice on the support forums is to go to battery optimization and turn off optimization for the affected apps, but I've done this and it has absolutely no effect. The other suggested fix to try is to lock the apps in the recents menu, but Pie doesn't have an option for this. When I Google it, the only thing that comes up is app pinning, which is not the same thing at all.

Please, it's driving me up the goddamn wall. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Something is killing my internet speeds

    Posted: 08 May 2020 03:09 PM PDT

Something on my tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab A running 9.0) is stopping me from using my internets full bandwidth. My other wireless devices don't have this issue. It's rated for 72+ Mbps and I'm lucky if I get 1.1 Mbps.

    Change audio server

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:18 PM PDT

Hey! I'm on daisy using LOSQ GSI from eternityson. I wonder whether there are other audio servers available on Android that I can't find. It's because for me the default one (AudioFlinger) is really bad.

What I'd like to is :

    • Completely disable AudioFocus to be able to play two sounds at once.
    • Connect headphones with microphone and use the phone's one anyway (but listen the other person with the headphones)

Are bloatware and longevity still issues?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 02:10 PM PDT

Hey it's my first time posting here, so go easy on me.

I used to be a super hardcore Android user however I kept having the same issue: I would buy a new phone and it would work flawlessly for 12-18 months. Then the battery performance would fall off a cliff, the phone would be riddled with bugs/glitches, and I would have to factory reset the device every few weeks. This would leave me counting down the days until I could upgrade and throw my current device out of a window.

When the camera on my six month old Moto Z just stopped because of a software update, I switched over to the dark side and it's been smooth sailing ever since. That being said, I should probably upgrade when Apple stops supporting my iPhone 6s. Android manufacturers are doing some really cool things, and the devices are generally less expensive, however I'm worried I'll be forced to upgrade after two years.

Do you guys even know what I'm talking about? Is this still a trend in the newer flagships? To me, it seems like most Android manufacturers totally do not intend for their devices to be used for more than two years, but no one talks about this in reviews or other buying guides.

Additionally, the bloatware on Android devices borthered me. It's not that these apps hurt me in any way, they just made me angry. If I drop $600+ on a device, why the frick am I forced to have IMDB and NFL Zone installed?! Sure I could always root the device and uninstall these apps, but I strongly believe consumers should not have to brick their phones to uninstall these totally useless apps. Have "they" finally stopped doing this or do phones still ship with all kinds of mandatory garbage?

    Xiaomi Phone Bricked

    Posted: 08 May 2020 01:55 PM PDT

Today i was updating my device like i normally do, with a zip file from the twrp. Everything seemed ok, but then my phone, instead of booting normally keeped going into the recovery. I have tried several options, from restoring the old system (the new one was the miui 12 beta), to install via Xiaomi flash tool, adb fatboot and adb sideload.

Everything resulted in a failure, i am now desperatly in need of help in order to solve this problem and keep using my phone as normally.

    Thanks to everyone in advance

    Not Downloading/Uploading in Background

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:34 PM PDT

I don't know what I ticked off but lately I've noticed Play Store will have no progress in downloading when it's in the background (like when I'm watching offline videos). This also happens when uploading a file in Google Drive. Play Store and Google Drive should always be on top before I can continue to download/upload. Locking the screen also pauses the download/upload.

I'm on TouchWiz UI on Android 7.0 if this helps.

    Thank you in advance!

Can I use whatsapp web without a camera?

    Posted: 08 May 2020 12:32 PM PDT

    so here's the deal:

my own phone (Sony xperia xz premium) is lying to rest in the drawer because I can't charge him until the new charging port will arrive. I forgive him because he's 4 years old.

Anyways, I have my work's phone, they give some Galaxy something idk what it is, and the difference between that and a normal smartphone is that they disable the camera in this one.

They give us camera disable smartphones when we work because security reasons.

Until my xperia will rise again, I moved my sim to the work's phone, and using it as mine.

I need to access whatsapp web, but it require scanning the qr code... and, well: I basically have no camera.

This is the only phone I have working in my household.

Can I somehow access whatsapp web?
