To this day Swype is still my favourite keyboard.

    Posted: 10 May 2020 11:52 PM PDT

...And it's not even available in the Playstore anymore.

Over the weekend I upgraded to Android 10 on my S6 Edge Plus (which on its own is a miracle, courtesy of all the great people involved in the Lineage OS project) and decided to finally go with the times, let go of an old trusty comrade and try out one of the many available alternatives. Today I switched back to Swype.

Back when Swype was introduced for Windows Mobile I was simply fascinated by the ingenuity of the idea. Conceptionally it was kinda like T9 on steroids and coincidentally (or actually not) Swype was made by the same guy who invented T9. Later on it ended up being the first app purchase I've ever made.

And even though Swype has gone out of business and disappeared from the App Store it just does so many things right which the competitors are seemingly unable to do. While the word detection quota has evidently suffered after the company's shutdown (I can only assume that's due the closure of online services), it's still much better than other keyboards I've tried, especially when it comes to slang words and the correct use of apostrophes in my native tongue. Switching between languages is easy with gestures, but more importantly I can freely select which keyboard layout to use for each language. Obviously I prefer my native one even when typing English, an option which i dearly miss on many competitors.

Gestures in itself are a blessing. Select all, copy, paste, cut, punctuation with automated space, etc: Everything is quickly accessible with simple gestures, much like you'd expect from a physical keyboard with Ctrl. The selection of symbols is great, my native keyboard comes with all the special characters that are necessary, a full number keypad is quickly accessible with gestures - it sounds like some exaggerated praise but it's just the perfect keyboard for me. If only they were still around with proper online services and improved word prediction.

The moment Swype stops working on newer Android versions is the moment I will stop upgrading. Unless someone (who preferably used Swype) can actually recommend a proper alternative. I've been through Gboard, AOSP keyboard, Swiftkey and none of them really managed to convince me.

The biggest differences I have found switching to iPhone after 6 years of Android

    Posted: 11 May 2020 03:06 AM PDT

I recently changed to an iPhone 11 after 2 years with my S8(and other models before it), and these are the biggest ups and downs I've found:

1: The optimization of most apps makes a huge difference over Android. Reddit, Instagram, run so well. My S8 had a better camera for a large part but the Instagram app wasn't made to take full advantage of it (especially Story videos).

2: I miss the back button. Really is much quicker in moving around on any app.

3: Google gives 15 GB while Apple gives 5 GB free cloud storage. Mine is almost full and it doesnt include photos.

4: I find the UI in general much smoother and less buggy. Animations are fast and smooth as well. Makes a huge difference.

5: I miss not having separate folders for photos, all my reddit stuff, FB stuff and camera photos are dumped in one folder with no way to automatically sort.

I really can't choose which OS I prefer, probably need a good few years to decide.
