Review of the Exynos S20+ after a week of using it. Posted: 11 Apr 2020 07:45 AM PDT So I recently got an Exynos S20+ because my dad's contract was up for renewal and he didn't feel the need to upgrade his current phone. So I got an S20+ instead(since it was at 0 dollars with my dad's plan). Honestly, I know that there has been a lot of negativity surrounding the Exynos models of the phone but as someone upgrading from a S7 Edge(also Exynos) I was very happy with my upgrade. Now there are definitely things I don't like about this phone and I hope to list out my pros and cons for each part of the phone and a conclusion to highlight my experiences with the phone! Display Now my S7 Edge already had a fantastic display and the one on the S20+ still blew my mind. The colors are spot on and the 120Hz mode is a dream to use. Scrolling is very smooth and content like videos and Netflix look amazing! I also like the fact that they reduced the curves on the sides of the screen, makes it harder to accidentally trigger stuff with my palm. The bezels, or lack thereof, are also amazing and honestly I barely notice the cutout for the camera. The one downside of having a phone with a 6.7inch display is that it can get quite fatiguing to use it with one hand. Sound The dual speakers were a nice surprise when I booted up spotify for the first time. They sound far far far better than the single dingy speaker on my S7. Honestly using the earpiece for a speaker is great as it fires directly towards your face! Call quality from the earpiece was also crystal clear( but that might change with sweat from years of using it). Ok time for a rant. I get Samsung removing the headphone jack from a business standpoint. They get more money from more galaxy bud sales and while it sucks so much as a consumer I can understand the reasoning behind it. BUT WHAT MADE MY BLOOD BOIL IS THE FACT THAT THEY DON'T INCLUDE A 3.5MM ADAPTER IN THE BOX. IT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH WHEN COMPANIES DO THIS AND IT JUST RUINS THE USER EXPERIENCE FAR MORE THAN JUST REMOVING THE DAMN HEADPHONE JACK. Honestly it was super scummy of Apple to do that and Samsung doing the same thing sucks. I get that the buds included in the box are really good but they should have still included a 3.5mm adapter especially because some people have really nice IEMs they want to use. I really hope that companies start putting in 3.5mm jacks again but that's a dream that will never come true. Oh well. Camera I honestly really really really like the camera with a few caveats. Now I am sure that the camera isn't as good as the Pixel 4 or the iPhone 11 in terms of quality but the pictures come out great in most cases. Night mode worked really well and I was surprised in the amount of detail and lack of noise in the pictures. Portrait mode worked surprisingly well for pictures of my face and the usual Samsung face filtering crap was far less aggressive. Unfortunately the portrait mode was absolutely horrendous for smaller objects and I was rather disappointed with how bad it was at detecting smaller objects like watches and pens especially since the S20+ has an additional sensor that's supposed to help a lot for portrait photography??? When it comes to the 64MP pictures the detail was there but something seemed to be amiss with the focus on the pictures. I am not sure why but the autofocus didn't seem to work. 8K recording worked but it seems like the footage wasn't stabilized and honestly it's quite pointless for the majority of people that buy this phone. The ultrawide lens is a nice add on but I haven't been able to experiment with it much because of quarantine being a thing. The 30x zoom is useless. Specs Now the Exynos model of the S20 series of phones is rather controversial. Yes users shouldn't be paying the same amount of money for a phone that is just downright worse. But at the end of the day, unless you are a heavy gamer the difference in power won't make a big difference to you APART from in terms of thermals and battery life(More on that later). For gaming the S20+ worked great for the stuff I play like COD and Fire Emblem Heroes and I didn't experience any stuttering but once again more on that later. The 8gb of ram is sufficient for pretty much anything you want to do and is basically future proofing if anything. The 128GB of storage is also good enough although I do find it a bit strange that it's not 256GB like both of the Note 10 Phones. I know most reviewers make it seem like having the Exynos processor makes the phone unusable and r/Android just loves to trash on it anyway but like I said earlier, most users wont notice the difference in day to day use when it comes to opening apps, browsing, etc. However, what Samsung is doing is not right and I will still condemn them for screwing consumers outside of the US. But at the same time if Samsung does stop producing chips it makes the mobile chip industry less competitive which isn't great. Oh well, TLDR it sucks but not much we can do about it but hope Samsung doesn't pull this for the Note 20. Battery and Thermals The battery life isn't great when you compare it to what it could be with a Snapdragon processor but it is still good. Throughout my 1 week of testing I consistently got 8 hours of SOT with mostly music, web browsing, social media and a bit of gaming with screen set at 1080p with 120Hz. For a 4500mah battery I would think that this is pretty good but I would imagine that this 8 hours could have been 10 or more on the Snapdragon version which frankly sucks and there's no other way of putting it. It's still a massive upgrade for me but not as mindblowing as it could have been. Now for thermals, the phone never got too hot for me even when playing COD(which I guess is a pretty light game and I don't play for more than 30 minutes at a time) but what did bother me was that the phone always felt warm. Now that isn't a major issue but the phone constantly feeling warm and closer to my body temp than the room temp when browsing Whatsapp didn't feel right. I did get used to it though! Software Experience I prefer stock android in general but Samsung's skin for One UI 2.0 is pretty light and they have a ton of great features. While I did immediately download Nova Launcher and have been using it since. if you have been put off by Touchwiz in the past, I would honestly give One UI a go. Stuff like the screenshot editor and in-built screen recorder are really good and I honestly take some of the Samsung features present for granted. In terms of Bloatware there isn't much although I am still disappointed by the fact that you can't uninstall Facebook :/ There isn't much to stay here but I can safely say that software is no longer a reason to avoid Samsung phones(Unless you are an android purist that can only use Pixels). Other stuff that I can't categorize The phone has water resistance which is always great for peace of mind. The dual sim and micro sd support is great and they do include a case and screen protector already installed on the phone which is always nice. Reverse wireless charging works and I can presume it will come in handy if you have the new Gear Active or Galaxy Buds but for anyone else its not very useful. I wish it was easier to distinguish between the power and volume buttons but at least the placement for the power button is better. The face recognition isn't super fast but it gets the job done and seems to be better than the one on the Pixel 4. The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is basically unchanged if not a tiny bit faster than the one on the S10. I am saddened by the loss of the heart rate sensor as I found it quite useful but oh well :/ Conclusion In conclusion, despite its flaws I think the S20 is a great phone to get especially for the Snapdragon version. The Exynos version is worse but unless you need your phone to not thermal throttle or need the best video camera/ best still photography camera on your phone. I would still recommend it if it is cheaper than the competition. Personally, for me this phone was a great buy as it was cheaper than the based model iPhone 11 on contract and the Pixel 4 because weird pricing but yeah. I will do an updated review 1 year in the future and if you guys have any questions about the phone, feel free to ask down below. I hope you guys enjoyed reading this review and sorry if it was rather informal! Edit 1: Ok I get that the Snapdragon version of the phone is better and I agree that consumers shouldn't be paying the same price for an inferior product. However, my point is that I recommend the phone if it is cheaper than the competition. The only reason I bought that S20+ despite it being Exynos is because it was cheaper than the Pixel 4XL and iPhone 11 on contract.( Samsung lhones go on sale really quickly) And no one is asking you to buy the phone at $999. Samsung phones go on sale really quickly! [link] [comments]
Your honest opinion of how useful Digital Wellbeing is? Posted: 11 Apr 2020 03:41 PM PDT So I was scrolling through the settings tonight and remembered about this little feature. I think apart from showing me some numbers it's not really doing a lot since it can be stopped/started at will. Are there any people who use it and are happy with it? Since Google seems to keep pushing this a lot lately. Most of the people just want it disabled. [link] [comments]
Samsung, Privacy, and Security Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:11 PM PDT I'm concerned about privacy and security with Samsung and would like to know what you all think about it. It's tough to enjoy my device not knowing if what's on there is private and secure. I'm either looking for someone to help me relax and trust Samsung a little more, or someone to help convince me it's time to switch to something else (which for me is either Google Pixel or Apple iPhone for privacy and security reasons, but if you have other suggestions please share). I'm also hoping this discussion will help others who are concerned. Here is some of what I've noticed: 1) Samsung's Galaxy Store won't run without permission to access the user's contacts. This has been the case for a while: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Note-9/Galaxy-Store-Now-Requires-Access-to-Contacts/td-p/646664 2) Samsung's saving everything that is copied (on-device, at least) even when using another keyboard. I'm not seeing an option to disable this. 3) Samsung Pay Framework is requiring location access all the time, not just when using the app. 4) Although there was an explanation that seemed to calm at lot of people here, I'm still worried about Samsung sending data without permission and without us knowing exactly what is being sent: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/ektg8u/chinese_spyware_preinstalled_on_all_samsung/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/el99r0/samsung_members_koreas_official_reply_has_arrived/ 5) Then, there's the preinstalled applications that Samsung won't allow us to remove. So, even if Samsung is trustworthy, what about everything else that is preinstalled? Samsung won't allow us to remove Briefing by Flipboard which had an issue with security last year: https://www.zdnet.com/article/flipboard-says-hackers-stole-user-details/ It's also concerning that we paid for our device and Samsung can change it without allowing us to change it back. If Facebook or Twitter (as an example) were to change something we can just delete our account without financial loss, but if Samsung were to change something after we've purchased our device we need to purchase another one from a different manufacturer. What do you all think about this? [link] [comments]
