I miss the variety during the 2010s era of smartphones...

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 11:54 PM PDT

Every phone company during that time had its own personality. Sony Ericsson. HTC. Samsung. Motorola. Nokia. They all had their own unique style and design philosophies. Nowadays it's mostly the same. Though I understand that it's mainly because screens literally take over the entire front, but I feel like they can still do something to differentiate themselves in some ways.

Anyone miss the Xpressmusic designs? 5800, 5530 had such fun, youthful designs. How about the LG Optimus One? Xperia Walkmans and Minis? HTC Desire?

I really miss those. Nowadays it's all just the same shiny glass with Aurora colors on every phone company. It's just boring. What happened with the variety? They used to design phones too based on their target demographics — youth, music lovers, adult/professional... Now it's all gone.

My review of the LG V60, coming from the OnePlus 7T

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:57 AM PDT

So to start, since I use Jump on Demand I have had experience with a lot of flagship phones over the past few years, from every major android phone manufacturer.

I had been interested in the V60 since it was announced, since I honestly missed LG's V-series. The V10 and V20 were some of the favorite phones I ever owned, and I loved how LG was going against the grain with the design with their phones back then. I had the V30 and it was the last LG phone I had used prior to this, and it wasn't anything special.

    Lets start with the positives

If I had to title the review, I would call it the content consumption and content production powerhouse. The speakers on it are fantastic, great stereo balancing and good low end. Also, I can't forget to mention the headphone jack. My god, I didn't realize how much I missed it. Being able to use whatever pair of headphones I want, with a strong DAC and AMP to power them too, is just fantastic. No more looking for dongles any time I forgot to charge my bluetooth headphones, and no more having dongles constantly break on me. And again, for media consumption in general. I am someone who does A LOT on my phone, so that involves using split-screen mode quite often. Cant forget to mention it has an SD Card slot.

This is where the second screen becomes so nice, having either two apps open full-screen at the same time, or one full-screen and one split screen. Or, if you just want to watch a video, use the case as a stand to prop up your phone, and this also means it's been awesome for videocalls recently. Let's not forget another benefit of the dual-screen, gaming. I've been using Citra MMJ and playing through Omega Ruby, and the S865 is fast enough to run the game at full speed. Same goes for Wii and GC emulation through Dolphin, if you're ok with touch controls, the built in gamepad app is pretty dang good.

Onto the battery life. Holy shit. I haven't ended one day below 30% with very heavy use. Being a 1080p/60hz screen and a 5000mAh battery, along with whatever software optimizations they have done makes the battery life on my 7T feel flat-out bad.

Camera: It's good, not great. Overall I'd say it edges out the OP7T in most areas, with better post-processing and more natural colors. The V60 has some of the least aggressive noise-reduction which I like, as can be seen by the smeariness of some areas of the 7T. The front facing camera is also better on the V60, but I don't feel like uploading pictures of myself... The manual mode on the cameras is also awesome if you're into it (as I am occasionally), has the most granular controls you could hope for, in both video and photo.

    Cons/etc

First off, even without the case, it's big. It's heavy. Makes my 7T seem like a featherweight in comparison. With the case on, it's of course bigger and heavier. However, the phone feels EXTREMELY solid and well-built at least.

The fingerprint scanner is slow. While I guess the 7T has pretty much the fastest in-display scanner out there, the extra delay in unlocking is kinda annoying.

The charging is also pretty slow, at only 25W fast charging. With such a massive battery, I think it really needed at least 40W. At least it has a nice USB-C to USB-C charger and cable included. It has wireless charging, though I don't own a wireless charger and can't comment on the charging speeds there.

The display, while excellent in terms of overall picture quality, brightness (easily visible in direct sunlight) and color reproduction, is 60hz. You get used to going back to 60hz pretty quickly, but I really would've liked a 90hz mode.

TL:DR: Pros: pretty good camera (with great manual controls), excellent battery life, headphone jack and expandable storage, display looks great, dual screen is wonderful for multitasking. Cons: It's big and heavy, 60hz screen, kinda slow fingerprint scanner, relatively slow charging.

If anyone has any questions ask away.

also here's a very quick camera comparison I threw together https://imgur.com/a/dmQz7R8

Edit: one more thing I'll throw in, both the wifi and cell reception are stronger than the 7T.

Edit 2: did a storage speed test because I was curious ,not that this will provide any real world difference

Please feel free to add any information or apps I might've missed. These are just the apps I personally have on my phone.

EDIT: May I add the fact that, even just within Google's own apps, the menus are ALL in randomly different places, settings icons in different places, behaviours are different, dark mode settings/options are randomly different. It's pretty difficult to believe all these apps come from the same 'developer'.

The Evolution of Smartphone Design in recent years

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:24 AM PDT

It's interesting to see how the design of smartphones can drastically change in just a few years.

Based on my observation, the two main smartphone that had the most impact on smartphone design in recent years (atleast on the front design) are the iPhone X, with the big notch, and the Galaxy S10/S10+ with the curved display and punch hole camera(s):

    https://imgur.com/a/dG2lAbO

We can clearly see that in 2017-2018, many manufacturers design their smartphone to resemble the iPhone X's design. While in 2019 to until recently, most manufacturers have change their design language to more resembles the Samsung Galaxy's design.

As a side note: the only reason I included the Pixel 4a even though it doesn't have a curved display (only the punch hole camera design) is entirely because I really wanted to add the the Pixel 3's notch in the 2017-2018 year time frame and we don't have any other Google product to directly compared it to the Galaxy S10/S10+

    RCS Troubleshooting

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:08 PM PDT

If for some reasons your RCS (Rich Communication Services) or Chat Features are not working on your phone, you might be able to fix that just by uninstalling and reinstalling (or updating) a system app called Carrier Services. Note, this steps are for Android Messages application. For other third party applications, steps could be different. You can do that very simply by going to the Play Store and searching for carrier services. When the app appears, select uninstall and then reinstall or update it. Now open the Android Messages app and you should see a prompt asking you to enable RCS or Chat Features. Your RCS feature should be up and running.

Google Play Games can be used as a Screen Recorder for Android!

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 11:55 PM PDT

    1. Open Play Games
    2. Choose a game (even built in ones)
    3. Click the record icon on top right
    4. Now the game will start and you'll have recording controls on your screen.
    5. Go to Home screen or wherever and start recording!

I found this better because most screen recorders in Android 10 were only recording the top half of my screen. This works amazing!

    No watermark or anything either!

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.
