Compilation of Issues Caused by OTA Updates and Ignored by Google

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 07:48 AM PDT

    Hello Android Community,

I wanted to summarize my research into what is truly a CUSTOMER SERVICE issue which has plagued countless Pixel users at different times over the last 1+ years. How can we get Google to acknowledge that they screwed up, and repair the devices they broke without us paying for it?? As of now, the burden of their mistakes is being passed to the end users.

The other day after the March 5,2020 update to Android 10, several of my apps crash, especially those with any tie to my camera. I DID NOT drop or mishandle my phone. My phone has been perfect (and my favorite ever, which I have touted to too many iPhone users over the years) until I woke up the other morning. These apps include:

-Google Camera (as well as any third party camera such as Open Camera, HD Camera, etc) -Any apps which try to use a camera function such as instagram (still works until I try to use the camera), Snapchat (no longer loads), WhatsApp (works until I try to use the camera), Signal (completely broken), Messenger (until I try to use the camera), Hangouts (until I try to use the camera). -Youtube (wont load) -Barclays (randomly crashes) -Ally apps (randomly crash) -Airbnb (randomly crashes) -Amazon (wont load then crashes)

I have gathered numerous links (mainly around the camera issues) which I have pasted below of hundreds upon hundreds of people having the same issues, with Pixels 1, 2, 3. I did not look for info on Pixel 4 but did happen to come across threads about similar issues with Pixel 4.

My summary of what I have seen: 1. Hundreds of people claim to suddenly have tons of issues with their phones directly after or within a week or so of an update being applied 2. Camera app no longer loads, or will load maybe 1-2% of the time then crash 3. Several apps with no link to camera (I.e. YouTube, amazon, banking apps) are suddenly broken. Many google apps crashing for many users. 4. These issues start for various users anywhere from a year+ ago all the way up through the latest OTA update, but issues always show up after an update 5. Google tech support as well as "platinum support members" always suggest factory reset. Factory reset, clearing apps cache and storage does nothing to help except for 1 single post that I've seen out of several hundred. Some users tried up to 5+ factory resets with no luck. 6. Google is replacing phones without question for users who are under warranty. For those who are out of warranty (like me), we are being sent to their preferred third-party repair specialist which a couple users indicated is a $110-180 camera replacement 7. One user notes that through 5+ phone calls, multiple escalations, it appears google knows this is an issue they caused, but is ignoring it. 8. Some users theorize that updates pushed to our phones actually damaged the camera hardware, and one user said he actually paid the third party vendor to replace the camera and it fixed his issue. 9. Countless people had these issues come up simultaneously, however google is telling people these are one-off hardware issues. 10. One user had this issue come up for 3 out of 4 pixels in his household at the same time.
    11. A simple look at the Play Store reviews for Google camera shows this issue popped up for tons of people recently around the same time. 12. Many users will never be buying a google phone again (likely myself included), when until now they were extremely pleased with their phones. 13. Camera still does not work in Safe Mode

Found an app to bring back notification ticker

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 01:28 AM PDT

    Hi there,

in the old days of Android there was the notification ticker in the status bar for new incoming notifications. With the introduction of heads up notifications the notification ticker was gone.

Yesterday I found a new app by the developer of Bottom Quicksettings. It is called "Super Status Bar" and one of its features is the return of the notification ticker in the status bar. Thought I share it here since I have a feeling that many of r/android users loved that Android feature.

Disclaimer: I'm not the developer and also have no relations to him.

Exynos S20 series is the worst flagship of 2020 for gaming, it's destroyed by last year's S10+. Don't buy this phone if you play games on your phone.

    What happened to "input zoom"(sic)?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 12:02 AM PDT

I woke up this morning remembering enhanced input/typing functionality that arrived with a new android release a few years back. It made common input functions easier to see, use, and manipulate. That's pretty much all I remember, other than it worked well and I haven't used it in quite a long time. It would very useful now that I've arrived on the shores of my dotage.

How many smartphones do you own right now and which ones? Which phone is your primary device and why?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 05:07 PM PDT

I jump from phone to phone, always caught up in having the latest and greatest. I take advantage of refund policies and rarely keep a phone for longer than 6 months.

I currently own an iPhone 11 Pro Max, a Samsung Galaxy S20, and an Xperia 5.

My SIM card is currently in my Xperia 5 as I just discovered how amazing Sony smartphones are. The hardware is very nice and it is paired with a near stock experience with some GOOD Sony additions. This year I've used the likes of Google, OnePlus, Apple, and Samsung but Sony has become my new favorite. I have not tried Moto since the RAZR days and brands such as Huawei, Oppo, etc., as I live in the United States and you don't see those around here...ever.

Just want to read what other fellow tech geeks are rollin with in their bags/pockets.
