    Weekly "anything goes" thread!

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:40 AM PST

Here's your chance to talk about whatever!

Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread.

Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed.

    A career in Android development

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 06:31 AM PST

    Hi all.

I've just moved to London and on the back of a degree in Software Development, I'm considering a career in Android development. However, I just got a call from a recruiter about a Salesforce Developer opportunity. Salesforce is a massive company that is still growing and it sounds like it's a good company to work for. What are your recommendations? Which field do you think is more attractive - Android development or Salesforce development?

P.S. I plan on moving back to Australia in the distant future.

    Thanks for any advice.

Changing minSdkVersion from 21 to 23?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:02 AM PST

What is your minSdkVersion? Right now in our apps it's mostly API 21, but we are considering to move to API 23, no specific reason except some code optimization and possibly APK size reduction.

According to analytics 13% of our users are on API level 21, but here is the catch, 69% of them are from India and Mexico and those countries tend to have very low eCPM and are not very profitable.
    What are your thoughts?

    Best high-level Camera API?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 05:46 AM PST

I was super excited about Camerakit, but it looks like development or support has stopped for that library.

Are there any comparable camera APIs like this that I can incorporate into my project relatively painlessly?

Tips to land first job as Jr

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:16 AM PST

What you guys recommend doing to land a first job as a Jr Android Dev without college and professional experience?

I live in Spain (if that matters), and I thought it would be easier, I know a lot of tools the industry uses and have more than 2 years of experience with Android.

My only plan is to 1) Get the Google certificate, as it would validate my knowledge without going to college. 2) Build some open source projects to have a portfolio to show. 3) Maybe lie about professional experience, as I have seen people saying that they only put that requirement to weed people out. But I really don't like lying..

Do you guys have any tips? Any thing I am missing out? How did you get your first job?

[Help] Query regarding Android Keystore system.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:43 PM PST

Hello everyone,I want to send a file, say "secret.txt", from my server to my client app. But I want this to be completely secured to the degree in which even on a rooted phone user can't see what's inside secret.txt. It will be a simple file in fs but encrypted. I don't know how Android keystore system works to achieve this.

I want my app to access this data pragmatically in such a way that the app won't know what the key is before the server sends the file.

I've figured out some approaches but all of them are flawed:

    1. Storing decryption key in code in the apk. (Can be easily extracted?)
    2. Sending random key from client to server, so I can send the data encrypted with that key. (Random key can be seen using apps such as Fiddler/Wireshark/Canary.)

Can anybody please help me solving this problem?

How interchangeable is Java/Kotlin? Our lead is against using Kotlin and most of our codebases are Java.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 05:37 AM PST

Like the title says I'm looking to get some details on anyone's experience in using Kotlin within Java codebases. I know there is the ability to use the converter but I'm not sure how well that integrates into existing projects. Our lead has said in the past that Kotlin is just syntactic sugar, so he sees no point in moving from Java. At this point most blog post and tutorials I'm running into are Kotlin and I'm eager to start learning the language.

Every android developer is willing to get more downloads and they deserve it

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 06:13 AM PST

As an Android app developer I know, developing an app is easier than publishing it and getting downloads. Because we need to know a lot of things about the market like trending keywords, most suitable categories, competitive developers. If you find those things in your first try you will touch the fortune. But unfortunately, it is the hardest work for us, app developers.

We use many methods to find those best keywords categories with spending money and time.

As a mobile app developer, I used several scripts to do market research and find subreddits. Now I combined that scripts with AI technologies and build xkeyseo.com which can use to

    Keyword research

    1. Competitor analysis
    2. Market spread analysis
    3. Keyword suggestion generations
    4. Find relevant subreddits

I know all of these things can be done by yourself but I'm pretty sure it will take hours. If you use https://xkeyseo.com/aso tools you can have that report within 2 minutes.

Does app-ads.txt get crawled on apps that are not publicly listed on play store?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 06:02 PM PST

    Hi All,

Having some issues with the app-ads.txt crawler and my app. It is hard to know exactly what the issue is as I'm using third party to provide the monetization for my app and only they can see crawler results. But apparently it keeps failing to find the file.

I suspect that it could be one of two issues but I need to confirm that the below is fine before moving onto the next possible solution:

My app is not hosted publicly on the play store (it is not meant for public usage)

Does anyone know if the crawler can access apps that are privately listed on play store? ie https://play.google.com/work

    thank you

Major changes in our app and fears of losing users

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:27 AM PST

We have an app that has more than 200k users (mostly kids) and the app has been working for 2+ years.

but we had to do major improvements in the UI and UX so we are having two options:

    - updating the current app to the new version but we fear that the users will reject the new UI/UX and stop using the app.

    - the second approach is creating a new separate app and promote for it in the old app, so over time most of our users will transition to the new app.

which one is better from your opinion? is there a third approach?
