I think Google is rolling out RCS to dual SIM phones!

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 07:33 PM PST

Hi guys. I'm a messages (beta) user. Today I got

"chat features->status: connected" on my dual SIM phone! Also got a verification code from Google. I think Google is finally rolling out RCS support to dual SIM card phones!? (Unfortunately I couldn't post images in this subreddit)

New “Google Sans Text” font could be a future Roboto replacement

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 01:56 PM PST

In the Google Design's Best of 2019 page, Google used a new font called Google Sans Text (which is seemingly in beta).

This font could be a future replacement for text in the Google Material Theme since Roboto is getting old and that the classic Google Sans is better suited for headers or titles.

You can see what it looks like in the Google Design's Best of 2019 page.

Galaxy S8 active very underrated phone of 2017

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 11:26 AM PST

The s8 active has been a tank of a phone for me I really like it especially when I added a tempered glass screen protector and a military grade proof case 😁! I wish Samsung updated it to andriod 10 one UI 2 or at least made a s9 active or S10 active

Tip: Hamburger menu swipe in Android 10.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 03:38 AM PST

So I just got the android 10 update on my phone and well, it's okay I guess. There's nothing quite game changing... But the thing that I liked and disliked the most is the gesture navigation.

It's just the swipe from the edge for back that fucks with my hamburger menus annoys me a lot.

I looked for it online and people have suggested diagonal swipes and L/J swipes. And they work at times, just not all the time.

So I tried different ways and found one way that works 100% of the time for me.

Just hold any part of the screen with one thumb and swipe from the edge with the other thumb.

    No more accidental back swipes.Cheers!

Reasons for upgrading from an older (~2yr old) high-end flagship?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 01:12 AM PST

This post is being written following a break in a tradition which has left me feeling rather inquisitive about the reasons why some of us upgrade our phones so often.

I currently own the Note 8. Since the iPhone 4 (my first and only Apple device), I've owned predominantly Samsung's Note devices, from the Note II, all the way to the current Note 8. I did own a Nexus 6P in the middle to try out Google for a while though. Unlike previous years though, where I have upgraded my device as soon as the 2 year contract was up, this time around I've held on, and have no intention in doing so until a worthy successor is revealed.

Here's the thing though; The phones may change, but the apps we use on a day-to-day basis are still exactly the same. I got to use a friend's Note 10+ for about an hour when my Note 8's battery died. I spent a while on WhatsApp, was on Reddit for around 30 mins, and the rest on YouTube.
At no point did I think "this experience is amazing, I need to upgrade". Sure it was faster and smoother. Yes there's a bit more screen real estate, but that's... it? I did not enjoy the lack of a headphone jack for YouTube, and the experience overall once I was within the same apps was exactly the same.

So what compels you to go out and buy a new phone? I had my Note 8's battery repaired under warranty about a month ago so that issue is no longer a problem. Apps look the same, the OS isn't that much more different when compared to the previous one.

The new feature I'm excited for are the higher refresh-rate screens, particularly the S20 that's out in a few months - the Pixel 4 would have been the one I upgraded to if it hadn't been such a mess!

Motorola's market segmentation is a mess.

Let's take a quick look at their upper-midrange:

    • Z4
    • One Hyper
    • One Action
    • One Zoom
Model CPU Band 71 support Notification LED Camera features Screen Battery Price Android Headphone Jack Advantage
Z4 SD 675 Yes No 48MP 6.4" OLED 3600 mAH $500 9 Yes Moto mods, all around good
Hyper SD 675 No Yes 64MP,16MP Ultrawide 6.5" TFT 4000 mAH $400 10 Yes Better camera? Notification LED?
Action Exynos 9609 No No Ultra wide?, 12MP Main, 5MP "action" (great photography) 6.3" IPS 3500 mAH $350 9 Yes Better action shots and photo editing?
Zoom SD 675 No No 48MP main, zoom, ultrawide, 25MP front 6.4" OLED 4000 mAH $450 9 Yes Zoom camera

So I get it, each phone can have a strength. But why can't they get a few more things in common? For example? Why don't they all have Band 71 support? Why is a notification LED on one but not the others? Either do it for all or dump it - it isn't "the" distinctive feature of the phone. BTW Notification LEDs for life.

The Hyper and Action seem very similar in their target users/camera features. What is the main differentiator?

Zoom has zoom, and z4 is newer (but doesn't have Android 10...) It is just confusing as Hell to me what the product managers are thinking.

Crop document option appeared in Google Photos today

I don't know if this came through a server-side update or from an app update. It's a very hidden option.

    Flagship phones numbered by year

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 05:36 AM PST

Though not confirmed, Samsung is rumoured to make the right move with naming their 2020 flagship "Galaxy S20". This should be followed by all the OEMs (who do not make incremental update devices) to make marketing effective for a larger percentage of consumer base confused with various naming schemes.
